Jamaica is West Africa in the Americas By Farooq A. Kperogi, Twitter: @farooqkperogi

My wife and I vacationed in Jamaica for a week a few weeks ago both to decompress from our busy lives here in the United States and to explore and soak in the gorgeous, pristine beaches and rich, riveting history of Jamaica, the island nation of fewer than 3 million people, which nonetheless has an outsized global cultural influence that belies its modest size and population. When we landed in Kingston, the Jamaican capital, it felt like I was in Nigeria, which I haven’t visited since June 2016. This brisk, bustling city’s sights, sounds, and smells struck me as distinctly West African, even Nigerian. Everywhere I turned, I saw people who reminded me of the family members, friends, and acquaintances I left in Nigeria.

I shouldn’t be surprised because it’s common knowledge that a little over 90 percent of Jamaicans trace ancestral provenance to West Africa. The ancestors of most modern Jamaicans were enslaved to the Americas mostly from the Akan and Ashanti people in Ghana and from the Yoruba, Igbo, and Ibibio people of Nigeria. But it’s still astonishing how remarkably West African these people still are after hundreds of years of separation from their origins.

Kingston looks and feels like the stereotypical African city. The hustle and bustle of the city, the open markets, the street food, the ever-present, often needless, honks from the horns of motorists, the haggling over prices of most things, the uneasy co-mixing of spotless prosperity and grubby poverty, etc. remind you of a typical city in West Africa even though Jamaica is just a two-hour flight from Atlanta in the United States. We went there as tourists, but we were indistinguishable from the locals—until we spoke, that is. I had never felt more at home in a foreign country than I did in Jamaica. It wasn’t only redolent of home, that is, Nigeria, it felt truly like home. Even the flora and fauna of the country evoked memories of my growing up in Nigeria because Jamaica is in the tropics. I saw weeds, grass, flowers, and fruits that I grew up with in my hometown whose names I don’t know in English and that I have never seen in the United States. In some parts of the country, we encountered savannah vegetation. In other parts, we saw rainforest vegetation—like you would in many West African countries. This redounded to the sensation of familiarity we felt throughout our stay there.

Afrocentrism is mainstream here. So are Rastafarianism and belief in African spirituality even for people who profess Christianity. For instance, Obiism, which we call juju or jazz in Nigeria, is rife not just in Jamaica but in the entire Caribbean islands. Juju men or medicine men are called “Obeah men.” Scholars have traced the etymology of Obeah to dibia, the Igbo term for medicine man. Skin bleaching is negligible. Race pride is sky-high. People here embrace their Africanness with fierce pride. When people discovered we were Nigerians their attitudes changed toward us: they became exceptionally friendly and protective without expectation of reward. For example, when we visited the Trench Town Culture Yard Museum, a Kingston neighbourhood where Bob Marley grew up and which has the distinction of being the birthplace of reggae music, the head of the place called my wife and I “queen and king” because we said we were from Nigeria.

She was sitting comfortably in her easy chair when we were ushered into her office. She probably first assumed that we were Black Americans. The moment we said we were from Nigeria, she instinctively got off her seat in a show of reverence that both discomfited and surprised me. She said we were their brother and sister from the motherland, “our queen and our king.” It later occurred to me that it wasn’t us as Maureen and Farooq that she was in awe of; it was what we represented to her. We symbolized her West African ancestors. She wasn’t alone. Everyone in Trench Town, from the tour guide to random people in the streets who recognized us as Nigerians, treated us with noteworthy kindness and fraternal love. One man whom our tour guide told we were from Nigeria gave us his umbrella for free because it was drizzling as we walked toward a part of the town Bob Marley memorably described as a “concrete jungle” in one of his songs. When I asked how he would get his umbrella back, he said we could take it with us. He was overcome with emotions that we were Nigerians who came to visit Jamaica and connect with our long-lost cousins. It almost made me shed a tear. We gave the umbrella back to the tour guide to return it to him.

It was an inexplicably surreal sensation when we walked the streets that Bob Marley walked as a child and sat on the bed he slept in for years after he left his mother in Delaware in the United States and returned to Jamaica. The room, which is just a few meters away from his guardian’s room in a multi-family, tree-studded compound that is reminiscent of a traditional West African home, inspired the famous “Three Little Birds” song. The dingy little room is located in a part of the compound that causes, even forces, you to rise up in the morning “with the risin’ sun.” And the verdant, arboreal abundance of the compound invited, still invites, birds to perch on trees and descend on the ground to sing sweet songs. That was the sentiment Marley captured when he sang, “Three little birds/Pitch by my doorstep/Singin’ sweet songs/Of melodies pure and true.” Our visit to the home Bob Marley built and lived in on 56 Hope Road in Kingston until his death (which has been converted to the Bob Marley Museum) was no less thrilling. In his bedroom, Marley created a special space for gifts he got from different parts of Africa, which are still carefully preserved.

A major highlight of the tour of the Bob Marley Museum was an interaction with the warm, avuncular, and pleasant Bongo Herman, Bob Marley’s percussionist and contemporary. Herman, who is 79 and was born Herman Davis, spotted me in the crowd of tourists and motioned me to come. He asked if I was African. I answered in the affirmative and added that I was Nigerian. He said he suspected I was Nigerian but didn’t want to be wrong by being too specific. It turned out that he had visited Nigeria—and several African countries—many times and collaborated with scores of African, including Nigerian, musicians. I would also mistake him for a Nigerian if I met him anywhere. He looks every bit like an Igbo man from Umuahia! We also spent some time in Montego Bay, Jamaica’s commercial nerve centre. It’s saner, gentler, wealthier, and more beautiful than Kingston. Its serenity and marble splendour remind me of Abuja.

But in spite of its many similarities with Nigeria, Jamaica bests Nigeria in the human development index. It’s a higher-middle-income country. Nigeria is a lower-middle-income country. The Jamaican dollar is way more robust than the Naira. And Jamaica’s infrastructure is more virile than Nigeria’s. Electricity is constant in the cities we visited. Only natural disasters cause power outages, locals told us. Unlike Nigeria, Jamaica has no natural resources. Tourism is its major source of revenue. Nonetheless, Nigeria’s influence is growing in this island nation. Afrobeats are everywhere and are threatening to upend reggae. Early this year, Jamaican Opposition Leader Mark Golding lamented that “Afrobeats is eating our food,” which is a reference to the progressively diminishing influence of Jamaican music as a direct consequence of the rise of Afrobeats.

In spite of this, everyday folks in Jamaica love Nigeria. For some reason, former President Goodluck Jonathan is hugely popular here. Most Jamaicans who discovered we were Nigerians never failed to ask after Goodluck Jonathan. It was in Montego Bay that a taxi driver told us that Jamaicans love Jonathan because when he visited the country, he offered to sell petrol to the country at cheaper prices than they get from Venezuela but their leaders spurned the offer. They also said he kept his promise to enable direct flights from Nigeria to Jamaica. I haven’t confirmed the accuracy of these claims, but Jonathan is by far the most popular Nigerian leader in Jamaica now. You can’t write about Jamaica without talking about Jamaican Patois, which shares historical and linguistic affinities with West African Pidgin English. I thought because I could make sense of written Jamaican Patois based on my knowledge of Nigerian Pidgin English, I wouldn’t have trouble understanding spoken Jamaican Patois. Wrong.

“Good night” means “good evening.” If you understand “good night” to be the conversational expression of goodbye, there will be a communication breakdown, like there was between my wife and our hotel receptionist. And if you don’t understand anything, just say, “Yeah, man!” It’s an all-purpose interjection for almost everything—or so it seems.

In Bob Marley's Room where he lived before his death
In Bob Marley’s Room where he lived before his death

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT, H. E. AHMED BOLA TINUBU FROM THE INDIGENOUS NATIVE HAUSA PEOPLE OF HAUSALAND.

1
THE INDIGENOUS NATIVE HAUSA PEOPLE OF HAUSALAND
THE INDIGENOUS NATIVE HAUSA PEOPLE OF HAUSALAND

Mr President Sir,

We reaffirm to you our unwavering love and support for you and the success of your presidency. We hereby reiterate our earlier counsel to you to be very wary of the Fulani Elites, Clerics and Monarchs.  For they never meant well for the Hausa people particularly and Nigerians in general.  They remain unrelenting as ever to take over this country by any means possible. They remain ever treacherous, greedy, wicked and insatiable.  Don’t ever attempt to appease them in any shape or form because it will be counter-productive: a waste of time and self-induced vulnerability to your good self and the good government that you are administering. Up to this moment, the Hausaland and People have remained under siege by the Fulani terrorist/militia with the collaboration of their Elites, Clerics and Monarchs.

Consequently, we, therefore, want to draw your attention to the following:

1. A former governor of Zamfara state in the person of Ahmed Sani Yerima Bakura was recently out advocating and campaigning for Negotiations and Amnesty from your government, for the benefit of the very same terrorists/militia that he and his fellow gang of Fulani elites and monarchs have been sponsoring. Please note that we strongly and unequivocally condemn this initiative because of the following reasons:

i. Their actions are treasonable offences because their aim is to forcefully displace Nigerians of their land through killing, murder, rape, and kidnap for ransom; with the aim of establishing a Fulani nation against the Nigerian State, and enthroning a government in the model of Iran and Afghanistan. This takeover aim has severally been affirmed by their Principal sponsor former President Muhammadu Buhari, his Fulani born Ministers like Gen. Dan Ali, and Former Fulani governors like Mallam Nasir Elrufai of Kaduna and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi. Fulani nationality organizations like Miyetti Allah and the Fulani Nationality Movement (aka FUNAM) also have severally declared that they want to convert Nigeria to a Fulani nation. One of their barefaced Supporter and Clerics Shieck Ahmed Gumi has been at the forefront of the campaign to justify their actions. There are volumes of videos and recorded statements of them in the public media that give credence to this assertion. There is none therefore and can never be any justification to ever contemplate negotiations or amnesty for these enemies of humanity and the Nigerian State.

2. His attempts to compare the actions of the Fulani establishments’ sponsored brigandage, as being similar to the past youths’ agitations of the Niger Delta is simply adding insult to the injuries.  Contrary to the Fulanis: the Niger Deltans were reacting to destruction by population from oil companies operating in their region with little or no compensation for them;  considering the environmental and social harm they were suffering as the consequences. But on the part of the Fulani,  they are Immigrants who were accommodated, indigenised and pampered by governments of the Nigerian States and Country, from 1804 to date. They became so comfortable, greedy and insatiable that they decided to pick up arms against the various states of their accommodation and the entire people of Nigeria. They only deserve to Surrender and Face the Laws of Nigeria or be  Killed, Arrested and Prosecuted.

Mr President Sir, considering items 1 and 2 above,  we at this moment very strongly advise you not to yield to the antics of these Fulani Sponsors of Treason through their Ethnic Terrorism as being championed by Ahmed Sani Yerima Bakura the former governor of Zamfara State and his Cohorts acting in the open or behind doors. We strongly recommend and unequivocally support the deployment of full FIREPOWER by the government against the terrorists/militia that may lead to their arrests or liquidation and prosecution. God bless your presidency and the federal government of Nigeria.

Corruption in Nigeria’s DSS: How Bichi Sold DSS Property to Wife and How Mrs Bichi Is Feared More Than Her Husband By Jackson Ude

0
The Director General of the Directorate of State Security Services of Nigeria, Mr. Yusuf Bichi and his Wife, Mrs Aisha Bichi
The Director General of the Directorate of State Security Services of Nigeria, Mr. Yusuf Bichi and his Wife, Mrs Aisha Bichi

The DG DSS, Yusuf Bichi, swims in corruption at the headquarters of the secret police. From contract scams to nepotism. Only recently, Bichi sold a DSS property at Niafounke Street, House 20, off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, to his wife at a ridiculous giveaway price. DSS operatives are currently unhappy with how Bichi has ruined the DSS. In another abuse of power, the DG Mr. Yusuf Bichi auctioned one of the Directors Quarters at Niafounke Street, House No. 20, Off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja to his wife Mrs. Aisha Bichi through proxies and in the process ejecting a serving director who was occupant of the house at the time. The house was outrageously undervalued and sold at an unbelievable gift-away price. It is believed that it is the house that Mrs Aisha Bichi intend to reside in when her husband eventually exits as the DG.

Mrs Aisha has boosted at several fora that President Tinubu has no option but to retain her husband for at least 3 more years to stabilize his government otherwise, Tinubu will not survive more than one year in office. It was gathered that she vowed to make Kano State Ungovernable for Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf will sponsor a series of protests and other unorthodox methods to destabilise his government, it was this singular mission that made her to singlehandedly select the Kano State Director and other strategic officers to support her clandestine mission. Unknown to Mrs Aisha Bichi and her husband that those close to Tinubu are fully briefed on the secret pact that exists between former VP Atiku Abubakar and the DG including the recent twist at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. It has been exposed how Mr Yusuf Bichi played both sides and strike a deal from the 2 front runners in the build-up to the 2023 general election. It is no secret that Mr Bichi has silenced media houses from reporting the shenanigans at the Department of State Service through intimidation, coercions and threat to life, to the extent that media gagging has now become the official policy of the agency. For any media that dares to report happenings at the DSS, masked men will be sent in a draconian-like manner akin to military dictatorship to raid and harass staff of such media houses.

It remains to be seen whether Mr Tinubu will launch an investigation into these weighty allegations to expose the level of rots in the 2 agencies (NIA & DSS) or will continue to retain Mr Bichi and Amb. Rufai despite the obvious threat to national stability from their clandestine activities and those of their family members. In the suit, Hadiza informed the court that the respondents on May 5, 2019, forcefully gained entrance into her premises at No. 36 Gnassingbe Eyadema Street, Asokoro, Abuja tortured, maltreated and threatened her life and those of other members of her family. She further asserts that the respondents through their officers are continually menacingly moving around her premises, adding that she and her family are constantly living in fear as they keep seeing strange movements of Hilux vans belonging to the respondents with masked men driving around the premises. Ms Usman further told the court how several gunshots were fired into her compound by the masked men that accompany the respondent (Aisha Bichi) and was subsequently admitted at Asokoro General Hospital as a result of the trauma and injuries she sustained from the beating, the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to her on the instruction Mrs Aisha Bichi.

In the same authoritarian manner, sometime in January 2023, Aisha Bichi order the illegal arrest and detention of the then Kano State NNPP gubernatorial candidate (now Kano State Executive Governor), Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf (Abba Gida Gida) over a minor altercation between his supporters and her security details. The security details and motorcade that Mrs Bichi move about with is longer than the convoy or details of any Governor in Nigeria, and almost twice the size of her husband’s details and motorcade. In the course of the altercation one of Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s entourage, Garba Kilo was brutally dehumanised leading to serious injury on the head and brain trauma as she was heard saying kill him, and nothing will happen. Equally, she promises to deal decisively with Engr. Abba Kabir vows at the time that she and her husband will never allow him to govern Kano. She rains a stream of invectives on Abba Kabir and then ordered the beating up of Abba’s members of the entourage and the destruction of his motorcade. She vowed at the time never to allow Abba to board the same flight with her to Abuja and she made good her threat by calling for heavy reinforcement of DSS personnel who condoned the lounge and told Abba he was under arrest on the orders of Mrs Bichi thus preventing Abba from boarding the plane.

It is no secret that Mrs Bichi is meddling with Service Affairs and deploys DSS Operatives to deal with her perceived enemies at the slightest provocation. Some time ago she ordered for the removal of the DSS Director in charge of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja over what she termed insubordination for allegedly refusing to welcome her back into the country in 2018. It is believed that Mrs Bichi and the Chief Security Office (CSO) to the DG Mr Adamu who in the past engaged in power tussles over contracts issues on who controls what. Mrs Bichi and Mr Adamu are now the sole contractors through proxies at the DSS Headquarters but Mrs Bichi has the upper hand. Some of the remittances are done through their children and associated Pandora-like business entities. The Technical Director at the DSS is being relegated and his duties are taken over by Mrs. Aisha Bichi and Mr. Adamu.

Under Bichi nepotism and favouritism is the order of the day largely due to the full grief of his wife as the unofficial Co-DG of the Service. Bichi has retained very old and senior retired directors and pushed them to manned strategic commands and formations, resulting in grumblings among upcoming officers, whose progress has been retarded by Bichi’s action of retaining and in some cases recalling retired personnel to carry out his bidding. Quite recently, more than 300 DSS Operatives were recruited from Bichi Local Government alone to the detriment of the other components that make up Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Bichi’s Wife, The De-Facto Head of Nigeria’s Secret Service Is Feared More Than Her Husband…

Nigerians are taken aback by the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to retain the Director Generals of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Department of State Services (DSS) despite the controversy surrounding the appointment of the duo. For the Director General of NIA, Amb. Mr Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, it was alleged that he failed exams thrice and that by his levels in the Service not qualified to be appointed DG at the time of his appointment and having attended the age of 70 and have served a term as DG it is expected that President Tinubu will inject a much younger person to steer the affairs of the Nigeria’s foremost intelligence agency.

In the case of Amb. Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Director General of the State Security Services (DSS) who was appointed from retirement and who has done so little in the fight against banditry which threatened internal security and stability, and having served a fully termed and now in the second term and approaching 70 he should also give way for younger ranking officers to turn around the internal security of this country. It was said the DG DSS is involved in intensive lobbying to be retained by deploying influential emirs and Islamic clerics from the north to put pressure on President Tinubu and those around him claiming that without him Tinubu wouldn’t have become President. More disturbing in the Department of State Service (DSS), is seemingly endless strings of administrative scandals, contract scams and subversion of principles and rules governing the operation of the Department of State Service which are becoming serious threats to national security and stability due to unwholesome and overbearing activities of the wife of the Director General of the State Security Service Hajiya Aisha Yusuf Magaji Bichi. Mrs Bichi is without doubt the de-facto head of Nigeria’s Secret Service and is more feared than her husband.

Mrs Aisha Bichi rose into prominence and national limelight when a tailor who goes by the name Ms Hadiza Usman sues her, alongside her husband and the Director of FCT Command of the DSS over an alleged threat to life. Hadiza Usman dragged the trio before Justice Sylvanus Orji for the enforcement of Fundamental Human Rights pursuant to Order 4 Rule 7, Order 5 Rule 7 and Order 11 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedures) Rules, 2009 and Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. She prayed the court to make an interim order restraining the respondents by themselves, agents, employees, operatives, and detectives from further threatening her life or putting her life in jeopardy either by their actions or inaction pending the determination of the application.

Growing up as Femi Adesina’s daughter By Tosin Adesina

What haven’t they said about my face being a true reflection of my father’s familiar face? Spitting image. Carbon copy. Chip off the old block. I have heard it all. When I was young, and we used to go out together a lot, people will see us and say: “Ah, ah. Did you think your father was running away? Why do you look like him so much?” Let’s get started. I was born and bred in Lagos over two and a half decades ago. Originally from Ipetumodu, in Osun State, I’ve lived all my life in Lagos, save for a few stays abroad: France, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, South Africa, Ghana, and many other places. I grew up knowing my father, Femi Adesina, as a journalist. The house was a forest of books and newspapers. Books, books. Newspapers. Newspapers. And I started reading them. Scratch that, Dad forced me to read because I preferred watching TV (LOL). Little Red Riding Hood changed it for me—now this is a family secret.

In the early days, Dad was reporting for the Weekend Concord. I didn’t like the fact that he was away from home most times. We would plan family holidays and at the last moment, Dad wouldn’t be able to go. One thing or the other had come up at work. I and my brother, Tobi, my senior by two years, loved going to Ipetumodu, to spend time with our grandparents, but more often than not, we went with Mummy, as Dad would be busy at work. That’s the life of a journalist, which I was to experience briefly. Mum is a nurse. A passionate and dedicated one. She’s the matron of a private hospital in Lagos. She has always been there for us. Firm, godly and dedicated. I remember me and Tobi used to nickname her “Mrs Oboye” behind her back. How did it happen? We attended Caleb International College in the Magodo area of Lagos, and one Mrs. Funmi Oboye was the head teacher. Tough and strict. Every morning, at the Assembly, she subjected us to lessons from the word of God. As young people, we felt her homilies were too long, and we often grumbled. When we came on holiday, and Mummy was also taking all the time at morning devotion, we would look at each other and whisper: “Mrs Oboye.”

Tobi is a pilot and has been for the past nine years. He is a specialist in the Boeing 737, having trained in South Africa and Sweden. He also has the Airline Transport Pilot Licence from Boeing Centre, Miami, Florida. Dad was Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Newspapers when he was invited to serve as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former President Muhammadu Buhari. We are a private family. Though a journalist, my dad was not loud and honestly really didn’t change from who I knew him to be. He lived a quiet, modest life, and brought us up that way. Never mind how people portray him in the media and social media. Suddenly, working with the President brought him out there, in the glare of the nation. And there followed the good, the bad and the ugly. There were times people would meet me and say: “Adesina? Ah, you resemble Buhari’s media man.” At times, I own up, some other times, I duck. It’s better to leave them wondering. I was silent about our relationship for the better part of the administration because I really wasn’t interested in the hassle that came with it. The good times opened us up to opportunities we might not have had without the position. Thank God for it all. The bad and ugly were people saying all sorts of rubbish about my dad and not being able to trust anyone. In the beginning, it worried me. But later, the Holy Spirit helped me overcome it all.

Dad really loves Buhari. No doubt about that. He would defend him anywhere, any time and on any issue. At home when gisting with the family, you could feel his loyalty and love for his boss. He speaks well of him everywhere. In and out of office, Dad is a Buharist to the core. I studied French at the University of Ibadan. Lived in France at different times, and did my NYSC as a reporter and presenter with Channels Television. I was given a job after, which I held for about a year. Now, I have a media and publishing company called LOTW Group (Living Out The Word) which holds LOTW Network, LOTW Kids, LOTW Studios, LOTW Publishing, Shop LOTW and LOTW Travel. The focus is really to put God at the centre stage of our lives because He tells me He doesn’t like it when people seem to remember Him only on Sundays. So He wants to be a part of our lives even on Mondays to Saturdays and I’m the one He is giving the responsibility to. He said: “Tosin, I want you to put me in the centre of people’s lives.” Well, His wish is my command. I also run a French language agency and resource centre called Ma Petite France. M.P.F. teaches French to kids and adults and provides French learning resources to schools.

Once upon a time, I wanted to be a journalist like Dad and I did in fact venture into it for a while. I won’t say I’m completely out because I’m still in media and publishing. My life’s goal and focus is to influence people to know God and do life with Him. Every other thing I do is a means to that end. I have been blessed by God tremendously. He allowed me to be born into the home of Femi and Nike Adesina where I was taught about Him, shielded, cared and provided for. Dad is a responsible father, he is present. I can call him at any time and share any idea or plan I have with him. I can talk to him about work, men, life, God, anything. I have been blessed with a father not a lot of people get to have on this earth and I am proud of him regardless of people’s opinion about him—good or bad. Every young lady aspires to matrimony. So do I, and it’s coming soon. My mom and dad are probably the happiest about it. Mom can’t wait for me to leave her house so she can finally fill my wardrobe with all of her extra clothes. (LOL)

We laugh a lot. Just as my dad is famous for his tendency to laugh often. While we were all in Ipetumodu for the holidays, a friend of my dad’s sister came for the weekend. When she was leaving, she remarked: “It’s been an experience being with the Adesinas this weekend. They laugh as if they have no care in the world.” That in a nutshell is my story.

DO YOU KNOW HOW THE APOSTLES DIED?

0
A graphic Image of Jesus and His Apostles.
A graphic Image of Jesus and His Apostles.

Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles and disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: But he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

1. Matthew: Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, Killed by a sword wound.

2. Mark: Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by Horses through the streets until he was dead.

3. Luke: Was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous Preaching to the lost.

4. John: Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in a huge Basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution In Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered From death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison Island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The Apostle John was later freed and returned to serve As Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only Apostle to die peacefully

5. Peter: He was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross. According to church tradition, it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die In the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

6. James: The leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller’s club. This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

7. James the Son of Zebedee; was a fisherman by trade when Jesus Called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer Walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and Knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

8. Bartholomew: Also known as Nathaniel Was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed for our Lord in present-day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

9. Andrew: Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: ‘I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.’ He continued to preach to his tormentors For two days until he expired.

10. Thomas: Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the Sub-continent.

11. Jude: Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

12. Matthias: The Apostle chosen to replace the traitor, Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

13. Paul: Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational Doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.

THE CASE OF MMESOMA EJIKE HAS UNFORTUNATELY ENDED WITHOUT CLOSURE: ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR JUSTICE WAS LOST By Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye.

Miss Mmesoma Joy Ejikeme who has admitted forging her JAMB Results and now banned for 3 years
Miss Mmesoma Joy Ejikeme who has admitted forging her JAMB Results and now banned for 3 years

Mmesoma Ejike, the teenager who took the general admission test conducted by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) manipulated her scores and was naïve enough to flaunt it. That got the attention of people who believed her extraordinary but manipulated scores. Regardless of her original intentions, whatever they were, the flaunted scores got the attention of important people both in government and in the private sector. Awards flowed from those who believed they were dealing with a student of exceptional academic records with potential for greatness. Though not much was known about this girl prior to her earning explosive media attention, every indication shows she is from a poor background. The demeanour and appearance of her father, who vigorously defended her before finally apologizing for it, gave an idea of the family environment where she was raised. Apparently, none of her parents ever took JAMB tests. Mmesoma is thus probably the first person in her family to encounter JAMB.

When you throw a stone in the air, it will eventually come down, and it is impossible to tell in advance the spot it will land. That was what happened to Mmesoma. When she went on social media to flaunt her manipulated super scores, she thought it would end there. But no; there are consequences to everything, sometimes unpleasant, sometimes unexpected, and sometimes they lead you to prison. But the story of Mmesoma and JAMB is not a story of one girl and one testing board. It is a story about a country, its institutions, its people and how they interface. The story tested our country because it happened at a time when a man became a Governor with fake certificates. Thus, the story of Mmesoma showed what happens when a story involves the wrongdoing of a poor person and where a powerful institution seems to lose face.

Many powerful people were embarrassed by this story. The State Government, which eventually discovered the manipulation, could not do so until its officials had made public pronouncements that showed that for two weeks they believed the manipulated result to be genuine. It must be embarrassing for a government to be deceived by a teenager for two weeks. Also, a wealthy philanthropist awarded a scholarship to the teenager based on his belief also that the manipulated result was genuine. JAMB officials, given the past record of inability to demonstrate the integrity of their testing processes, were embarrassed that scores it did not give were being accepted by the general public. In the end, all these powerful people and institutions had mud on their faces and anger in their hearts. And they were bound to overreact. They were on one side against the teenager. It was precisely under that setting that Nigerian justice was put to the test and failed.

Unfortunately, justice and due process were pushed aside and emotions and might prevail. To someone shallow in thinking, everything now seems okay the girl has confessed, the father has apologized, JAMB has been “vindicated”, etc. But how did all this happen? The process of finding the truth is often more important than finding the truth. I will give two simple illustrations:

(1) If we torture a person suspected of stealing and due to the torture, he eventually confesses and actually brings out the stolen good, we can say that we finally found the truth, and that will be right. That is; torture produced the truth.

(2) A person is wrongly suspected of stealing and he is put to torture. After a long period of torture, he continues to deny the allegation. The torturer says: “He must be innocent because, despite the torture, he continues to deny”. And the innocent man is set free. Again, torture will appear to have led to the truth, which is the discovery that the suspect didn’t do it. Can we then agree that since torture has led to the discovery of the truth in the two cases, we would recommend torture as the process to discovery of truth? Whether Mmesoma was wrong or not, whether she did it alone or with collaborators, whatever her real intentions, the way JAMB and Anambra State Government went about this matter would have produced the same result – a confession and apology from the poor accused to the powerful accuser. This is exactly what due process was intended to prevent, lingering doubts in the mind of ordinary people. The hasty panel, the media lynching, the threats and the punishment of a three-year ban without a fair hearing and continued threats of criminal prosecution would have been enough to produce a similar ending as we have seen.

But such an ending will leave so many questions unanswered. That is why this case ended without closure. Any process that lacks transparency will leave doubts in the minds of many. How did JAMB arrive at the length of the ban it imposed on the girl? Why not two years or four years? Was JAMB guided by any standard measurement of how long to ban a candidate in such circumstances? Or was the length of punishment determined by the amount of anger in the heart of JAMB leadership? Administering justice with transparency and following due process is crucial for a fair and effective system. Here are some key reasons why we needed transparency in the handling of the Mmesoma story:

1. Safeguarding Individual Rights: Transparency and due process ensure that individuals’ rights are protected and respected. It guarantees that everyone is treated fairly and impartially under the law, regardless of their social status, wealth, or power. It is not just the rights of Mmesoma that we are concerned about. We were concerned about the rights of everyone who has annoyed JAMB or any other Government agency in Nigeria. Those rights must be safeguarded at all costs.

2. Enhancing Public Trust: When the administration of justice is transparent and follows due process, it fosters public trust and confidence in the legal system. People need to believe that their grievances will be heard and resolved fairly, without any hidden agendas or biases. What happened in Mmesoma’s case only reinforces the belief that you are in trouble only when you offend powerful people. Or, that while the rich can forge certificates and become Governors, it is a different ballgame when the same is done by the poor.

3. Preventing Abuse of Power: Transparency acts as a check on the abuse of power by authorities. When the process is open and visible, it becomes difficult for individuals in positions of authority to manipulate or misuse their power for personal gain or to target specific individuals or groups. The process used in this case could so easily be abused in cases where the accused may be innocent.

4. Ensuring Accountability: Transparent administration of justice facilitates accountability. When the process is visible to the public, officials involved are more likely to act in an accountable manner, knowing that their actions are subject to scrutiny. It is clear from this that there was no standard by which JAMB could have been restrained in what its officials could do. If they could summarily ban her, they could do more. They could order her arrest and detention without trial. Not knowing the limits of what JAMB could do was a problem.

5. Promoting Consistency and Quality: Following due process ensures that legal decisions are based on established rules and procedures. It promotes consistency in the application of the law and helps prevent arbitrary or discriminatory outcomes. Transparency also encourages judges and officials to maintain high standards of professionalism and competence. The Commissioner of Education in Anambra State was reported to have directed the DSS to arrest the teenager at their first meeting after JAMB denied the scores.

6. Facilitating Error Correction: Transparency and due process allow for errors to be identified and corrected. If mistakes occur during the legal process, they can be identified through transparency, and appropriate remedies, such as appeals or reconsideration, can be pursued. JAMB still don’t know how to prevent a reoccurrence of what happened in Myeloma’s case

7. Upholding the Rule of Law: The rule of law is a fundamental principle of a democratic society. Transparent administration of justice and adherence to due process are essential components of the rule of law. They ensure that decisions are based on established laws rather than personal whims or preferences. Clearly, much of the outcome we ended with in this case was driven by the whims and caprices of JAMB officials in collusion with Anambra State government officials embarrassed for being so easily misled by a teenager’s prank. Overall, transparency and due process are essential for maintaining a just and equitable system, protecting individual rights, fostering public trust, and upholding the principles of fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. The lack of transparency in the Mmesoma case, unfortunately, harmed society rather than otherwise.

IMO GUBER 2023 – AN OPEN LETTER TO NDI IMO. THE REIGN OF “GUYMEN” IN IMO STATE VOL. 3 – THE HOLOCAUST IN IMO STATE.

A Collage picture of three friends; Hope UZODINMA (APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu (PDP) and Athan Achonu (LP)

Ndi Imo Ndi nwe anyi, we hope you’re digesting with full assimilation, the letter series of expository political “guymanism” in Imo State as led by Hope UZODINMA? Remember, it took years to build the Imo State of our dream from the sweat, suffering and Intellectual sagacity of Dr M. I. Okpara, the premier of the Eastern Region. It took some years, in the character of Dee Sam Mbakwe to consolidate the giant strides of Dr. M. I. Okpara. It was the era when men lived for the services of the people, it was the time when meritocracy was the king of the political jungle. It was the era of competence and credibility when the likes of Hope UZODINMA(APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu(PDP) and Athan Achonu(LP) and the cliques of “Guymanism” were considered very disgusting in leadership services of Igbo land.

In a proper Igbo leadership setting, the likes of Hope UZODINMA(APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu(PDP) and Athan Achonu(LP) are not qualified to lead or be delegated to roast or butcher goat for village festival among Umunna, for its 100% possible that after roasting or butchering the goat, parts of the goat would be incomplete upon presentation of the goat meat to Umunna gathering. How dare you delegate Hope UZODINMA (APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu (PDP) and Athan Achonu (LP) to be in charge of the Imo State Treasury? It’s not unusual that dogs do eat bones hung on their necks to guard. Unfortunately, those who are not qualified to be entrusted with even ordinary roasting/or butchering of Umunna goats are seeking the support of Ndigbo/Ndi-Imo to be in charge of the State fund. It seems, therefore, that Imo State fits into the proverbial statement that in the land of the blind, one-eyed man is the king.

Ndi Imo ought to know that Hope UZODINMA(APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu(PDP) and Athan Achonu(LP) are the worst of political demagogues we can hand over and/or entrust with the treasury of Imo State. Ndi Imo should present their political 1st -11th for the November 11th, 2023 governorship election. It’s obvious that if Imo State is likened to a football club, Hope UZODINMA (APC), SamDaddy Anyanwu (PDP) and Athan Achonu (LP) are not qualified even to be in the lineup of being among the 3rd -11th players as a result of incompetence, lack of integrity, capacity, skills, merit, etc, for the usage of such breed of political “footballers” for a serious tournament is like accepting defeat before the tournament.Let us remind Ndi-Imo that the era of Dr. M. I. Okpara, Akanu Ibiam, Dee Sam Mbakwe was the era when “Ezi aha kariri ego.” Ndigbo venerated good name (i.e., integrity) more than wealth. Dr. M. I. Okpara, Akanu Ibiam, and Dee Sam Mbakwe were of the era when men were living in the glory of their people in selfless services not living in their own glory of personal aggrandisement.

It was the era when education, steeped in “ako n’ Uche,” was a priority as a key as well as a hallmark of quality leadership. This accounted for the reason why the classroom teacher, Dee Sam Mbakwe, became the Governor of old Imo State, covering and/or including the present Abia State and Ebonyi State. It was the era when primordial and/or primitive accumulation of wealth has not eaten deep into the lives of our leaders, instead, were eaten up by the burning passion and/or desire for selfless services to their people. It was the time when “Guymen” like Hope Uzodinma(APC), Athan Achonu(LP) and Samdaddy Anyanwu(LP) wouldn’t come near the corridor of power as the aroma of political leadership then lies in integrity and character. It was the era when leadership benchmark and/or yardstick was neither measured by heights, seizes, one’s mansion nor by heaviness of the one’s deep pocket. It was the era when the ruled and/or the joyfully rich men in the community would contribute money and/or resources together to build mansions for noble leaders after becoming Governors. This was the fate of Dee Sam Mbakwe and Akanu Ibiam. Their mansions are the legendary legacies they left behind in the hearts of Ndigbo.

It was the era when someone like Akanu Ibiam returned the title of British Knighthood because of the death of his people being killed unjustly during the 1967/70 Biafra Genocide against the Ndigbo by the Nigeria Government aided by the British government, Akanu Ibiam protested and demonstrated his loyalty and empathy to Ndigbo by returning the title to Queen Elizabeth II (British government). Unfortunately, in this present era, many things have, ugly changed. We have an emperor Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who sit in Douglas House and watch balkanised Imolites swim in pools of blood and anguish.

Within the little reign of Emperor Hope UZODINMA(APC), the Intersociety group recorded that, in the despotic, tyrannical government of Hope UZODINMA, “No fewer than 1,600 unarmed citizens of Imo State have been killed while 300 others have disappeared without trace between January, 2021and May 2023 (29 months). Moreso, relatedly, about 700 persons sustained huge decrees of life-threatening injuries with over 900 others abducted within the same period under review. The above ugly situations were contained in a 33-page special research and investigative report presented to the newsmen on Sunday by a civil rights group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) in Enugu State.

The Board chairman of the group, Emeka Umeagbalasi, who presented the report, disclosed that the “State and non-State actors were responsible for the said killings” According to him, State actors accounted for the deaths of 900 out of the 1,600 unarmed persons killed in the State while the other 700 were killed by armed non-State actors within the period under review. The report noted that 600 out of the 900 were secretly killed by State actors while 300 died in open shootings. He further disclosed that 400 out of the 700 killed by armed non-State actors died in captivity while 300 others were killed in open shootings. Umeagbalasi added that within the same period, 3,500 young people were arrested by State actors with about 1,400 of them paying through their noses to secure their freedom while over 1,500 of the arrested persons were still being detained in various detention facilities within and outside the State.

In furtherance, he disclosed that about 1,200 houses were burnt with their 30,000 owners displaced while 500,000 citizens of the State in active age brackets were forced to flee to escape being shot, killed, abducted or disappeared.” We want to remind Ndi-Imo that when President GoodLuck Jonathan accepted defeat in the 2015 presidential election, he said that his victory didn’t worth the blood of innocent Nigerians. But here in Imo State, the reverse is the situation, as we have an emperor Hope UZODINMA of All Progressives Congress (APC) who believes that the blood of Imolites justifies his reign of terror as he has sworn to continue to hold strong to power and seeking for Re-election with desperation and venom. Oh! What has happened to the conscience of men? Unfortunately, many have given their souls to the devil; they don’t feel empathy for Ndi-Imo anymore.

Insecurity has become a means to “cash out” among the college of political “Guymen” in Imo state but we have expectations that no matter how the storm blows, even as the population of Imo State has reduced with the reckless reign of “GUYMEN” government as led by Emperor Hope UZODINMA, Ndi Imo shall resurrect on the 11th day of November 2023. We shall resurrect with the best alternative option as the next Governor of Imo State. Some time ago, being in a little trance, the inner spirit said to me, “Rise up from the fall, it’s the Fall of Imo but the Rise of Imo awaits for the comfort of the people. It said to me again, it’s time to comfort Ndi-Imo that the heavy cry of death will be no more and Imolites who ran away for safety, will return. We wait patiently until Imolites will return their businesses back home in Imo, but it depends on the choice we will make on November 11th 2023. The spirit said to me, remember that through one man (Dr. M. I. Okpara) Old Eastern Region was built, and through another man (Dee Sam Mbakwe) old Imo State was economically consolidated. But today, the thorn in the flesh of Ndi Imo is through another man called Hope Uzodinma.

I can only see the skeleton of our people littered all over the streets, roads and undiscovered bushes where the vultures are feeding fats on the carcasses of the lifeless people. Imo has become a cemetery with painted grave marbles shining like stars. The remaining citizens alive, are living in abject poverty and penury as the streets of Owerri are full of “Igbo Alarmajaris,” “beggars of underage.” How many families in Imo can afford one square meal a day? The “GUYMEN” oppressors led by Hope UZODINMA are living extraordinary prodigal lives with the State funds.

The “GUYMEN” have used poor education quality and hunger as a means to keep the people in perpetual servitude. The poor sense or standard of leadership has made our people not ask the right questions to the so-called neo-leaders. We clap at the space of a Governor shining road for us, showing how we have lost a sense of quality. we compare failures with failures. We’re living in an unorganized State. We have had Governors who came to destroy and loot Imo State. Like my friend, Lucky Dube said: “What it takes millions of people to build many years ago, it will take one “Stupid, Foolish Man” to destroy”. It hurts me deeply that the said prophesy of Lucky Dube has been fulfilled in Imo State. In the same political view of Mallam Aminu Kanu, I can say that the political movement of Imo State is one step forward and then three steps backwards.

What millions of old Eastern Nigerians and old Imo people built, one man’s political desperation destroyed it within 4 years. What four years of governing terror and fear, the reign of shooting. Shooting on air, shooting at the sky, shooting on the road, but it is quite excruciating when bullets are opening the chests and skulls of Imolites, especially the young in Imo State. Our streets went quiet, our roads became desolate, “Unknown Known Gun-men” took over. Today, in our very eyes, Orlu has collapsed as all the High Court Judges in the Orlu zone have run away as the High Court there has been relocated to Owerri. What does this signify to you? Was Orlu captured during the Biafra genocide of 1967/70? But in the reign of “GUYMEN” led by Hope UZODINMA, Orlu is captured. The history shall be passed down to our children’s children, our generation, that during the reign of “GUYMEN” in Imo State, Orlu was captured.

Is this not a sign of failed State? Is this not a mark of a destroyed State?

Some time ago, some vibrant Imo young men based in Abuja from Amiri and Ihitenansa told me that they wouldn’t come back to Imo State again. In agony, they narrated how an illustrious Imo son could have been maimed by the so-called Ebube-agu, yes the Ebube-lizard of Governor Hope UZODINMA! That’s the Ebube-agu that instituted jungle justice in Imo State at the pleasure and behest of the “GUYMEN” government in Imo State. Ebube agu is the most wicked recruitment of some criminal-minded youths illegally floated and/or created by Hope Uzodinma. If there’s any well-disciplined man from Imo State that is in Ebube-Agu, then we will proceed to a compulsory exile from Imo State. There’s no reasonable Imo youth in Ebube-agu, all that were recruited are external hooligans, youths of questionable characters with a history of countless Armed robbery cases against them in their respective villages. Ebube-agu is an assemblage of hooligans, prodigal sons and men on “colos” who “travel” and sniff out the lives of young Imolites on a daily basis like professional killers. What do you expect from a well-known village rascal recruited into the Ebube-agu cult by the “guymen” government? The responsible, well-to-do youths in our communities that have advised the rascals to be useful with their lives in their prime have become their prey and/or victims. Ebube-agu has become a militia, a cult group to the blood-tasty government of emperor Hope UZODINMA, part of the street men who don’t know the value of human life.

They shall not govern Imo State, again.

There’s a one million question every Imolites should boldly ask and answer himself or herself: “What is the occupation of Hope UZODINMA before he joined politics?” Hmmm, while we say that Imo will rise again if Imolites rise from their spell, we shall not hesitate to reveal our readiness to unveil the credible alternative for Ndi Imo within 21 days, from today. Ndi “GUYMEN” agaghi achi Imo ozo!

JAMB and why it was established by Charles Chidi Azodo

0
It is shocking seeing how what started off as a laudable objective to standardize and rationalize the university admission process has over the years been under performing and it's system being undermined and it's credibility challenged over time.
It is shocking seeing how what started off as a laudable objective to standardize and rationalize the university admission process has over the years been under performing and it's system being undermined and it's credibility challenged over time.

JAMB was created in response to the growing demand for a centralized, transparent, and efficient admission process for Nigeria’s higher education institutions. The idea was to standardize admission requirements and processes into our universities and enhance diversity in student enrollment in the various universities throughout the country. In addition, its other goal is to reliably measure candidates’ abilities and determine their suitability for higher education. At its inception, the country had about 12 universities in 1978. Prior to its establishment candidates were applying to various universities for admission. They will have to travel to such universities or their designated centres to sit for the entrance exams. Many students met their untimely deaths due to road accidents plus most parents couldn’t afford the associated costs such as transportation and accommodation for their wards during this period.

Furthermore, different universities had different standards and requirements and above all these universities were giving preferences to candidates coming from their areas of location known as catchment areas. The result was that these universities funded by the federal government were looking like ethnic enclaves with no reflection of ethnic diversity. The result was that many states started establishing universities to enhance opportunities for students from their ethnic groups. It was this sentiment that informed the establishment of state universities and second-generation universities by states and the federal government – to deepen and broaden diversity and opportunities for qualified candidates.

In addition, many universities in the north initiated preliminary schools attached to their universities to prepare those students from the north who didn’t pass JAMB or make their papers in WAEC for direct university admissions after one year. These remedial programs were intensive and helped the North to catch up. Running closely with this was the establishment of schools of science and art and technology too. These also provided opportunities for direct entry into the university. Say what you may about the military administration from 1970-1978, they were imaginative in creating institutions to strengthen national cohesion. This included the NYSC. That these institutions are not performing up to expectations should be blamed on the civilian politicians.

JAMB was so competitive that the best of our best stayed at home and attended university here. The universities were fairly funded and attracted the best of intellectuals and academicians internationally and locally. Naira was strong then. Those who went abroad were those who couldn’t gain admission or whose parents had the resources to send them abroad. By 1978 the 12 universities could only admit about 12,000 students against the background of about estimated 700,000 that sat the exams. The competition was intense and so were the preparations.

It is shocking seeing how what started off as a laudable objective to standardize and rationalize the university admission process has over the years been underperforming and its system being undermined and its credibility challenged over time. The allegations of theft and mysteriously missing funds and result scores tampering have combined to erode its integrity and legitimacy. Cheating in the exams became rampant and candidates with high scores would end up at the various universities not meeting expectations. This raised lots of questions about the credibility of JAMB results. Above all the universities realised that a centralized admission process denied them control and additional sources of funding.

So they complicated the process by introducing post-UMTE exams to verify the credibility of JAMB results. The outcome was an additional layer of admission plus associated costs to parents. In response to complaints of cheating,  the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) introduced a full-scale computer-based test (CBT) in the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to eliminate examination malpractice and to facilitate examination registration and prompt release of results. Still, its capacity hasn’t improved much as poor conduct of examination and late release of results as well as cheating seemed to persist. With declining secondary school preparation and tutorial came the emergence of various examination centres that prepare students for exams. Many were not registered and they helped in perpetrating fraudulent exam malpractices on behalf of their candidates.

Some are calling for the abrogation of JAMB but those are either ignorant or are concerned about raising money. I think the overdrive by JAMB to raise revenue for the government rather than invest in enhancing its capacity is contributing to the poor performance. I don’t know how the revenue it generates is applied but I think there is a need to consolidate the admission process by sharing the revenue with the various universities and on a rotational basis involve the various academic registers of the universities in the conduct of the examination

We must get to improve its performance and this will include reevaluating the process and systems and rationalizing its structure and establishing minimum competencies for those running the institution. I think recruiting from the cadre of university academic registers would be better than vice chancellor academics. Further engaging the universities on a rotational basis and sharing the revenues with them would help.

The Great Mohammed Ali was the world champion, the people’s champion, and the greatest!

“Before we left for Italy, I tried again to meet Sugar Ray. I walked all the way up Fifth Avenue to 125th Street. I wanted to get his autograph and tell him that l was on my way to the Olympics to win a gold medal. I wanted to tell him that I admired him and that I was going to be the heavyweight champion of the world by the time I was twenty-one. When I arrived at the club, I waited outside all day for Sugar Ray to get there. I didn’t mind waiting; I would have stood outside all week if I had to.

“It was about ten o’clock when he finally drove up. I was so excited that for the first time in my life, I was speechless. When I pulled myself together, I walked up to Mr. Robinson told him how far I had come just to see him and how long I had been waiting to get his autograph. I told him that I was going to be the heavyweight champion of the whole world and that he was my hero.

“When I think back, I realize he never really looked at me. He gave me a quick pat on the shoulder and told me, ‘Later, boy, I’m busy right now.’ I was crushed. I couldn’t believe he brushed me aside like that, especially after l had waited all day for him to show up. I felt as if my feet were made of cement. I couldn’t move. I just stood there as I watched Sugar Ray Robinson turn his back to me and walk away. Although I felt hurt and let down, I decided that I wouldn’t let my disappointment get the best of me.

“I was going to be different when I became a great boxer. I would be the kind of champion that fans could walk up to and talk to. I would shake their hands and sign every autograph, even sign some autographs in advance so that when I was in a hurry, I could still hand them out to people, assuring everyone went home happy. I was going to go out of my way to show my fans how important they were and how much l appreciated them. At that moment, I vowed never to turn a fan away.

“I didn’t want anyone to feel the disappointment and hurt that I felt that night. I was always going to make time for the people who looked up to me; especially children. I knew that when I became a champion – and I knew that I would – I was going to remember what it was like before I made it big. I wasn’t going to forget where I came from. I was going to be my own kind of champion, a champ to all people everywhere in the world. And no matter how high I climbed up the ladder of success, I was going to view the world without looking down on anyone. And wasn’t going to forget the boy that I once was.”

– Muhammad Ali

And did great Mohammed Ali do that? Yes! And more, he was the world champion, the people’s champion, and the greatest!

Asari Dokubo the man behind the so-called Unknown gunmen recking havoc in the Southeast – By The Renaissance

A former Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chuks Ibegbu, on Tuesday reacted to the formation of a Biafran government by former Niger Delta warlord, Asari Dokubo.

UNDER former President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s Southeast region, the most peaceful at the time, suddenly exploded in a wave of inexplicable violence. Prisons, police stations, court houses electoral commission offices and random public establishments were attacked by armed gangs and razed. Individuals were kidnapped, hacked to death or gunned down in broad daylight by hooded men who escaped without a trace. Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of Late Prof Dora Akunyili, one-time Minister of Information and DG of NAFDAC, was gruesomely murdered by these men in an attack with no obvious aim other than to instil public fear. Many went missing and were never found. Gloom descended on the peoples of five states best known for their industry and enterprise.

Late Dr Chike Akunyili And Prof Dora Akunyili were killed by the so-called Unknown gunmen.

For years, not a single one of those crimes was solved. Not a single culprit was successfully apprehended and prosecuted by law enforcement operatives. Officially, fingers were promptly pointed at IPOB, the pro-Biafra agitating for the self-determination and independence of Biafra, defunct Eastern region, for every incident – sometimes even before investigations formally opened. IPOB vehemently denied these accusations. But government propaganda was too strong. Many soon believed the government and joined to demonize IPOB for mindlessly turning the region into a war front. Gradually, everyone began to realize that there was something fishy in the official position.

Federal and state authorities had all the means to nab the gangsters but preferred to issue increasingly sterile press statements instead. It soon became clear that the armed forces, police and other official security agencies were either in cahoots with the criminals or consciously turning a blind eye to their activities. In villages across the Southeast and North Central regions, locals began to notice that whenever the Army and Police showed up for patrols, Unknown Gunmen or armed “herdsmen” followed shortly afterwards. It was as if the patrols were surveillance missions for the bad guys. So, villagers took the hint and scampered for safety whenever those who were supposed to protect them reported for duty. It was even law enforcement officials who coined the moniker, “Unknown Gunmen”(UGM) to describe criminal elements they were paid to hunt down. People with experience in security matters soon concluded that Nigeria was dealing with “false flag operations” – crimes deliberately committed (in this instance by secret agents of the state) to incriminate an innocent party in order to achieve some dark political objectives. The problem was: There was no concrete evidence or proof to show the world. Those who were supposed to gather evidence were busy covering the tracks of the criminals.

Asari Dokubo

Well, that mystery lasted until Asari Dokubo, the voluptuous and loquacious Niger Delta warlord, visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja as a guest of the new Nigerian leader, Bola Tinubu. It was only two weeks after the latter’s inauguration. At the end of his visit, Dokubo addressed a press conference from one of the chambers of the villa, a rare privilege accorded only to close allies of an administration. Unable to control his impulses whenever in front of cameras and microphones, Asari said several things which have since become subjects of controversy. One of the few which almost evaded public scrutiny holds the key to the mystery of the Unknown Gunmen. He said he was “in charge of security in six states of the federation” and his boys were responsible for some of the successes in the security situation of the country for which the Armed forces often get credit. To add color to this sketchy claim, he recounted an actual operational experience in these words: “… my men and I discovered a camp in Imo with hundreds of vehicles. Where are the owners? If you want me to show you pictures, I will show you. We discovered their camp, kicked their asses, and sent them to where they belong.”

President Tinubu meets Asari Dokubo in Aso Rock Villa Abuja.

For the avoidance of doubt, Dokubo boasted: “I am a participant in this war, I fight on the side of the government of the Nigerian state; in Plateau, in Niger, in Anambra, in Imo, in Abia and in Rivers state and in Abuja. Today you’re travelling to Kaduna on this road, it’s not the army that makes it possible for you to travel to Abuja, or travel to Kaduna, and vice versa. It is my men, employed by the government of the Nigerian state, stationed in Niger.” In those words, Asari Dokubo blew his own cover. He owned up to working in an undercover capacity or as a non-state actor in a sector which belongs exclusively to the Federal Government. He owned up to extra-judicial killings. He mentioned specific theatres of operation – Imo State and the Abuja-Kaduna highway. He named those who hired and paid him – “the government of the Nigerian state.” It was like a painter framing his own masterpiece.

Three of those states named by Asari Dokubo (Anambra, Imo & Abia) are in the Southeast. Two others and the Federal Capital Territory (Niger, Plateau and Abuja) are in the Middle Belt. Another state (Rivers) is in the South-South. All named territories have one thing in common in the last few years – random, unsolved killings and attacks on members of the opposition, rural farming communities and government facilities. Anambra, Imo and Abia were the epicentres of Unknown gunmen activities in the period leading up to the last elections. Niger and Plateau were the main theatres of operation for the so-called “Fulani herdsmen.” Kuje Prison within the FCT was attacked and inmates were set free. So, what exactly was Asari Dokubo’s “security brief” in a region (the Southeast) where Army and Police checkpoints adorn nearly every hundred meters of the highway? What was he doing in a state (Imo) where a special military task force was assigned to “crush” separatist agitations? What was he paid to do for a country that boasts of about a dozen security agencies with hefty yearly federal appropriations? More still, what “contract” is Asari desperately lobbying to retain with the new administration of President Bola Tinubu for which reason he broke all protocols of civility to support the Tinubu candidacy and gain his attention before and during the last elections? Why has he been so vociferous with his anti-Igbo rhetoric in courting the Tinubu camp – knowing that Igbophobia is one of the favourite weapons of the APC in its struggle to retain power after the failed Buhari years?

If you read between the lines and fill in the blank spaces, all the fingers point in one direction – Asari Dokubo is the man behind the mask of Unknown Gunmen. He was recruited and paid by the Buhari Administration, working closely with the Imo State Governor (Hope Uzodimma), to help deal with the threat of Biafra in Southeast Nigeria by unconventional means. Asari Dokubo in turn recruited, coordinated and paid the men who carried out all those killings and criminal activities to blackmail IPOB and ESN. Plus at least some of the mysterious attacks on villagers and facilities in the Middle Belt region. That’s what he meant when he boldly said, “I am a participant in this war.” The trouble with people who talk too much is that they ultimately talk themselves into trouble. Asari Dokubo has now talked himself into deep trouble – beyond being broke. Not only has he antagonized the armed forces which he was recruited to “help”, he has also given away the identity of the evil masquerade terrorizing the neighborhood.

In trying so hard to corner the next “security contract” after squandering what he was earlier paid for his hatchet jobs under President Buhari, Melford Asari Dokubo Goodhead  has given away his own secret position. He is like a drunken and unprofessional sniper who uses his weapon indiscriminately. His enemies can see clearly where the deadly shots are coming from. His position in the bushes is no longer a mystery. The sniper himself is now a sitting duck. It’s only a matter of time before he too is sniped. That’s the way the cooky crumbles. – Culled from the Renaissance.

AFTERMATH OF BOTCHED MUTINY IN RUSSIA By Lawal Sale

Mr Yevgeny Prigozhin, Head of the disbanded Wagner Group

Many would have thought that the series of incidents, which started in the morning of June 23 this year in faraway southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, would have ended in tearing Russia apart like the current sad event in Sudan but incidentally, that was not the case. For someone like me who lived in Russia for some years and witnessed the breakup of the Soviet Union, I felt strongly that the sudden and brief uprising by Wagner group of mercenaries, led by its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, was kind of a joke that has gone too far.

GENESIS OF THE CONFLICT

Any observer of global affairs and avid follower of the crisis in Ukraine will be familiar with the antecedents of Prigozhin and his group. Severally in the past, Prigozhin had been protesting and threatening fire and brimstone against the Russia’s military establishment, particularly Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Geracimov. From what I understood, the Wagner chief felt that he was not well-supported by the military in his contracted assignment of fighting alongside the Russian forces in Ukraine. Even though, there might have been some disagreements between the three personalities, but that should not have degenerated to the betrayal of President Putin who has been Prigozhin’s benefactor and longtime ally. From all indications, Putin made Prigozhin what he is today. Ironically, the two men are from St. Petersburg.

Prigozhin’s action did not only betray Putin but was also a letdown to Russkiy narod (Russians in general). It is pertinent to note that from the Russian standpoint, citizens’ participation in the Special Military Operation (SMO) in Ukraine is a national service and should also be seen as a sacrifice by any Russian. This is because the war going on in Ukraine is largely perceived as a proxy war against the existence of Russia by the Western powers, led by the United States.

RUSSIA TOO BIG FOR MUTINY TO SUCCEED

Although Russia had a long and tortuous record of experiencing and surviving in many battles in its political history, dating back to the Tsarist era between 1480 and 1917 as well as the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, today’s modern Russia appears more united, resilient and stronger, in spite of the perceptible challenges facing the country for over a decade now. Like I said earlier, many concerned observers, especially the West, its allies and media, tacitly believed that Prigozhin’s brief march towards Moscow would lead to the collapse of the Putin regime and, perhaps, the existence of Russia, a major military power in the world.

However, the composure and mien of Putin, as well as his intellect somewhat averted what could have led to a bloodshed in Russia. All Russians — the military establishment, the elite, the opposition and even Wagner fighters — also exhibited patriotism, camaraderie and love for “Rodina” by not engaging in a firefight or battle. They all appeared to be aware that it would be suicidal and disastrous to fight on two fronts — in Ukraine and at home in Russia.

HAPPY ENDING FOR PEACEFUL RODINA

It is somewhat apparent that some nations, organisations and individuals wanted to sow a seed of discord amongst the Russians, the military and political establishment, but like never before, from President Putin, down to the ordinary Russian citizen, calmness and orderliness prevailed, even as Wagner was approaching Moscow. Overall, it seems like the Wagner incident has ended and efforts are currently aimed at consolidating the Russian unity of purpose in the Ukraine operation. President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus obviously played a major role by mediating and persuading Yevgeny Prigozhin to lay down arms and move to Minsk for talks.

Normalcy has since returned after the brief distraction and President Putin, in his speech four days after the incident, said that the Wagner group would be disbanded, while its members would be free from prosecution over the short-lived rebellion. “We always treated fighters and commanders from this group with great respect, because they really showed bravery and heroism,” Putin said, adding that in the interim, Wagner fighters could join the regular Russian Army, go home or proceed to Belarus. He praised the fighters as “patriots” who had been misled into a criminal adventure.

As usual, the Western Leaders and their Media were very quick to call it a coup without even knowing the details. Oh, the Wester and their Propaganda!

The Begging Epidemic In Nigeria By Azuka Onwuka

0
The Begging Epidemic In Nigeria
The Begging Epidemic In Nigeria

It seems that begging has been normalised in Nigeria. It is ubiquitous. Virtually everybody is begging, irrespective of status. The only difference is the type of begging and the target of the begging. Those at the top of the ladder get begged by those under them and the chain continues downwards. Social media has even made it easier, giving it a veneer of anonymity, which helps to blunt the shame associated with it. The popular term “Urgent 2K” is a product of that begging via social media, which is a request many Nigerians receive regularly from known and unknown social media contacts.

At the airports – local and international – the staff line up seemingly looking like professionals waiting to do their work. But behind the façade is a different picture. Begging and exploitation are writs large on that picture. This time around, all the beggars are in different uniforms: the immigration service, anti-terrorist group, customs, airport staff, or airline staff. Sometimes the begging is subtle, with exaggerated greetings and smiles. If the person being greeted does not get the message, the message is made obvious: “Oga, anything for us? Any mineral or water for us?” At international airports, threats are employed. Certain food items are tagged contraband that will be confiscated except if the owner pays a certain amount of dollars. Many feel helpless and part with some money.

If you play ball and continue doling out cash to these beggars in uniform, you will be given express treatment. But if you “don’t cooperate,” they will turn aggressive and search your bags with anger and scatter the contents. And all kinds of hurdles will be placed on your way to frustrate you and make you miss your flight. At eateries or banks, it is the same story. The security personnel or those who attend to customers make a show of greeting you. The tone and outlandish manner of the greeting sends the message to you that you should “shake bodi.”

At interstate public bus parks, one meets them. Once the bus is full or stops at the nearest filling station to fill the tank, a man appears. Sometimes he may stand beside the bus or even get on the bus. He starts singing Christian choruses and gives a charged sermon and prayer. Then he distributes envelopes and asks for offerings. Naturally, the thought of accidents and deaths flies around the mind of most travellers, which tends to make them more generous at such times. Near the embassies, there are well-dressed beggars waiting to exploit those who are happy that they have got their visas. They study people to know those to approach. Those who look happy are the usual targets because they have likely received their visa and will be more willing to part with some money when approached with a story.

On the streets, there are many well-dressed people walking up and down just looking for the next victim to tell a story that will elicit pity. If it is not the story of how they lost their wallet, it is a story about how their relative is hospitalised and needs a certain amount of money to be treated. From week to week, month to month, many of them maintain the same story, because they know that there is a low chance of meeting the same person twice. But sometimes, they run out of luck and meet the same person they told the same story weeks before. Even when that happens, they are not fazed. They simply grumble about their victim disturbing them and then move on to target another person.

There is no need to mention the police and their known begging culture. The regular ban on police checkpoints by successive inspectors general of police has not reduced the incidence of street begging by the police. Roadblocks are mounted for different reasons but begging and exploitation are the intrinsic reasons. On social media, it is an everyday occurrence. People send private messages to others, telling different stories. It is usually about hunger or rent or hospital bill or school fees. These messages are sent to as many people as possible with the hope that a percentage of them will be positive.

All over the nation, the culture of begging has solidified. Once upon a time in Nigeria, begging used to be seen as a thing of shame. Even though many people believed that only the physically challenged should beg, many physically challenged people frowned at begging as demeaning. For example, I remember an interview I had with Mr Cosmas Okoli in 2008 for my book, 20 Success Secrets of Great Achievers. He said he suffered polio at four and was crippled since then. But he went on to acquire education and become an employer of men and women, including those with no physical disabilities. For him, the worst thing one can do to someone with physical disabilities is to give the person alms. Such alms-giving was tantamount to condemning that person to a life of beggary and ineffectiveness. A person with a physical challenge would be better off if helped to start earning a living, he argued.

Therefore, if those with physical disabilities are being discouraged from begging, what should be said to physically fit employees concerning beggary? For me, there is something demeaning about direct or indirect begging. When someone ingratiates oneself to me with a surfeit of greetings, praises and niceties, all in the name to get some naira notes from me, I feel ashamed on behalf of that person. All sense of decency and worth has been thrown to the dogs. People compete on who would beg harder and who would make higher returns at the end of the day. Funnily enough, some people usually claim that it is because of poverty, lack of jobs, and all the defeatist reasons. But it has nothing to do with poverty or low remuneration. It has all to do with a lack of self-respect and self-worth. It is the same spirit that breeds fraud and bribery and corruption. It is the desperate and never-satisfied spirit; the spirit of nothing-goes-for-nothing.

While beggary feels disgusting to me as an individual, I feel horrified when such a begging attitude is extended to foreigners within Nigeria. You would think that such professional beggars in uniform would respect themselves at the sight of a foreigner, just to keep the shame local. No. At the sight of a foreigner, the expectation rises. And when such foreigners part with some dollar or euro notes, they are hailed as great people and waved on, without a proper check. Begging by men and women in uniform and other workers should be frowned upon by all three levels of government. These three levels of government should take measures to reduce begging. A bank has made its staff, including security officers, not beg. Therefore, it is possible to kill the begging culture if only it is seen as a vice.

Citizens should also use their camera phones to record and publish such acts for the authorities to take action. Official begging is an embarrassment to the nation. Any society with a high level of workers who beg will also have a high level of corrupt officials and inefficient officials who will be more concerned with what they will get from everyone they attend to than doing their work effectively. That is why this begging culture is dangerous.

Bandits were created by President Mohammadu Buhari to oust President Jonathan By Nuhu Ribadu

President Buhari, Malam El Rufai and their Killer Terrorists Nicknamed Bandits and Herdsmen
President Buhari, Malam El Rufai and their Killer Terrorists Nicknamed Bandits and Herdsmen

Bandits are not Boko Haram nor Herdsmen. It all started in April 2014 when Mohammadu Buhari assembled his ardent supporters, promoters and strategists to determine how to remove President Jonathan Goodluck.  Prominent amongst them were El-Rufai, Gen Danbazo (Rtd)…….. A decision was reached to consult Miyatti Allah cattle breeders association for assistance to boot Jonathan Goodluck out of office. Consequently, the National Chairman of Miyatti Allah was engaged to bring in foreign mercenaries. Within a month, 2,000 Fulani fighters were brought in from Mali, Senegal, Niger Republic, Chad, and Libya to name but a few. Further 4,000 fighters were stationed in Niger and Chad on standby.

On arrival, they were assembled in Kaduna under the sponsorship of El Rufai and were addressed by various Northern Leaders including the Sultan of Sokoto, Gen. Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar (Rtd) etc. Specifically, Gen Buhari in his address told the fighters that “the British handed Nigeria over to us the Fulanis at independence. The land (Nigeria) belongs to us. We must reclaim what belongs to us.”He added that at the event that Jonathan Goodluck won the election, the Fulani machinery must fight until they regain control of the country. He assured them that the Nigerian Army was behind them. The mercenaries received initial training from the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy and were sent to 6 camps in Ekiti State, Benue State, Katsina State, Kaduna State, Zamfara State and Borno State.

In the camps, brand-new pick-up trucks, generators etc were provided for them. Nigerian Airforce helicopters were used to provide them essential supplies like food, water, drinks and even arms and ammunition. Evidently, Jonathan Goodluck lost the election in 2015 through a well-orchestrated election organised by INEC under a Fulani Chairman, Professor Jega. Gen Buhari (Rtd) was sworn in as the president. This saw the emergence of a Fulani president through a dodgy election hence the planned violent war was averted.

Contrary to expectation, the mercenaries in the various camps were abandoned, with no more food and essential supplies. The relationship between Miyatti Allah, El Rufai (now a State Governor) and Dambazo broke down. El Rufai arrogantly declared that they were not needed anymore and that they should go back. Consequently, the killings in Kaduna commenced as a warning to El Rufai but it did not bother him. He declared that he had paid the people carrying out the killings and they did not want to stop. The Nigerian police did not bother to call Gov El Rufai to give further clarification on this.

The mercenaries at the various camps decided to go about to find food for themselves by robbing people, going into farm lands and kidnapping.  Miyatti Allah made several efforts to contact El Rufai and Dambazzo to appeal to them to provide money to return these fighters to where they came from. All efforts proved abortive. The mercenaries at this point vacated their organised camps and took to crime. The criminal gangs which emanated from these mercenaries were at this point described as “Bandits” in order to differentiate them from other notorious terrorist groups like Fulani Herdsmen, Boko Haram etc.

Following the untold destruction and killings that the Bandits carried out, especially in Katsina and Zamfara, the Northern leaders in conjunction with officials of the Nigerian Government requested Miyatti Allah to intervene and remove the Bandits from Nigeria. Miyatti Allah returned demanding 150 Billion Naira to settle the Bandits and evacuate them. The Government turned the offer down and restricted itself to the payment of 100 Billion Naira. Shamefully, Godwin Emefiele raised 100 Billion Naira for the settlement as a condition for his re-appointment as the Central bank Governor. Miyatti Allah collected the money and purportedly distributed it but nothing changed. In a bid to control the damage, President Buhari directed that the RUGA initiative be set up to create colonies for these fighters in every state in Nigeria.

My QUESTIONS ARE:

1. Should Nigerian communities accommodate these criminal elements?

2. Why has El Rufai not been called to clean up the mess he created?

3. Does this explain President Buhari’s silence?

4. Is this conspiracy of the North gone wrong? Nigerians think for yourselves?

Will Falana’s low-hanging fruits interest Tinubu?

A Collage picture of Femi falana SAN and President Tinubu

The allegations – or do we call them the road to prosperity – that human rights activist and legal luminary, Comrade Femi Falana, has forcefully pushed into the public domain in the past one or two weeks are too weighty to be ignored by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It is like you have a problem and someone says not just that “I have a solution” but “this is the solution!” You either try his solution or tell us why his touted solution is not the solution. Falana’s argument is that subsidy should first be withdrawn from the rich; if and when this is done, there will be more than enough funds in the kitty to fund government activities and there would be no need to inflict more pain on the long-suffering Nigerian masses who are the ones always being called upon to tighten their belt.

Falana also posits that there is so much corruption and wastage allowed by the rich and powerful; that if the leakages in the system are plugged and the low-hanging fruits, which he enumerated, are brought into the basket by the government with little or no effort – except the political will and honesty of purpose to act against the concerned members of the ruling class – then, there will be no need to multiply the misery and sorrow of hapless Nigerians. There is no denying the fact that Tinubu’s “medicine” in his first few weeks in office has monumentally increased the suffering of the mass of our people – and we are still counting!. Whether or not this is desirable in the short run as some have argued is beside the point. Are there alternatives to the excruciating pain in the land? Falana says there are! Let’s listen to him! If someone says he knows the road to our collective prosperity, we should follow in his footsteps unless someone can prove to us that his road is no road or that there is a better, faster and pothole-free road to our collective prosperity as a country.

Titled “THE REAL SUBSIDIES ARE NOT FOR THE POOR BUT FOR THE RICH”, Falana listed 22 items to justify his argument that the government has ignored low-hanging fruits to gratify the rich while inflicting avoidable hardship on the poor. Hear him: “Globally, subsidies, whether for food, transportation, energy or housing, are part of good governance. So, the issue is not subsidies but who benefits from them. In Nigeria, subsidies are primarily for the rich, by the rich and for the rich. I will highlight a few, how they are being manipulated and how huge sums of money can be recovered not just to subsidize fuel but also to provide funds for development.

1. Additional Revenue of $1.5 billion payable to Federation Account: In July 2015, I drew the attention of the Federal Government to the fact that the 15-year fiscal incentives given to the oil and gas companies operating under the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act had expired in June 2014. When the Federal Government ignored our request, we drafted a Bill for the amendment of the law. The Bill, which was adopted and sponsored by Senator T. Orji, scaled the first reading in the Senate but was not passed before the dissolution of the 8th National Assembly. However, the same Bill was modified and passed by both houses of the 9th National Assembly and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 4, 2019. In justifying the passage of this Bill, Senate President Ahmed Lawan announced that the new law would increase the revenue of the nation by not less than $1.5 billion per annum.

2. Outstanding royalties of $62 billion. In campaigning for the amendment of the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act, I requested the Federal Government to collect outstanding royalties payable by the International Oil Companies under the Act. The Federal Government admitted that the country had lost a whopping sum of $60 billion but my demand for the collection of the huge fund was ignored. The governments of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states then approached the Supreme Court which, on October 20, 2018, ordered the Federal Government to collect the royalty for the past 18 years. The Federal Government confirmed that the outstanding royalty withheld by the IOCs is $62 billion but has not collected it.

3. $7 billion fixed in 14 banks: Sometime in 2006, the CBN yanked off $7 billion from the nation’s foreign reserves and fixed it in 14 commercial banks in Nigeria. The deposit and the accrued interests were not recovered from the banks. When I reported the matter to one of the anti-graft agencies, the CBN claimed that it had forgiven “the forbearance”.

4. Sale of Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank, Union Bank and Polaris Bank by CBN: The CBN took over Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank, Union Bank and Polaris Bank, spent trillions of Naira to revitalise them only to turn around to sell them under the table. For instance, CBN invested N1.3 trillion in Polaris Bank but sold it for N50 billion!

5. Theft of Crude oil: The Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has revealed that Nigeria lost 619.7 million barrels of crude oil valued at N16.25 trillion ($46.16 billion) to crude oil theft between 2009 and 2020. Immediate past National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno, said that Nigeria might lose $23 billion in 2023 to crude oil theft.

6. Theft of gold and other solid minerals: The theft of the nation’s mineral resources is not limited to crude as solid minerals are equally smuggled out of the country by highly-placed criminal elements. Former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Ogah, recently disclosed that private jets are being used by the rich for gold smuggling in Nigeria. He stated this at an investigative hearing on the $9 billion annual loss to illegal mining and smuggling of gold organised by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Mines, Steel Development and Metallurgy. During his contribution at the hearing, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu disclosed that Nigeria lost close to $54b from 2012-2018 due to the illegal smuggling of gold.

7. AMCON is owed N5.4 trillion by the rich: A few years ago, commercial banks were going to collapse due to toxic loans taken by members of the ruling class. To prevent the impending economic doom, the Federal Government set up the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to buy off the loans with trillions of Naira provided by the CBN. AMCON has not been able to recover the loans of N5.4 trillion from about 370 corporate bodies.

8. Indiscriminate import duty waivers: A few privileged members of the business community buy dollars at an official rate while they are allowed to import all manners of goods into the country. In the last five years, import duties worth N16 trillion were waived for them.

9. N10 trillion diverted by CEOs of Government enterprises: The Buhari government revealed on December 19, 2018, that government enterprises, including the CBN, owed about N10 trillion in unremitted operating surpluses as of August 2018. The details were provided.

10. N6 trillion unpaid ground rents by buyers of Government properties: On March 29, 2023, the Senate noted that since 1992, over two million houses across the 36 states and the FCT had been built and allocated to beneficiaries by the federal government without evidence of payment of ground rent on the properties. Consequently, the Senate set up an Ad Hoc Committee to recover over N6 trillion unpaid ground rents from property owners in the country.

11. Stolen crude oil valued at $29.17 billion: A group of lawyers engaged by NIMASA confirmed that 60.2 million barrels of crude oil valued at $12.7 billion were stolen and illegally exported to the United States of America between January 2011 and 2014. This has not been recovered. Also, the House of Representatives investigated and confirmed that undeclared crude oil worth $17 billion was exported to global destinations during the same period. The affected companies are known but the government seems to lack the will to bring them to book and recover the sum of $29.7 billion, being the value of the stolen crude.

12. Oil theft of N16.25 trillion: The Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) revealed that between 2009 and 2020, Nigeria lost 619.7 million barrels of crude oil valued at N16.25 trillion ($46.16 billion) to oil theft. The security forces have not been able to stop the stealing and smuggling of crude oil from Nigeria. However, Tanita Security Services Nigeria Ltd (TSSNL), a private company, discovered pipelines through which crude oil was being diverted from a 40,000 barrel per day Forcados pipeline to the high seas for export. The indicted oil companies, including an IOC involved in this grand theft, are yet to be prosecuted.

TITANIC AND ANGER OF OLOKUN, THE RIVER GODDESS By Festus Adedayor

The Remnant of the Titanic Shipwreck of 1912
The Remnant of the Titanic Shipwreck of 1912

The world is in a mourning mood. After a fruitless five-day search for a missing deep-sea submersible vessel with five passengers on board, its wreckage was eventually found last Thursday. The five occupants on board were killed in the process. The search had been spearheaded by a robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship. The five were on a voyage to see the century-old wreckage of the famous Titanic by the time this catastrophic implosion occurred. The robotic vehicle had found the debris of the submersible Titan on the seabed, “some 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic,” reported Reuters. Named the Titan and operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a U.S.-based company, its passengers included the company’s founder and chief executive officer, Stockton Rush who also doubled as pilot of the Titan; British billionaire and explorer, Hamish Harding; Pakistani-born businessman, Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, as well as French oceanographer and famous Titanic expert, Paul-Henri Nargeolet. They had gone on the adventurous undersea expedition at the cost of $250,000 to each of the passengers.

The original British passenger liner named the Titanic, which its moulders claimed was unsinkable, had sunk on April 15, 1912, 111 years ago. It had collided with an iceberg. After several unsuccessful years of efforts to discover the wreckage, 73 years after, in 1985, a joint French-American expedition eventually found it out. Salvage operations to recover items in the Titanic which is said to lie in the ocean at a depth of about 12,500 feet on the coast of Newfoundland, have resulted in thousands of items found and now conserved by being put on public display. The bodies of the passengers could however not be recovered. A total of 2,208 passengers had sailed in the early morning of that day, on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. Out of them, 1,503 died. The crash of the deep-sea submersible vessel has provoked some interest and comments. One such was a piece entitled The Titan disaster shows the Effect of human hubris in the deep sea written by Karen Attiah, a columnist with The Washington Post. In it, she drew an inference of probable anger of the Yoruba goddess of the ocean, Olokun as the cause of the disaster. This connection was further reinforced when renowned Hollywood director and Titanic researcher, James Cameron, told the BBC in an interview that there was a definite link between the tragic crash of the two Titans as well as similarities in the crashes’ circumstances.

Cameron, a submersible designer, had directed the Oscar-winning blockbuster Titanic. He had said: “I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet, he steamed up full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people died as a result and for us very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site.” Samuel Johnson, the iconic Yoruba historian, in telling the story of the dreaded Bashorun Gaa of the Old Oyo Empire, unknowingly explained the Atlantic economy of centuries ago among the Yoruba. In his narration, Johnson drew a link between the river goddess, Olokun and ancient Yoruba cowries, the only legal tender of transaction that began in the 16th century. As Prime Minister of Old Oyo from 1754–1774 circa, Gaa, according to Johnson, once requested his Babalawo to make charms that would enable him to acquire “plenty of cowries.” He had complained to them that, in spite of his enormous powers and wealth, he had little cowries to flaunt as a symbol of his political power. In reality, this was a manifestation of the competition Gaa faced from other power wielders in the empire, that they might use their financial capacity to undermine his political base. Gaa’s cash crisis was also said to have been worsened by his incorrigible children, who, like the biblical sons of Eli – Hophni and Phinehas – lorded “it all over the country (Old Oyo provinces) (and which) deprived him of the revenues which might have come to him.”

Anyway, these medicine men then gave the Prime Minister ose dudu, a medicinal soap, with which he was to take his bath. They thumped their chests as they asserted that, before sunset, humongous wealth would flood his palace. Unconfirmed reports claimed that the Babalawo had secured the soap from the bowel of the Atlantic, specifically from the hands of Olokun. After the bath with the soap, a mysterious fire suddenly engulfed the Gaa compound which burnt virtually all his belongings to the hilt. However, due to the awe and dread of the Prime Minister’s powers, virtually all sectors of the Empire, from the capital to all the innumerable provinces, upon hearing of this destruction, rose in his support. Gaa’s venomous powers were such that, he could incinerate provinces that failed to contribute to the rebuilding of his lost assets and compound. Not only did they rebuild the compound, but the gifts Gaa also received in cash and materials were overwhelming.

Ultimately, the Prime Minister emerged, like the mythical Phoenix, from the ashes of the disaster richer than he once was. Astounded by the link between his Olokun-given wealth and the disaster, Gaa had asked his Babalawo for an explanation. According to Johnson, he had asked, “Is this the way you promised to get me cowries?” and their reply was, “Yes … by what other means could you have amassed such an abundance in so short a time?” In a journal article written for the Boston University African Studies Centre by Akinwumi Ogundiran, entitled Of small things remembered: Beads, cowries and cultural translations of the Atlantic experience (The International Journal of African Historical Studies, Vol. 35, No. 2/3 (2002), pp. 427-457) the author told the story of how Benin oral traditional history also speaks to the intervention of the Olokun in the prosperity recorded during the reign of Oba Eresoyen.

He ruled from 1735 to 1737. By the way, Olokun, in Yoruba-Edo belief, was not only revered as the deity of the ocean but she was also known as the goddess of wealth. Eresoyen’s cowry boom was said to have occurred when he made a peace pact with the Olokun. Palace remembrancers speak of how Oba Eresoyen initially engaged in an unending tiff with Olokun by using his spiritual powers to close tributaries in his kingdom which denied Olokun access to her waters. A palm wine tapper then mediated between Eresoyen and the Olokun which resulted in the restoration of water to the goddess. In appreciation, Olokun made a pact with Eresoyen that she would requite his restoration of access to her waters with massive wealth. She then heaped mounds of cowries, which were within her territorial grip, in the sky for Eresoyen which his palace courtiers shouldered into the palace in massive quantity. I gave the two anecdotes above to highlight, not only the fertile beliefs, imaginations and rumours that thrived centuries ago, especially in the Atlantic commerce of the time but also the dominant perception of the powers of the Atlantic Ocean called Okun and the lord of the ocean.

Attiah had delved into what she called “the Yoruba religious tradition” where “divine spirits known as Orishas (sic) rule over various cosmic forces and elements of nature. There is Shango (sic) the king orisha of thunder and fire; Yemaya (sic) the orisha of the ocean; and Oshun (sic) who rules rivers and lakes” and what she called “a lesser-known orisha, Olokun, who is androgynous and rules the deepest parts of the ocean where light does not penetrate.” Attiah further wrote that “the Olokun is an extremely fearsome and vengeful orisha, upset with humans for not showing proper reverence… (and) chained to the bottom of the ocean so as to restrain (her) from destroying humanity. The pressure of the deep ocean represents the origins of life and threatens gruesome, instant death for humans. It is for all these reasons Olokun is rarely challenged or disturbed, even by the other orishas.” She concluded in this piece that the submersible’s disaster is a reminder to the world that in spite of humanity’s inventions, it cannot dominate the deep, deep sea.

How true is Attiah’s linkage of Olokun to the submersible’s disaster and how dissimilar or similar is this tragedy from the centuries-old mythic perception of traditional Africa? This debate about the existence of gods, goddesses and attempts to spiritize disasters like the Titanic of 1912 and last week’s have provoked philosophical debates about the existence of spirits and metaphysical objects. Are spirits real? Are there evil spirits? Is the physical the only real thing? If it isn’t, what then makes Attiah’s explanation for the crash of the Titanic unreal, mythic and fabulous, while we concentrate on what we are only able to cognize? While the particular configuration of the Olokun is unknown, the Yemoja, another goddess of the river or water deity, is widely iterated in Yoruba folklore. Many claimed to have encountered this fish goddess who also, like the Olokun, resides in the heart of the waters. Indeed, the Yemoja, taken from Yeye Omo Eja – mother of fishes – has devotees who honour her as a source of life, fertility and abundance and built temples for her.

Some people even claimed to have encountered her in the depths of rivers with dual features of a fish, complete with fins but with human shoulders and head. She is carved out as the Mother with weeping breasts and venerated for her kindness. Yemoja is also the Queen Mother who lives in the depth of the water – the Ayaba ti ngbe ibu omi. Yemoja shares her maternity renown with three other water goddesses, Osun, Oba and Oya water deities. Janet Langlois, of the Folklore Institute, Indiana University, citing ethnographer Ellis A. B, retold the Yemoja story that had often been told as folklore in Yorubaland. Ellis had narrated the legend in his 1894-written The Yoruba-speaking Peop1e of the Slave Coast of West Africa. It goes thus: “Oduduwa, the Earth, given birth to by Obatala, who was the Heavens, also gave birth to a son and daughter. The son was named Aganju and he represented dry and barren land. He then married the daughter, Yemoja, who was life-giving water.

They both jointly had a son named Orungan, who was the sky between heaven and earth. One sad day when Aganju was far from home, Orungan ravished his mother, Yemoja. She sprang from him and ran quickly, blindly away. He pursued her and was overtaking her and about to touch her when she slipped and fell, striking her head against a stone. The impact sent jets of water gushing up from her huge breasts. These waters joined to form a sweet lagoon. Her huge belly burst open and many Orisas sprang from her.” From their manifestations, Olokun and Yemoja are different. The differences are in their temperaments and habitation. While Olokun resides in the Atlantic, Yemoja lives in rivers. Yemoja is benign while Olokun, though is mythically perceived as the god of wealth, could also be a jealous woman who can be deadly. In spite of scientific explanations of the Bermuda Triangle, otherwise known as the Devil’s Triangle, traditionalists believe the calamities wrecked by it in the mid-20th century were caused by the Olokun who, in her anger, and in mysterious circumstances, brought about the disappearances of some aircraft and ships. Some meteorological studies have however referred to Olokun and Bermuda as an urban legend, ascribing the calamities to “diffraction heat patterns (which) give rise to corresponding weather and ocean patterns which, to a large extent, account for the mysteries already noted in the Bermuda region.” Bermuda is located in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean.

So, could Attiah have been right about the anger of the Olokun as the cause of the crash of the two Titanics? Should we be bothered and seek extra-scientific answers to these tragedies so as to guard against them in the future? Attiah buttressed her claim with allusions to what she called the social value of certain perilous journeys. On social media, many have wondered why such potentially perilous elite fancy should detain the rest of humanity. The world had literally been frozen due to the deaths of these voyagers while thousands of immigrants have perished in the Mediterranean without as much as a whimper from the same world. These were, in the words of Attiah, “migrants who are arguably much braver but have far fewer resources… demonized and left to die, despite the fact that all they want is the opportunity to work, to contribute value, to live.” In the same vein, the West has literally shut its ears from cries of reparations for sunken slave ships which Attiah calls “the true symbols of Europe’s ability to enslave people and exploit nature in faraway lands.”Brandon Presser, an Op-ed writer with the Post, had joined in affirming the reckless audacity of man in going behind its province to seek to dominate the aquatic province of fishes. “Water is our birthright but also a force of great destruction, holding a record of everything it claims. To visit the depths of the ocean is not an act of arrogance, then, but something quite the opposite: an acknowledgement of our obsolescence. It’s fitting that the desire to blindly careen toward the ocean floor goes hand in hand with our curious obsession with the Titanic. The felled ship, once touted as the world’s greatest, has remained a parable for nature’s power over the mightiest efforts of humankind to assert its dominance over the planet,” he had written.

While the world is shedding tears about the recent Titanic disaster, Attiah has given us thoughts to ponder. Why is the world obsessed with technological dominance like the Titanic, which “allow(ed) Europe to explore and pillage other countries, wipe out entire peoples and enrich itself by exploiting the Earth’s resources”? The Titanic, she said, “might be a reminder that the deep ocean is the only resource-rich realm on Earth with the power to keep White men from exploiting it.” Is Olokun then that power? So, is Olokun angry that man is going beyond their earthly borders? Or, in the words of Attiah, “Are (there indeed) some realms on Earth that are meant to be mysteries — not to be mastered”? Is humanity suffering from what the Yoruba call agbere, arrogant audacity? Or, is this absolute nonsense, in the words of Austrian philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, who saw anything metaphysical like the link being drawn between the Titanic and an angry sea goddess, as such?

CBN – Tinubu Versus Buhari Clash Inevitable By Dele Sobowale

President Tinubu in a warm handshake with his predecessor, President Buhari
President Tinubu in a warm handshake with his predecessor, President Buhari

The suspension and subsequent arrest of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has brought the inevitable collision between President Tinubu and ex-President Buhari closer than the two of them realize. Buhari, who hoped to have a peaceful retirement in Daura or Niger Republic, will soon discover that he had murdered sleep. Short of killing Emefiele, to silence him, the probe of the CBN ordered by Tinubu will reveal to what extent Buhari and his cabal, including Ministers and Advisers, privatized the bank. Since this is only a short article, it is not my intention to reveal all the facts of violations of the constitution, in which Buhari and Emefiele were involved. Partly, this is designed to warn Tinubu that if, indeed he wants to fight corruption, he could not have started in a better place. This one will test his sincerity of purpose to the limit. To put it bluntly, the CBN was more recklessly looted, “on orders from above”, from 2015 to 2023, than even under the draconian regime of General Sani Abacha. Therefore, the first question to ask is whether or not Tinubu has the guts to step on all the toes and damn the consequences. We shall soon see.

Government Of Conscienceless Liars: “Every government is run by liars, and nothing they say should be believed.” – I F Stone, 1907-1929, US Journalist. Stone, a great American journalist, opened my eyes to the perfidy of government officials worldwide. Writing these columns over thirty years has revealed to me how untruthful Nigerian government officials can be at all levels. But, of all the seven Nigerian governments that I have covered, Buhari’s administration is the one that has made lying a core aspect of their policy. They lie when it is unnecessary and when the falsehood is evident to everyone.

As Tinubu’s appointees go through the handing over notes left behind by Buhari’s people, they will invariably come across horrible deceptions foisted on Nigerians. They will be appalled that Honourable Ministers, Senior Special Advisers, and the President himself can be so dishonourable. A very recent example illustrates the point being made here. Currency change resulted in unprecedented cash scarcity in the country. A court of law made an order that old notes should continue in use. The CBN ignored the order; the President, at first, backed the bank until there was the threat of civil unrest. For several weeks, Nigerians had their money trapped in banks. Relief came only when Emefiele faced contempt charges. One Buhari spokesman announced that his government has always obeyed court orders. He very conveniently forgot that Buhari had broken the law serially with loans taken from CBN on Ways and Means. The Federal Government for eight years turned the CBN into its ATM. More on that later. The test of honesty is money; the test of integrity is power. The President of any country has tested both ways. Buhari failed both woefully.

By now all Nigerians are aware that the Buhari government collected N23.7 trillion in loans from the CBN without seeking approval from the National Assembly, NASS, packed full of spineless and unpatriotic people, in wilful disregard for the laws and constitution of Nigeria. It was not only Ways and Means. There were other documented cases of Presidential lawlessness; instances in which money, earmarked for a more beneficial purpose, was taken out and spent without a record of the expenditure.

Here is one example: Raid On Wheat Levy “ISSUE 14: IRREGULAR WITHDRAWALS FROM PUBLIC FUNDS (=N60,832,040,370.72). Section 80(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) states: No money shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund or any other public fund of the Federation, except in the manner prescribed by the National Assembly.” Also, paragraph 417 of the Financial Regulation states: Expenditure shall be strictly classified by the estimates, and votes must be applied only to the purpose for which the money is provided. Expenditure incorrectly charged to a vote shall be disallowed. “The sum of N13,775,687,264.39 was withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Pool Account, while N47,056,353,106.33 was withdrawn from 15% Wheat Grain Levy…for purposes outside the aim of the establishment of the respective funds, contrary to the provisions of the Constitution and Financial Regulation..”

Despite his low educational qualification, even Buhari would be expected to understand those simple constitutional and financial regulatory provisions. At any rate, his Vice President is a Senior Advocate and a Professor of Law; he also has an Attorney General and Minister of Justice, sadly, a SAN. In addition, at least three SANs are members of his underperforming cabinet. So, Buhari cannot plead ignorance when he ordered the Governor of the CBN to release funds from the Wheat Levy Pool Account to pay for “the payment of earned allowance to Non-teaching staff of Nigerian Universities (N8,000,000,000); “to finance the 2019 recruitment of Police Officers approved by Mr President (N9,056,353,106.33) and “funds borrowed from a special account for eventual release to MOD [Ministry of Defence] procurement of Military Equipment (N30,000,000,000).” Source: AUDITOR-GENERAL FOR THE FEDERATION’S ANNUAL REPORT ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2019).

I have gone to great lengths to reveal how, since a fish rots from the head, the massive corruption in the Federal Government from 2015 to 2023 had its origin, specifically, in the President’s office. Buhari, contrary to the lies told by his spokesmen, was an incorrigible serial lawbreaker. The Wheat Levy was established to promote our self-sufficiency in wheat production and to reduce our food import bill. As we have seen, with evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, Buhari illegally forced Emefiele to release funds from that account for other purposes. Abuse of power. He requested without approval from the NASS. Breach of a Financial regulation. And, he deliberately kept all the transactions hidden from the NASS, who did not ask questions. Nobody can now account for how the N30 billion released to the MOD was spent. To cover up this and thousands of other shady conspiracies between Buhari and CBN, Emefiele was granted immunity. Queries by the Auditor General were ignored. Summons by the NASS were treated with well-deserved contempt; the leaders of the NASS were primed to “see no evil hear no evil, speak no evil” about Buhari – despite the unpleasant odour of monstrous corruption.

Leading Them Into Temptation: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil…” I don’t know Emefiele well enough to know if he repeated the Lord’s prayer during his morning devotions; or if he observed morning prayers at all. I am certain he is fervently wishing to be delivered from the evil which had befallen him. I earnestly pray for him. He was led into temptation very early in the Buhari regime. When the FG established Economic Management Team, EMT – with Vice President Osinbajo as Chairman, in the absence of a cabinet, Emefiele allowed himself to be lured into fiscal policy formulation. From that association came one of the first fraudulent schemes – the Anchor Borrowers Programme, ABP. For the first time in history, the CBN was directly funding a fiscal policy initiative – which very quickly became politicized and corrupted. Having fallen for the ABP trap, the CBN Governor was invested in presidential immunity. He could do anything and not be sanctioned. He was eventually drawn into gross violations of Ways and Means until the debt reached an unbelievable N23.7 trillion. Now, he is alone with the problem; that is what the Buhari cabal thinks.

Probing Emefiele, to some extent a victim of his ambitions and departure from the role of a Central Bank Governor, will however not be as simple as Tinubu thinks. Buhari issued the orders; Emefiele obeyed. The probe ordered will sooner or later reveal the long hand of Buhari in most of the infractions. Wheat Levy is only a hint of things to come. Anybody expecting Emefiele to go down alone is in for a shock. He knows too much, and he is not alone.

TRAGEDY OF AN ANCESTRAL IGBO SLAVE NAMED MELFORD DOKUBO GOODHEAD ALIAS ASARI DOKUBO By Nwankwo T. Nwaezeigwe, PhD, DD,

A Confused, Miserable, Bankrupt and Cash n’ Carry Muslim

I have great respect for such fearless and principled Niger Delta warriors as His Majesty King Ateke Tom— Amanyanabo of Okrika Kingdom of Okochiri and Chief Tompolo Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo. These are men of honour and principle whose pedigrees in militancy are not questionable. This is not the case with Mr. Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Alhaji Mujaheed Asari Dokubo, whose trajectory of militancy is guided by the political compass of his stomach. The people of the Kalabari ethnic nation know their true sons and daughters and Mr. Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k.a. Asari Dokubo is not one of them. Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo contested the Local Government election to be elected Councilor and failed.  He contested the Local Government Chairmanship election and failed. He again contested the House of Assembly election and fail. And when he attempted to cause problems after his serial rejection, he was reminded that as a third-generation descendant of Igbo slaves, he was barred by Kalabari customs and tradition from representing them politically.  The big question then is if Melford Dokubo Goodhead is not among the true sons of the Kalabari ethnic nation, what then is his ancestry?

Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo is a confused man because he is a man who is confused by his miserable Igbo origin. A man without a known great-grandfather, his history as a Kalabari man only began with his grandfather, a slave from an unknown Igbo community. This is the irony of the same man speaking of selling the Igbo as slaves.

I refrained from responding to his leprous tirades against the Igbo not because reminding a madman of his madness is not a worthy assignment but because a man whose kinsman is dancing naked in the village square has his own share of the resulting shame. Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo is only a second-generation Kalabari man whose grandfather named Goodhead by his Kalabari slave master was a pure Igbo slave acquired in the late 19th century by the trading family of another ex-Igbo slave Nagbogbo Harry Briggs.

Nagbogbo Harry Briggs was indeed an Obosi man captured by Abam warriors during one of their raids and consequently sold to the Aro slave traders, who thereafter resold him to King Amakiri of Kalabari. It was this family that named his grandfather “Goodhead” because of his characteristic obedience to his master. Goodhead begot Dokubo who in turn begot Melford now Asari. That was all about his Kalabari ancestry and nothing more. Empty drums make the loudest noise they say! Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo is therefore a second-class slave, being an Igbo slave to an Igbo slave. So his attempt to link his ancestry to the noble Harry Briggs family is a fallacious attempt to elevate his confused paternal slave background.

Likewise, his mother who he claims to belong to Amakiri royal family was indeed the daughter of an Igbo slave housemaid to a member of King Amakiri’s family, who was later sold off in the form of marriage to Harry Briggs for Goodhead his grandfather as a compensation for his good behaviour. Is it not therefore an irony of history that the same man whose grandparents were sold by the Igbo as slaves to families of ex-Igbo slaves will be talking of selling the Igbo as slaves? This is the extent this man called Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo could go confused. I have further reason to refrain myself from responding to him because the man on whose Presidential victory his present state of vile power drunkenness is predicated, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is currently wearing the garb of a clay-footed President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The question is what happens to the likes of Melford Dokubo Goodhead if the Court nullifies Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory tomorrow? This is the one fundamental question such addle-brained political scavengers like Melford Dokubo Goodhead fail to ask themselves.

The Nigeria of today is not the Nigeria of yesterday where everything goes. The Igbo say in their words, Abuzu gba nkiti na-atu onu (the silent cricket is busy digging its hole). Nigeria is currently in a Machiavellian state of political shifting-sand with her tomorrow practically unpredictable. The time is coming when the likes of Melford Dokubo Goodhead will have no place to hide their AK-47. The Igbo would often say, onye na-amaro ebe mmili si maba ya, a ma makwa ebe osi kwusi i maya (a person who did not know when the rain began to beat him would equally not know when it stopped beating him). This is the case with Mr. Melford Dokubo Goodhead now christened Asari Dokubo. If Melford Dokubo Goodhead alias Asari Dokubo knows his true root he would not have opened his mouth to refer to the Igbo as slaves; bearing in mind that his ancestors both through his father and mother were victims of the said Igbo slavery.

But how would he have known his accurate history? How would he have known that his father and mother were direct descendants of Igbo slaves sold to the Amakiri royal family of the Kalabari kingdom? How would he have known that King Amakiri the First, the founder of the present Kalabari royal family was an Igbo slave who worked his way through the thick and thorns of slavery like King Pepple of Bonny, King Jaja of Opobo and Olaudah Equiano to become king? It is impossible for a two-time university drop-out like Melford Dokubo Goodhead to have known his ancestry to the letter. Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo dropped out of the University of Calabar Faculty of Law. He came back to Port Harcourt to study political science at Rivers State University of Science and Technology and dropped out again. And since thuggery and militancy laced with oil bunkering became the quickest means of economic relevance in the Niger Delta he quickly reverted to militancy through which he engaged in bunkering.

Outside his primitive accumulation of incongruous wealth through selfish-driven militancy nobody in Nigeria would have cared to listen to him, much more seeing him casting aspersions to the Igbo— the same people that sold his ancestors to Kalabari people as slaves? I am not in any dispute with Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo over his support for Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the obvious reason that they are fellow Southern jihadists. Moreover Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo stated it in black and white as reported by Greenbarge Reporters issue f June 10, 2022, that he is supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selfish reasons. Hear what he said on June 10, 2022:

“When I was in prison, Tinubu was so kind to me; he paid my children’s school fees. He gave me a house at VGC. He gave my wife a house at Ogba. When Tinubu was taken to the Code of Conduct for trial, I trekked miles and when I entered the court, he came to embrace me after the court session. Dokubo said that Nigerians will miss a lot if they fail to vote for Tinubu, adding that he (Tinubu) has many qualities that would lift Nigeria beyond imagination.”

Does the above statement indicate someone with principle, noble antecedents and cognitive intelligence? A serial betrayer and Judas Iscariot par excellence and, master blackmailer; when it suits his selfish interest he lays claim to his cloudy and servile Igbo origin and, when the milk appears not to be flowing from the fountain of his Igbo origin, he relapses into his questionable and foggy Kalabari identity.

He betrayed his mentor Henry Okah who at one time sold his house in South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition for him. Henry Okah is currently serving a prison sentence in South Africa on account of the betrayal of Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo. The same Judas Iscariot Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo not satisfied with the betrayal of Henry Okah went further to betray his first son who is currently serving a prison sentence in Abuja. How can such a man be accepted as a true son of Kalabari land? Impossible! Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo became a Biafran agitator not because of revolutionary instinct which he does not have, or patriotic Igbo spirit which he lacks as well, but because of his propensity towards the insane and opprobrious pursuit of ill-gotten wealth. He was an unrepentant Biafran agitator and comrade–at–arms of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu when the money was flowing. But when the conduit pipe of Biafran sovereign agitation wealth began to dry up he immediately switched over to anti-Biafra and anti-Igbo agitator and subsequently an incorrigible enemy to Nnamdi Kanu.

He scammed Muammar Gaddafi to become a Muslim freedom fighter with the objective of declaring jihad in the Niger Delta, which he failed to do and, instead became a militant addicted to the kidnap of Oil workers and bunkering. This explains why the current Governor of Rivers State made it known to him that Rivers State is a Christian State. When I visited Libya in 2009 at the invitation of the Libyan Government I was offered a mouth-watering incentive to convert to Islam and serve as an alternative to Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo who had by then been declared a persona non grata by the Libyan Government for betraying their trust in him as a Mujahedeen (Holy Warrior) in Niger Delta. I was promised two hundred and fifty thousand US dollars as a primary incentive, which I cautiously rejected on the ground that coming from a strong Christian community I would no longer be trusted by my people. That was after Nigeria’s Senate President Senator David Mark had described Col. Muammar Gaddafi as a madman for suggesting the division of Nigeria into many countries; to which Col. Gaddafi was not happy and personally protested to the Nigerian Delegation during our meeting with him.

It was for the reason of this betrayal of trust against the Libyan Government that the Fulani leadership in Nigeria never trusted him as a true Muslim. He made fruitless efforts to be considered as a worthy Muslim slave to the Fulani throughout the eight-year regime of Muhammadu Buhari in order to be awarded the contract for the protection of oil pipelines. The contract was later awarded to Chief Tompolo Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo. The Fulani know that anybody who professes Biafra and claims to be a Muslim is an apostate. Finding himself miserably abandoned by his so-called Fulani Muslim brothers, he turned into a desperado and made a daring attack on Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. In return, his so-called University in Benin Republic which was considered a scam was sealed off and eventually closed. His so-called Soccer Academy in Abuja was no more and no less an abandoned graveyard. His illegal conduit for oil bunkering was further sealed off by the Military. This explains his recent accusation against the military for engaging in oil bunkering. Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo saw himself bankrupt overnight. His saving grace became the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as APC Presidential candidate and subsequently the temporary President.

Reasonable Nigerians should therefore not consider Melford Dokubo Goodhead a. k. a. Asari Dokubo is a man with a reasonable sense of moral judgment, principle, and political consequence. As a man noted for his shameless state of amnesia, Nigerians should not be surprised if the same man turns against Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support Peter Obi if the former loses in court.

Our Certificates Are All Stolen – By Dr Sunny Oby Maduka(DSM)

President Bola Tinubu has his Education Certificate being questioned in Court
President Bola Tinubu has his Education Certificate being questioned in Court

Frankly speaking, I must commend PMB for making a mockery of all our claims to have been educated in higher institutions. In fact, and with PMB’s Maradonic manipulations, I have come to the conclusion that even the cows that PMB showcased as his personal favourite in farming vocation are much more intelligent than most of us who claimed that we went to Oxford, Cambridge and other Ivy Universities. PMB came, he saw how hollow our claimed credentials were, and he not only messed us up, he conquered our stupid educated brains. This is a man who ruled us without any known certificate, and the foolish Nigerians who have always felt that they are learned defended PMB, and even swore an oath that he was the best qualified to lead a horde of 200 million educated illiterates.

PMB must be commended for his ability to mess up whatsoever qualifications that we’ve been dangling as our own achievements. Our own kind of educated illiterates has no equal, especially when a Professor has to take instructions from someone whose certificate was a WAEC attestation. What else could one say if, in a society of thieves, an armed robber is hailed as the best of all? This was how we have degenerated, and when next someone brags about his or her certificates, remind him or her that there was a time in the history of Nigeria when a ‘certificates’ man ruled. Today, that man has become a patriot and statesman and whenever the council of state meeting is called, he will be accorded the honour to continue to decide the fate of millions of those whose certificates were probably bought in ‘Oluwole’ institutions. If you earned your certificates as a human being, you shouldn’t be amongst the illiterates that will defend someone who has nothing as educational qualifications to show. It’s an aberration that we claimed to have been educated and yet behave as people with certain spells of thoughts.

The same scenario is playing right now in our midst with our present president (BAT), whose degree certificate is alleged to bore a female gender identity. A person whose identity has all demeaning character flaws. Guess who is defending him…those who claimed to be learned. What money cannot do in Nigeria can only be possible when death calls? “One of the greatest attributes of education is that it has the ability to expunge certain spells of ignorance from our raw brains, and the essence is to ensure that whosoever we indulge in, a thorough analysis is conducted with a view to debunking false assumptions, statements, postulations, concepts and theories.” – DSM. PMB has indeed come and conquered the entire country, and I am really ashamed of the kind of education and morality values and standards that the presumed educated people have in Nigeria. It was so sad that the best legacy of PMB was his love for loans, and who will blame him, after all, most of our NASS members were all great men and women, who flaunt their educational qualifications with impunity, and at the end, bequeathed us with over N70 trn debt. Most of those being hoodwinked were products of Ivy Universities. Yes, many Nigerians will argue that when GEJ was in the shadows of his stewardship as a Doctorate degree holder, what were his economic, political, sociocultural and infrastructural layouts? GEJ didn’t equally merit his qualifications in view of the high level of corruption in his reign, but at least, GEJ didn’t rule Nigeria with impunity and nepotistic audacities. He wasn’t as cruel as PMB, and hence, as worst as GEJ was, PMB’s sad tenure was all in the geomagnetic dimension.

PMB was the head of government and at the same time the Minister of Petroleum. As the head of state, he was the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces, but he ended up with the highest number of Nigerians that were murdered ingloriously and displaced from their ancestral homes. As educated illiterates, we defended his subtle approach to Fulanis incursions through certain policies such as RUGA, Cattle Route Restoration, Waterways and other allied policies. Guess who was at the forefront of passing such absurd laws, and you don’t need to crack your brain, they’re all in NASS chambers, highly educated illiterates. As a Minister of Petroleum, a whopping sum of about $5.8 billion and over N11 trillion were alleged to have been spent on the moribund refineries and fuel subsidies respectively. Sadly and with all our petroleum engineers and professors, no one dares explain to Nigerians why we are still importing petroleum products.

With high revenue yields from crude oil and gas, Nigeria has been degraded as a poverty capital with about 133 million Nigerians under the poverty line. Yet, all our academic qualifications failed woefully for us to explain why Angola, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and other petroleum producers’ countries are enjoying the fruits of their endowed natural resources. As of today, the Angola currency, KWANZA is still maintaining a higher rate than the dollar. Angola, within a few years, is now investing in foreign countries, and yet, we have many educated illiterates with many funfair Army Generals in the midst of our oil-stealing sprees. We gave our oil blocs to Nigerians and foreigners who have questionable characters. While leaders of other countries are exploring and exploiting their natural resources for the benefit of their citizens, Nigerians are being slaughtered, and at the same time, denied the rights to social amenities, and of course, with authoritarian policies. If you speak against this brazen rape of Nigerians by the vampires in leadership, the first set of people who will come after you will be the learned social media analysts, and security agencies, who take sinister instructions from our ‘certificateless’ oppressors. PMB exhibited all manners of oppressiveness, and he did it without any iota of remorse, and in collaboration with Sycophants and Stooges, who claimed that they earned their academic qualifications and achievements ideally. As a matter of fact, we are all guilty of our claims when we can’t stand up to exhibit what we have learned. If we can’t defend our academic qualifications at certain times when the vulnerable in society expect us to help them, we have all stolen our qualifications and should be ashamed to pride ourselves on our empty heads.

Please note, I am not in any way strictly stating that it’s only the academically learned Nigerians that have the legitimate or best interests or knowledge to pilot the affairs of Nigeria. No, wisdom and knowledge can be inferred or acquired by Divine providence or human apprenticeship respectively. But when a society defines certain academic qualifications as part of the criteria for its leadership enthronement, the ideal becomes the critical analysis of what such qualifications have been able to achieve within the spheres of the society’s governance systems. In Nigeria today, it’s an absurd experience for us to have thousands of academic professors or learned men all over the world, and these people are great innovators within and outside Nigeria, but at the time of choosing who leads Nigeria, we pride ourselves on hoisting people whose academic qualifications are zero, people whose characters are fraudulent and who have nothing upstairs in term of leadership enthusiasm or empathy except fraudulent acts. That’s why since the fourth Republic in Nigeria, a thorough assessment of most of our leaders shows that most of them are selfish and insatiable rogues, with no single idea of how to build Nigeria as a country. The only language they understand is divisive behaviour through the instrumentations of tribal and religious intolerance and violent politics. There’s nothing else in their medulla brains than just to answer Governor, President, Senator, or Honourable, and hence, they’re ready to kill, maim and destroy anyone who wants to stop or speak out against them. They have weaponized poverty, and as such, have made politics a business opportunity for the rich. They have cleverly shaped politics into ‘IT’S MY TURN.’ It doesn’t matter whether you have mental alertness or physical abilities, once it’s your turn, YOU CLAIM IT, GRAB IT AND RUN WITH IT. An initiation of MONEY TALKS AND YOU OBEY.

“Leadership is all about the prudent and conscious position that an occupier must have, and in addition to an accurate understanding that he or she is first of all, a citizen, whose power and authority are derived from the citizens, and with ultimate responsibilities to protect them and to provide certain basic amenities for their present survival and future generations continuity.” DSM. PMB must be a study of itself, and the reason could be to ascertain the kind of spells template he used in deceiving those who claimed to be educated. Was it that his smiles were infectious or that his stone face was deadly? I kept on wondering how come that most Nigerians who claimed that they were educated followed PMB like Zombies for the past eight years without going back to review their past educated study notes. We were all confused bunch of Confusionists, and today, PMB has left Nigeria in chains. Yet, those who claimed that they are educated are still hailing him till date as the best thing that has ever happened to Nigeria.

Are we not CURSED?

Well, who will blame PMB, after all, the fraudulent 2023 elections were all conducted by professors. These are intellectuals, who ought to maintain the highest standards of moral values. We have equally seen certain ugly judgements by those who claimed to be learned, judges. Judgement of the number four ranked graduate being given a pass mark to be a first-class winner, and today, he’s in charge of a state. We have seen judgements where candidates who were not part of their parties’ primaries were declared as winners of elections that they were not primarily part of. We have seen journalists being pocketed by criminals in leadership positions because of a few colourist brown envelopes. These are supposed to be men of honours but who have messed up their academic achievements and qualifications.

PMB, in the last days of his tenure, took all Nigerians around their mental delusions, with our bogus qualifications, we hailed him as he commissioned projects that were yet completed. The Newspapers and all media houses carried the news as if they were bereft of their own mental health analysis. We make a mockery of ourselves while promoting illusionary projects. A typical example was the Dangote Refinery. Experts have propounded that the refinery won’t commence operations until 2024 or thereabout. Yet, we made so much funfair as a people under the influence of mental disorders. Dangote Refinery, though hailed as an individual great initiative, was the reason why we can’t access BTA, PTA or use our ATMs in foreign countries to access dollars or pounds. PMB and Emefiele gave Dangote Refinery a priority over our wellbeing, as such, while we struggle to get forex at an exorbitant rate of N750 per dollar, Dangote has a windfall of N169 per dollar. All our forex was all channelled into Dangote Refinery while the citizens were suffering. Nobody, not even those who claimed to be highly educated challenged the excesses of PMB’S punitive policies. PMB was not only complicity and complacency, but he never gave any hoot about accountability in his regime’s stewardship scorecard. Rather, we dust up our archives, and only to praise a woeful failure. We gathered to galvanize failures, and even as we pride ourselves on the emptiness of our academic laureates.

PMB has bequeathed Nigerians with elections, globally observed as the worst ever happened in Nigeria. The reality of this sad complacency is that a regime that started on a fraudulent pedestal through INEC select process has put all Nigerians in a quagmire of fuel subsidies wahala. All Nigerians are tasting the first fruit of a fraudulent selection process. To cap our stupidity, the Minister of Aviation, a relative of PMB stunned all Nigerians when he bought 10 fire trucks at a whopping sum of N12 billion Naira, and to date, no inquiries, especially from the procurement compliance unit of FGN. To crown the madness, PMB’S regime made a fool of all citizens when it rented an aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines that was flown from Isreal. The plane was painted in Air Nigeria colours, and while we watched as Mumurists, FGN did a sham unveiling presentation in Abuja on the 26th of May, 2023, and within 24 hours, flew the plane back to Ethiopia. The same plane was then rebranded back in Ethiopia Airlines colours and an estimated N139 billion was wasted. Those who claimed to have the best qualifications in aviation and transport studies did nothing to prevent or even explain to Nigerians the true nature of what transpired.

Today, all Nigerians are suffering from the obnoxious policies system of PMB as it connects to fuel subsidy scams. Nigerians have demanded the list of the beneficiaries of the fuel subsidy scheme, and guess those who are opposing the people’s demand, the same oppressors, who claimed to have an academic status that was devoid of questions. The same hordes of academic wool-winks, who may probably be part of the fuel subsidy scam are defending the status quo. How can any sane person defend NNPC’s corrupt-infested leadership that has not been able to account for an alleged over $ 11 billion in revenue for last year? How can we be brainwashed to the extent of asking NNPC management about the crude oil swap arrangement that will make Nigeria not spend a dime on a refined product sent back to Nigeria? NNPC has not remitted any money to the federation account for months or even years as alleged, but it’s using fuel subsidies as collateral. Can NNPC tell all Nigerians the total accruable income from the removals of subsidies for diesel and kerosene? Entire Nigeria is a scam, and NNPC must be made to account for all sums of money accruable to the citizens of Nigeria urgently, and anyone found culpable to this heinous crime should be sentenced to death without any options. These greedy people have sentenced many Nigerians to their early graves, and why should they not taste the same oppressive medicine that they did prepare for Nigerians these years.

PMB’s regime recorded the highest number of strikes ever witnessed in Nigeria, especially with the ASUU and Medical Practitioners. Our healthcare and educational systems were nearly destroyed, and hence, we have the highest JAPA Syndromes of our children on educational pursuits and medical personnel being poached abroad. It has become more interesting when NLC called for a national strike in protest against the fuel pump price increase from N185 to N537 per litre. As expected, many beneficiaries will kick against the strike. It’s the beauty of democracy. Everyone is not expected to hold on to the same view as others. I wasn’t really perturbed about the government’s defence mechanism against the NLC strike, which was equally expected. But I became worried when the entire process was turned into tribal and political party sentiments. The same people who claimed to earn certificate qualifications legitimately were the first to accuse the NLC President, Comrade Ajero of using the strike action to further Obi’s election petition. Their flimsy reasons were that Comrade Ajero was an Igbo man and that Labour Party was fully involved in politics during the campaign period. I was amazed at such contorted views. That means that when Comrade Adam Oshiomhole called for strikes those days, he wasn’t partisan. In 2012, when all civil societies, NLC and activists gathered at Freedom Park in Ojota to denounce the GEJ fuel price increase and removal of subsidies, wasn’t Labour Party in existence? Even PMB and BAT championed the movement at that time in collaboration with the NLC, and yet, it wasn’t partisan for NLC to call for strikes then, but now.

“In Nigeria, citizens are ready to die in defence of fraudsters in government circles, especially when a tribe or religion identity must be promoted; and in return, they are made to pay for the failures of their oppressive leaders in a collective misery” – DSM. PMB dealt with the Igbos, especially in obeying the court verdicts to release MNK. He equally denied the SE of anyone as a representative of SE in the military hierarchy. He boldly derogated the Igbos as a DOT, and unfortunately, the only visible thing built was the second Niger Bridge. For everyone’s information, the second Niger Bridge is not a project for SE alone. The beneficiaries are beyond SE because most SS states are within the same boundaries as SE which will benefit from the bridge project execution.

In our blindness, we refused to accept the abracadabra of PMB when he built a Refinery in Niger Republic. Open the Northern borders while the South was under keys and locks. We failed woefully to appraise how much was expended on the construction of railways, highways and vehicles dashed to the Niger Republic while our infrastructures were glorified dead traps. But each time I talked about the wastages of PMB, I would be reminded of the second Niger Bridge and then annexed as a tribal bigot. Whether it’s true or not, a video clip of a magnificent palace was shown as PMB’S residence in Niger Republic, and that could be the reason why he said that, if Nigerians disturbed him, he would relocate to Niger Republic. A tale of an oppressor telling you that he owns you and that you can’t question his stewardship.

The irony of obtaining big certificates in Nigeria is that it can make the owners the most foolish persons, dafts, sycophants, stooges, lazy, pretenders, and at the same time, can stoop so low to serve fraudulent illiterates just to survive as slaves. This is the summarized reality of most Nigerians who brag over their academic credentials but end up as paranoids in plagiarism and low life esteem for morality values and principles. These are the agonies of a society where evil vices are applauded while right-doings are shunned….a society that prefers their oppressors to lead them, and at the end, the citizens are quarantined in the dustbin as a people without any sense of their own. A self-made tragedy that has ruined Nigerians, and unfortunately, we are back to the same track as the past damaged tracks in 2023. “A society where many professors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, journalists, bankers and politicians with bogus certificates are used to defraud the vulnerable citizens of a nation is probably a citadel of STOLEN CERTIFICATES.” – DSM.

AN EX MUSLIM HAJIA BINTA FARUK’S CONVERSION STORY

Binta Faruk Jalingo was a staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Yola. She runs Tabitha Evangelistic Ministry, a home for the persecuted (Converted Muslims) in Miango, Jos Plateau State, Nigeria.

“The Genesis of my conversion started in the University of Nsukka, I had a roommate called Chinwe, this lady loved praises, she will sing like this; come and join me sing Halleluyah I was always looking for a way to deal with her, one day while coming from the House fellowship, she kept her Bible on my bed and I asked who kept the Bible on my Bed, she said sorry, Binta, I carried the Bible and I tore the Bible, then I beat her. She took a piece of the Bible and cried to the heavens and called my name three times, Binta Jalingo, Binta Jalingo, Binta Jalingo, this Bible you tore, you will use it to preach the Gospel. Then I slapped her again, I said, it is your mother and your father that will preach the Gospel, she said, may the Lord have mercy on you, Binta. After seven years of the spoken words, I got converted on the 25th of September 1999. I was in the bedroom in Shehu’s palace, because I got married to the younger brother of the Shehu of Bornu. I was born into the Muri kingdom, which is mostly Fulani. My mother, Hajia Aminat Jalingo, is of the Kutep tribe. Contrary to the Islamic tradition of multiple wives, my father married and maintained only my mother. I am the fifth of nine children. My father lived in many parts of Nigeria, serving in the Army till 1996. My mother also worked with the Nigerian Medical Corps until her retirement in 1992.

I attended the Army Children School, Ikeja Cantonment, Lagos, and completed my secondary education at Government Girls’ College Enugu. I studied Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). After my studies, in 1996, I worked as Programme Producer/Director with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Yola. I got married on April 27, 1997, and God blessed us with a set of twin boys – Hassan and Hussain.

I never believed that I needed salvation for whatever reason because every Moslem is convinced that Muhammad was the last Prophet in the long line of those that Allah had sent before. The Islamic Hadith (Mishkat) speaks of about 124,000 people who lived at various times in history. Twenty-eight of them are mentioned by name and most are found in the Bible. Since each of them was sent with a word from Allah to warn the respective people not to practice idolatry, to live righteously and to consider the coming Day of Judgement, it is perceived by Moslems that Isa (Jesus), the one to whom is given the greatest prominence in the Qur’an, was like Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and most others sent to the Jews. Therefore, when I heard Christians call Him, Lord, I became mad at them.

As a young girl, in Secondary School and even as an undergraduate, I would delightfully pack copies of the Holy Bible and take them to Kaduna for destruction, I thought the Bible was demonic. Many are still doing it today, I became the Vice President of the youth wing of the Jamaatu Nasril Islam. Very often, I saw Christians happy in every situation; yet, my success at school, which gave me the job at NTA, and brightened my chances of being a good husband, could not bring me such peace and happiness. Several people had talked to me about Christianity, but to me then, Muhammad was the final seal of the prophets. This was my pride as a Fulani girl who saw herself in the greatest religion of all time.

Qu’ran does not teach salvation in Jesus Christ, but it gives Him the greatest prominence. The wonderful statements in the Qu’ran are enough to compel one to search more about Him. The name Jesus (Isa) occurs about 25 times in the Qu’ran, and the title Messiah is used 93 times.

I hated anything that had to do with Christianity. I was always happy seeing a Christian unhappy and enjoyed hearing that Christians were suffering, but on the 25th of September 1999, I was caught in a web. The day before, we attended the Friday prayers and all went well. At about 1:30am suddenly, an unusually bright light appeared in the bedroom with a mighty wind blowing and throwing all the pictures and other valuables to the ground. My husband and I became afraid. He got up from bed, and brought out charms, known in Hausa as “Hayaki”. He placed it on the ground, got hot charcoal and placed the charm on it, but the mighty wind threw it all down.

Before we could make out anything, a voice thundered, saying: “You have been baptized by the Holy Spirit. Go and be “Tabitha” unto my people”. I asked my husband if he could understand what the voice was saying, but he said that he did not hear any voice. He later concluded that I belonged to a secret cult, which accounted for my hearing voice that he could not hear. He thought that I wanted to sacrifice him or our set of twins. He got angry, took our twins to the guestroom and abandoned me in the bedroom. I was very worried and couldn’t sleep. In the morning, again, I heard the voice saying: “Tell your husband that you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour”. I said “No, I can’t. What has a Fulani got to do with Jesus Christ”, I thought that demons were after me. The thing happened again on the 28th and 29th, and each time, there was an invitation to “come and serve”. So I told my husband that I would go to Church the following Sunday. “Not in this house”, he retorted, He might have received my word with shock, yet joy and peace flooded my heart at that time. I knew what I was passing through and it would be disastrous for me not to do what God would want me to do for Him.

On Saturday, after speaking to him about it, I went ahead and bought for myself the first Bible I ever bought or read in my life, and hid it under my box. The next day, Sunday, I picked up my Bible, got into my car and drove to the nearby Baptist Church.

After the service, I came back and met my husband at home. I greeted him but he asked me where I was coming from; I wanted to lie, but heard a voice saying ‘What were you taught in the church today?’ It was “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” So, I told him that I was coming from the Church. He got up in anger, gave me a beating, snatched the Bible from me and wanted to tear it but I told him of the danger of tearing the Bible, so he stopped. He was shocked because he knew that it was my role in the past. So he dropped the Bible in anger and left till the evening. I brought out food for him as usual, but he kicked the food away and warned his sister that no one should eat the food I cooked in the house again for he had declared me an infidel and as a result, I would have nothing to do with the family, even with my own kids. The next day, he went to fetch my father from Makurdi. As I welcomed my father, he too, started beating me with his military belt and boots, until I was unconscious and was taken to the hospital where I stayed for three days. Wonderfully, on the third day, at about 2 am, the Lord appeared to me. I noticed a touch on my feet and I woke up trying to see who it was that touched me, but the face was shining like the sun in such a way that I could not see his face. I only looked at Him from His feet to the chest. I was afraid and screamed for help. One of the nurses came, prayed with me and asked me not to be afraid again. As I said amen to her prayers, I began to speak in tongues for about three hours. I was saying things they could not understand. Some of them thought I was mad but a psychiatric doctor who was called in confirmed that I was normal.

The figure appeared again. This time He said unto me, “Be bold, for this is temporary: you will overcome the temptation”. On the fourth day, I was discharged from the hospital. On getting home, my husband gave me a divorce letter, which I collected with joy and told him. ‘I am married to Jesus.’

After that, I packed my things, including my two cars, kept them in someone’s house and travelled to Lagos. My husband took my twins to Saudi Arabia. Not done yet, my father had the man that I had kept my belongings in his house arrested on the grounds that he had abducted me from my husband’s house. On hearing that, I returned to Jalingo and arranged his release. Then, my father collected my cars and other belongings claiming that he bought them for me as wedding presents.

In trying to make me renounce my faith in Christ, the Management of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Yola, had my appointment terminated, under pressure from my husband. My father and some Islamic fanatics took me to one Alhaji’s house in Jalingo and there chained my feet and my hands. After seven days, I was released, with a threat of death, if I went to Church again.

My mother arranged for my uncle, her elder brother to reconcile my father and me. As we went talking, my father got angry, picked up his gun and shot at me. As God would have it, the little movement I made at the sight of a gun overturned the seat where I was sitting and I was pushed to the ground. The gun sounded but the bullets did not enter me but passed through the chair and to the wall. Everybody was alarmed, and my mother started weeping that he had killed her only daughter. Later, my mother advised me to go and stay with her elder brother. Being a Muslim, he too was unhappy with me and made life difficult. Once, he threatened to kill me with a cutlass so I left his house for Lagos and later, Maiduguri.

I was denied my rights in the family; my father had me thrown into prison on false allegations. He had initially gone to a Sharia court but I protested against that since I am now a Christian. So, he took me to a Magistrate court at Hadeja. The Magistrate ordered that I be remanded in prison for calling my father, my neighbour. I was in detention for six months without trial and bail until some Christians on prison visitation learnt that I was there for becoming a Christian. The matter was reported to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman who wrote a petition that led to my proper trial. The Magistrate sentenced me to two years imprisonment plus a fine of five thousand Naira. One Christian Women Fellowship in the area paid the fine while I was taken to prison. That was September 5, 2000. Some inmates asked me to appeal but I told them, confidently, that the Lord Jesus would do a great Appeal for me. At midnight, I prayed: ‘Lord, I want you to deliver me from this prison before December. If you don’t, the people will ask me, where is your God?’ I reminded him of how He answered Hezekiah. On October 2, 2000, less than a month after my imprisonment, a letter came from Abuja ordering my release and I was set free. My prison experiences brought me closer to God and I developed more faith in God’s ability to see me through.

After two months, I decided to go and share the Lord Jesus with my grandparents. The Muslim youths were looking for me everywhere, to kill me. They hid me until I couldn’t be hidden. I fled to the bush for four days. On the fourth night, I woke up with a snake beside me. That day, I told God that I wanted to go back to Islam. I couldn’t continue like that in the bush but He quickly reprimanded me. He asked “Upon all the sufferings you’ve been through, you still want to go back? If I didn’t shut the mouth of the snake, wouldn’t it bite you while you slept? I repented and told him that I was sorry; I will never go back to Egypt”.

I found out that God actually took me to prison to teach me some things. One was to read the Bible and two, because of a female Christian warder who left and married a Moslem and God shut her womb. In prison, God told me in a dream that she was going to have a baby. When I told her, she became angry, tortured me, and called me names, but I kept praying for her, that the name of the Lord be glorified since I had said the Lord told me. Later, she actually had the baby, and that converted her and her husband. Eight Muslims in the prison gave their lives to Christ. They were baptized in the Holy Ghost before I left. Seeing what the Lord used me to do in the prison, I knew that I would do better outside. One day, some Muslim youths came and kidnapped me. They laid me on the ground and raised their cutlasses to kill me but their hands remained hanging in the air. That happened to three of them and the others fled. They were later taken to the police who wanted them killed but I told them it was the Lord’s battle, not theirs. I told them that I had forgiven them. As I was leaving, they asked for their hands to be restored. I said “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, let your hands come down” and their cutlasses dropped. Today, they are Christians and live with me. On another occasion, another group of Muslim youths kidnapped me. They were taking me to Sokoto. On the way, scorpions emerged and started to sting them. They dropped me, begged me and even gave me money to take me back home. Yet on another occasion, they kidnapped me and wanted to inject me with poisonous material but they couldn’t find those materials and had to let me go.

The Bible says we must start from Jerusalem. Moslems and Fulanis are my Jerusalem. Many of them live in ignorance, not having heard of Jesus till today. And if I am one of the fortunate ones that God brought out, I need to go out and say something to them. That is why I say I would fight the cause with my blood. I am not limiting myself to Nigeria; I intend to go to the Middle East, planting a church in Saudi Arabia where my children are. I tell God that my children in Saudi Arabia are Ambassadors of Christ and they must become Pastors in Saudi Arabia.

So, any time I hear a Muslim is converted somewhere and is persecuted, I take them in. I have forty-nine under my roof right now. They call me “mama”. The oldest is eighty-nine years. She became a Christian and her children threw her upstairs to die, but God preserved her. A Pastor found her and brought her to the centre. Some come with their ears cut off, others are stripped naked etc. I pray for people to join me in this crusade. Thank God. He is raising men among the coverts in the centre and in my family.

My immediate elder brother who is a soldier has become a Christian. My mother became a Christian in 2002. My elder brothers who wanted me dead or back to Islam are now Christians. One of them, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Maiduguri had to relocate to Imo State because of persecution.

I testify that Jesus is Lord. Some people came to attack us. The first time they came, they saw a pool of blood: the house became a pool of blood. The second time they came, the house became plain land. The third time, they saw the ocean. The last time, the house became a pillar of fire. Sometime later, something happened that led to their arrest and the Commissioner of Police sent for me. On getting there, the police brought the criminals who said that I didn’t know them but they knew me. They were all Muslims, some of them from the Republic of Niger. They then narrated how they had to attack me, but I was delivered by the Lord. That day, the Commissioner of Police lined up his men in the office and asked me to pray for them.

Instead of leaving me alone, my former husband began to persecute me. While leading some assassins to my place to kill me, the vehicle in which they were travelling was involved in an accident. He, alone died in the hospital after confessing that he wanted me dead for I was bringing shame to his name. It pains me because both of us were in the same room the day I heard the voice. After that I prevented him from destroying a copy of the Bible, something I used to enjoy doing. He knew how violent I was, destroying Christendom. He should have learnt a lesson from my conversion and repented. That is how many others die without repentance even though they are exposed to the gospel. The good Lord who is always my Shield and Protector will always save and hide me in His shadow. My life is in God’s hands.”

Binta Faruk Jalingo was a staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Yola. She runs Tabitha Evangelistic Ministry, a home for the persecuted (Converted Muslims) in Miango, Jos Plateau State, Nigeria. I don’t know how your feeling will be but as for me, the name Jesus is the most powerful, if you believe the same, then share this with others.”

May God strengthen all that are facing one persecution or the others and those willing to embrace him through His only begotten son!

BULKACHUWA’S BUKA – WHERE THE UNJUST FEED FAT ON JUSTICE By Bolaji O. Akinyemi

Suspicion concerning the possible compromise of the judiciary was first raised by Atiku Abubakar after the 2019 Presidential election. The pioneer chair and President of the Court of Appeal then was Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, she was forced to recuse herself from the panel following a petition by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who alleged the likelihood of bias against him and his party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, on account of the Judge being married to an All Progressive Congress, APC chieftain. Four years down the line, the dirty linen of our judiciary which we are shy of washing in public got torn right before the world to expose the shame of a nation where justice is aware that can be brought and sold if the price is right.

On Monday, June 13, at the valedictory session of the 9th Senate, Senator Adamu Muhammadu Bulkachuwa, who represented Bauchi South took to the floor of the 9th Senate and desecrated it on its closing night. In flair without fairness, regaling himself as he trampled on his wife’s years of service to the nation on the bench, the lawmaker said he had influenced judicial decisions in favour of some Senators while his wife Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa was President of the Court of Appeal. “My wife whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while (she) was in office, and she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues” No one but President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who himself has been dragged before the election petition panel of the Court of Appeal by Atiku and Obi can at least reassure Nigerians of any hope in the Judiciary by demanding that the reckless claim of rape of the judiciary in the desecrated hallowed Chambers of the Senate be probed and if found true, Bulkachuwa; Mr and Mrs should face the music.

Reacting after the 102nd meeting of the National Judicial Council on Wednesday 14th June 2023, the NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, noted that the Senator’s statement made him liable to be investigated and prosecuted even on his admission. He further said it’s a huge negative impact on the integrity and independence of the judiciary. This seems to be the season of admission by APC chieftains of evils we already know are not possible without government compromise. From that of El-Rufai on the subjugation of Christians in Kaduna State and now Bulkachuwa’s of doing his best in the rape of our judiciary process and succeeding at it in most cases. The pertinent questions, therefore, are, which are the cases? How many of our Senators were beneficiaries of this Jankara justice? In our glare, Orji Uzor Kalu, APC was declared the winner of the February 2019 election to represent Abia North Senatorial District in the Senate. Mao Ohuabunwa challenged the victory of Kalu before the election petition tribunal, but Kalu ended up at the senate, was he at Bulkachuwa’s Buka?

The Battle at Kogi West was between the smart Smart Adeyemi who possibly knew where justice is served and may have gotten a full course meal against his well-dressed garrulous opponent, Dino Melaye. Did Smart prove the slang of the streets; “Omo to mo way lo mo iwe”. We may never know unless Bulkachuwa is allowed by the Senate to go the way Ahmed Lawan stopped him from going. In Ekiti, the duo of Adeyeye and Olujimi slogged it out for who will feed fat at the hidden Buka of the 9th Senate where justice is served like pounded yam and efo riro. The ruling, Adeyeye described as purchased! The meal ended with the portion of Olujimi, was she served by Mr or Mrs Bulkachuwa? In Delta, James Manager edged out former Governor Uduaghan to the sumptuous meal at the Senate, the connection to the Bulkachuwas, we may never establish except both the husband and wife are allowed to speak, to follow their hearts at confessing their role at the rape of justice in the 9th Assembly.

Speaking on Mr Bulkachuwa’s damning confession that has elicited calls for investigation, Soji Oye, spokesperson for NJC, told the media on Thursday that the NJC was aware of Mr Bulkachuwa’s confession. “They are on it. The judiciary is on it. We heard it just like every other person. We heard it. But you know she is retired. She has retired from service. No disciplinary action can be taken against any retired official,” Mr Oye said. Asked if the council was considering a probe and review of cases of politically exposed persons under Mrs Bulkachuwa, Mr Oye said, “The NJC is looking at it too just like every other person.” If the NJC is looking at it just like every other person, then the onus is on us not to stop looking at it till NJC sees what we are seeing and does something about it. “The NJC is considering it too because we all heard it just like every other person. It is during the meeting the NJC will take action,” Mr Oye told the media but said he was unaware if Mrs Bulkachuwa’s issue was discussed in the council’s 102 statutory meeting on Wednesday.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Chidi Odinkalu, former National Human Rights Commission chairman, was quoted to have said “The @njcNIG met and failed, refused, or neglected to adopt a position on the most serious issue affecting judicial integrity in #Nigeria” and that “@njcNIG as the institution responsible to investigate the facts of what Adamu Bulkachuwa said & its effects on the judicial system, has instead chosen to unlock.”He added, “This is a disgrace. They spit at the judicial independence and integrity that they claim to defend.” On Wednesday, the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said only the NJC could probe Ms Bulkachuwa Saadatu Musa. As of this moment, nothing has been heard from the Institution of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate whose Chamber Bulkachuwa desecrated. The spokesperson for the Appeal Court is mute. The Chief Justice of Nigeria may have heard or is pretending not to have heard. And the Presidency is a hear something and say nothing mood.

The Renewed hope mantra of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is most needed in the judiciary and this is an opportunity to prove that his government hasn’t captured the leadership of the judiciary the way they did with the Senate. Will justice come out of the ongoing election petition against the background of Bulkachuwa’s revelation of their Buka where the unjust fed fat on justice? Fingers Crossed.

Tinubu fails to join Paris Summit economic panel on stage; asks another official to represent Nigeria By Michael Ndu-Okeke

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigerian in a warm embress with President Macron of France during the Former's visit to Paris for France - Africa Summit 2023

Associates of Mr Tinubu, who assumed office on May 29, had touted the trip as his first opportunity to display his mettle before world leaders. President Bola Tinubu failed to take part in a live economic session at the ongoing summit of world leaders in Paris. The Nigerian leader asked the country’s ambassador to represent him instead. It was not immediately clear why Mr Tinubu could not go on stage by himself, especially as his office previously announced he was in France to attend the summit and participate in a debate about Africa’s economic prospects. The new global financing pact summit is a two-day event at Palais Brongniart in Paris, and organisers said it was aimed at finding efficient solutions to reduce poverty and the adverse effects of climate change on the world’s financial system.

Mr Tinubu was scheduled to join other participants on stage at 6:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. in Nigeria) on Thursday, with his aides saying he was fully prepared for the event as his first since becoming president on May 29. Mr Tinubu was represented by the Nigerian ambassador Adamu Ahmed, who was on stage with David Craig, co-chair of the task force on nature-related financial disclosures (TNFD); Mark Carney of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), Mary Schapiro of global public policy at Bloomberg, Sabine Mauderer of the Network for Greening the Financial System; and United Nations special envoy Catherine Mckenna.

In a prepared speech, which seemed to have been hurriedly put together, Mr Ahmed said: “We believe we’ve more pressing social issues in Africa. The argument has been that world leaders should elevate social issues just like environmental issues. I must commend President Macron who has brought the issue of poverty to the table. This summit is about climate, people and diversity. “The severe financial and economic crisis that African countries found themselves in after COVID-19 is all over. There are economic difficulties, and we’ve all realized that public resources would no longer solve the problem, we need to track private capital and for us to track the capital, we need to compete with other countries around the world.

“It is no longer business as usual for African countries, we now need to join the discourse. We need to compete with the rest of the world. We welcome the idea of President Macron to develop Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) because we feel it is an open free repository that will greatly help African countries. “The message from the African continent is that we are on board, we want to join the international community. We are now seeing movement from mere commitment to concrete transition plans. “For example, in Nigeria, we enacted the Climate Change Act in 2021 which enables us to establish the Climate Change Council in which the president (Tinubu) is the head. It enables us to establish a climate change fund and National Action Plan on climate change which clearly reels our road map to the net zero targets. We put our target to 2060 because we are aware of the enormous challenges we are confronting. We have tried to form regional partnerships as African countries.”

The trip was Mr Tinubu’s first abroad since becoming Nigeria’s president on May 29. It was not immediately clear why he could not participate in the crucial aspect of the summit for which he left the country despite growing complaints about the biting effect of his decision to remove subsidies on petroleum products used by previous administrations to cushion economic hardships. Mr Tinubu has for years used doctors in Paris as he continues to secretly manage serious health conditions. His aides denied that he would be seeing his doctor during this trip. South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa was among several African leaders who participated on stage at the summit on Thursday evening.

Mr Tinubu’s failure to participate in today’s panel, while unusual for such an event, mirrored his strategy during Nigeria’s presidential campaign. As the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Mr Tinubu did not attend several televised debates held in Lagos and Abuja before the elections on February 25, 2023. During a trip to London in December 2022, where he was invited to speak by famed think-tank Chatham House, Mr Tinubu failed to adequately respond to complex questions. He repeatedly yielded the microphone to his coterie of surrogates, a controversial conduct that Chatham House decried as unusual and unapproved because there was no prior discussion thereof. Mr Tinubu said he rejected debating other candidates in Nigeria because media outlets organised the events he saw as unfair to his campaign. He, however, failed to explain why he asked allies to take critical questions on his behalf during his Chatham House appearance.

Never forget the story of Ken Saro Wiwa and Abacha.

Late Niger Delta Activists, Ken Saro Wiwa and his Executor, Late General Sani Abacha

KEN SARO WIWA could not believe what happened to him. Lesson: Do not sabotage your own people’s efforts towards their liberation. On the day of his execution & unable to face his fate with fortitude because he believed that his sentence would be commuted to life imprisonment Saro Wiwa never believed Abacha would abandon him in his hour of need. When they came for him, he kept on asking if Abacha was aware? He resisted being led to the execution point and kept on protesting for a time as he expected reprieve would come at the 11th hour. To calm him, he was shown the execution order signed by Abacha, but he frantically denounced it as fake, demanding an audience with Abacha immediately. The officer commanding the squad, a junior officer told him, the only report his superiors would listen to would be a report of his death and nothing else.

Wiwa reverted to telling his killers how close he was to Abacha; the afternoons they spent playing tennis at 2nd Artillery brigade in Port Harcourt in the 70s, the nice evenings they used to have. That during the Ogoni protests, he had expected Abacha to have called him based on old times and asked him the least Ogoni would have accepted. Wiwa pleaded and pleaded for his life to be spared. His pleas fell on deaf ears. “Oh God”, he screamed, letting my pleas work. His eyes were greasy with welling tears. Why should today be his last day on earth? What crimes did he commit? That he asked for his people to have a share of the wealth that comes from their land? The land no longer supports farming or fishing because of oil spillage. He mistook the officer’s dark reflections for contemplations of pity! Any independent observer would conclude that Saro deserves pity and more. He had worked for it. His efforts during the civil war shortened the duration and saved thousands of Nigerian soldiers’ lives.

You see, while the Biafran blocked Omanelu and Isiokpo axis through Elele Junction, Saro was able to organise guides who guided the Nigerian soldiers to infiltrate through Etche, Alulu, link up to Ihiagwa and Nekede, connect Obosima and cut off the Biafran soldiers who had successfully blocked the 3rd Marine Commandos Advance led by Black Scorpion. Wiwa was rewarded with an appointment as the Civilian Administrator of the port city of Bonny. And it was really this bit of history that was the bone of contention. He rightly or wrongly believed he had an equal stake in the territory called Nigeria, having staked his life and helped in defeating those who were neighbours to him. So, the shares of spoils of war, for which oil was the paramount spoil should be extended to his people, because without their efforts it would have been impossible to subdue Biafra on the battlefield.

Remember that the 3rd Marine Commandos were eventually routed from Owerri, just before the end of the war, wherein Black Scorpion among the few to escape, had to escape dressed as a woman, for which he was court marshalled and dishonourably discharged. Adekunle the scorpion died a pauper, neglected by the federal side he fought for. On the other hand, Wiwa’s erstwhile partners in conquest/crime, believed they have more than adequately rewarded him by making him an administrator of the city of Bonny and also making him a commissioner in Rivers State. So he should keep off the oil, whether it was drilled from his village or not. Posterity would judge who was right between him and those Abacha represented. Me as a scholar, I believe his requests or demands were in order. Eye wey see deal dey follow share. The child who pounded the pepper is entitled to a share. The day he asked about the oil, Wiwa’s fate had been decided. The recipients of the message were people from the oil-producing communities. None would dare ask questions about “our oil” after Wiwa’s execution. At that point, the captain gave his orders and he was lifted up, struggling and protesting till he was tied up and killed. When the question of the whereabouts of Wiwa’s body was raised at the Oputa panel, one of the soldiers giving evidence reported that it was completely dissolved in acid.

This is an intelligent narrative beautifully written. But I should add that Mr Saro-Wiwa – like Adaka Boro and many other “Niger Delta” youths who would betray their new republic – had studied at secondary school and university on Eastern Nigeria scholarship. It should also be noted that because of Saro-Wiwa’s betrayal, he was also rewarded with countless “abandoned properties”, including some previously belonging to Chief John Anyaehie (late father of Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie, CoS to Governor Uzodinma). Late Sani Abacha and late Saro-Wiwa once lived together in one of the abandoned properties he had seized. Ken Saro Wiwa’s son, Ken Jnr also died very young. He died suddenly in London on 18 October 2016, aged 47, after suffering a stroke.

Finally, recall that, before Saro-Wiwa’s arrest, he had run to the same Enugu and the same Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu he had betrayed, to ask for Igbo intervention in his murder case. It was then that Ojukwu uttered that immortal word “Okokorokoooo” to the frightened Ogoni man. The meeting that Saro-Wiwa attended was at Hotel Presidential Enugu, built by Michael Okpara who had given Saro-Wiwa a scholarship to study at Government College Umuahia – and also betrayed by Saro-Wiwa! –  From the archives of the OPUTA panel.

Asari Dokubo, Wike & their likes should watch out because what comes around goes around! Asari Dokubo, Nyesom Wike & others should learn a lesson now before it is too late.

ASARI DOKUBO MILITIA RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLINGS IN IMO, ANAMBRA, AND SOUTHERN KADUNA – IPOB BY COMRADE EMMA POWERFUL

ASARI DOKUBO MILITIA RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLINGS IN IMO, ANAMBRA, AND SOUTHERN KADUNA - IPOB
ASARI DOKUBO MILITIA RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLINGS IN IMO, ANAMBRA, AND SOUTHERN KADUNA - IPOB

For several months now, countless lives have been lost in Imo State by Hope Uzodinma’s militia called Ebubeagu. This murderous militia is comprised of Fulani terrorists, Niger Delta militants, and some Igbo criminals who were recruited by Asari Dokubo for Hope Uzodinma’s murderous activities in his home state.

During Asari Dokubo’s press interview last Friday, 16th June 2023, he confirmed his involvement in the security of some states, particularly in the Imo and Kaduna states. In that interview, Asari claimed that his boys have been involved in security operations in Imo and Kaduna States and among other places.  From his own confession, it’s obvious that Asari Dukubo was responsible for the mass abductions and killings in Imo and Southern Kaduna.

This is the time to call out Asari Dokubo for the mass killings that are going on in Imo State, Anambra State, and in Southern Kaduna. Recall that Asari Dukubo is a Fulani-trained Islamic jihadist. He must be held responsible for all the extrajudicial executions of innocent citizens. We are documenting the extrajudicial executions and destruction in Imo State by Hope Uzodinma and Asari Dukubo’s militias. These murderous militias coded into Ebubagu are responsible for the wanton massacre, forceful disappearances, and burning of properties in Imo State and some border towns in Anambra State.

We have interviewed dozens of victims and eyewitnesses who told us that the perpetrators are men they identified as Ebubeagu militia working in partnership with Nigeria Security officials in Imo State. We have also profiled these murderous men in Ebubagu and found out that many of them are imported terrorists from Niger, Mali, and Chad. We were reliably informed on several occasions that most of the militias are Niger Delta and Fulani boys recruited by Asari Dokubo and bankrolled by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

Two of the Ebubagu boys themselves actually told us that they were working for Asari Dokubo in Imo State. Therefore, Hope Uzodinma and Asari Dokubo must explain their reasons for abducting, murdering, and dumping the corpses of many innocent Igbo youths in a valley in Orlu in Imo State.

It is really sad to believe that Hope Uzodinma contracted Asari Dokubo to kill his own people, mostly Orlu youths where he comes from and his political adversaries. We wonder how Hope Uzodinma would contract Asari Dukubo, who has publicly shown his hatred for Ndigbo to provide security for those he hates with passion. He even publicly called for the killing of Ndigbo, IPOB members, and Mazi Nnamdi KANU anywhere you see them. This contract for killing Imolites ordered by their own governor, Hope Uzodinma to Asari Dukubo, emboldened his social media boasting of dealing with Ndigbo. It is obvious that those who forced Hope Uzodinma on Ndigbo ( the Supreme Court of Nigeria) had a script written for him that he handed over to the radical Islamic jihadist, called Asari Dukubo to implement. But they have failed.

In 1948, Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, thought of the best way to protect his country’s security information from invasive media toxins. He summed his strategy up in one short sentence: take the thief and make him guard.” But a thief would remain a thief even if he is made the chief hunter. A maxim of the Yoruba drives this home: Twenty years after you have made the palm wine tapper king, he still won’t stop casting furtive glances at the neck of the palm tree. Asari Dokubo is a criminal and pig and can not change.

We are blaming the Ijaw people for keeping mute over the insult and disparaging of Ndigbo by Asari Dokubo, we ask them not to say anything that Igbo people kill ASARI Dokubo because we must bring him down, Ndigbo must drag it with Asari he must understand that Igbo people are not cowards in the world. Asari Dokubo is too small for what Igbo can do, Asari Dokubo is almost dying and Ndijaw should not blame us for dealing with him, we hope you see how Asari Dokubo is insulting Ndigbo Asari Dokubo has no father talk of did business with Igbo man, Ijaw nation has great men, not Asari Dokubo father if he has a father because we knew that he is a battered.

Asari Dokubo must understand that though Ndigbo can be gentle, it is definitely not cowardice. A lion that walks into a jungle and parades himself as the king of that jungle should remember that there were other lions in the same jungle before he arrived. Asari Dokubo, the pig in the creek, your public mocking and bragging for killing Ndigbo shall have consequences.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo

The task of building a modern, prosperous and progressive state is never a one-man adventure. There has to be an aggregation of concerted efforts by diverse stakeholders. Quality, inspiring leadership driven by sublime vision is imperative, and so also is a supportive citizenry with distinctive contributions. With the foregoing in mind, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, was recently in Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital, to engage Ndi Anambra residents there in a Townhall Meeting. The venue of the Townhall meeting was filled up to the brim and graced by key Ndi-Anambra businessmen and women as well as some members of the State Executive Council.

For Governor Soludo, this wasn’t a jamboree but a serious business. The mission was simple and unambiguous. He came to Lagos to seek partners in progress in the quest to build a prosperous, livable and secured Anambra State that all can be proud of. At least, if it is true that heavens help those who first help themselves, Anambra’s own sons and daughters must be sought out first as investors to join hands with the governor in the task of state building. Beyond political pandering, Governor Soludo is a leader in a hurry to transform Anambra State for good and leave it better than he met it. He has no luxury of time to waste. So, he would stop at nothing to enlist support wherever it could be found. After all, he presides over a state bursting with immense potential, yearning to be unleashed for greatness. This has spurred the governor to be relentless over a year of coming to the office to lay a solid foundation that will turn the state into Africa’s axis of sustainable prosperity and a livable and prosperous homeland.

From the onset, the governor’s strategy of priming the state for the serious business of development and investment has been hinged on critical policy pillars of Security, Law and Order; Infrastructure and Economic Transformation; Human Capital and Social Agenda; Governance and Value System; and Sustainable Environment. In all these key areas, sundry seminal achievements have been recorded. For instance, the Soludo administration has restored law and order with profound judicial reforms, as well as drastically reduced the menace of insecurity with the security architecture put in place in collaboration with the State’s joint security forces. To boost economic transformation, over 300 kilometres of roads are in various stages of completion across the state, with more to come. Also, there is a functioning MOU with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company for a 24hrs supply of electricity in the state, just as those who are interested in setting up Independent Power Plants in the state are also welcome to do so.

On transportation, traffic chaos in urban centres is being straightened out, while the government is also working towards the introduction of rail services, both light and sky rails. In health and education, copious human capital investments have been made with the recent employment of 5,000 teachers and over 300 medical personnel to end the pathetic eras of schools without teachers and hospitals without doctors and nurses. Food security is also getting a boost with the new regenerative agriculture practices and seedling distributions of Coconut and palm oil across the entire state to boost the people’s economic status and reduce poverty. The governance system in Anambra has been reformed with the civil service, public sector service and IGR now being done in line with best practices. Urban renewal efforts are ongoing in the key cities of Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi, while the twin menace of gully erosion and flooding in the state is being kept under control.

A lot more has been achieved that space here won’t allow, but Governor Soludo now has his eyes fixed on impacting the future of Anambra State even far better than ever. So, in the next 33 months, the administration will be on a syndicated acceleration mode along its five pivotal policy pillars. Generally, the governor promised that there will be concerted efforts at improving the ease of doing business in Anambra State through reinforcement of the Anambra Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA) as a one-stop investment centre for enquiries, investment advisory, information on regulations and so on. The land will be readily available through the industrial cities that are being initiated at the moment, as long as interested persons fulfil the expected requirements. Also, all infrastructure modernization initiatives will be sustained and accelerated, as the state government will work with the Federal Government and other South East governments for the development of functional Southeast seaport and gas pipeline infrastructure for the Southeast.

In the area of law, order and security, the Soludo government will be deepening the security architecture and partnering with the judiciary and legislature for reviewing of laws and speedy dispensation of justice. In terms of infrastructure for economic transformation, there will be aggressive construction of at least additional 100km of roads across the state and intensification of more efficient mass transportation by developing inter-city and intra-city transport systems, including water transport and sky train. Of course, developmental work will also continue faster at the state airport. The government will be establishing more industrial cities and export processing zones along with export emporiums, warehouses and the largest shopping mall in Africa. The provision of 24-hour electricity supply to at least four major cities such as Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia will be a priority, along with better urban water schemes to guarantee water supply to Awka, Onitsha and Obizi.

As part of its lofty ambitions to build Anambra State as a modern, smart and connected city-state, the government will also be mainstreaming and developing the Solution Innovation District as our own Silicon Valley with the mantra of technology everywhere towards democratising digital skills. What is more, in order to make the state the ultimate destination for residents and visitors alike, the new Awka Fun City, Anambra Country Club, Awka and Agulu Leisure Park Phase One will be built in the near future. Human capital and social agenda development will get more critical attention. There will be upgrading of infrastructure in schools and hospitals as well as recruitment of specialized teachers. The government will be launching and implementing a Ward-based Cooperative Intervention Programme, Continuous Youth Skills Enhancement/Empowerment alongside mainstreaming sports as an economy.

Of course, the environment will not be left out of the Soludo administration’s future accelerated impact. There will be continued greater urban regeneration and modernisation of major cities such as Ekwulobia, Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and others with millions of tree planting and other renewal initiatives that will make Anambra State the cleanest and most planned city in Nigeria. Chaotic, filthy shanties will be transformed into slick beauties, and new enchanting spectacles will be made out of Ochanja Roundabout Water Fountain, Ekwueme Square, Amansea Roundabout, Creek Road/Zik Road/Port Harcourt Road, Awka Road at Borromeo, and Club Road, among others. Now, with all the solid foundations laid for an enabling environment and many more planned accelerated developmental milestones to come in the next 33 months, Anambra State is loading and ready for business, with many investment options open to all.

Governor Soludo’s strident clarion call from the recent Townhall Meeting in Lagos is going out to all Ndi Anambra in Diaspora. From Lagos to Abuja, Ibadan to Kano, Port Harco Johannesburg, London to New York, Dubai to Hong Kong, and everywhere in the world, it is time to answer the urgent, sacred call: think home, come home and invest in your homeland. North, south, east or West, the charity would always begin at home. And at this sensitive time when Ndigbo is facing certain challenges in their various host communities of residence and business, it is in the best interest of Ndi Anambra to imbibe the ‘homeland consciousness’ and invest in their own roots. It is not enough to only come home for Christmas/New Year festivities, burials and weddings. As Governor Soludo rightly emphasized at the Townhall Meeting, there is a critical need to change Anambra State from being a departure lounge to a destination. Indeed, Anambra State sons and daughters are most enterprising and can be found virtually everywhere in Nigeria and the world, investing in their host economies.

But when push comes to shove, will Ndi Anambra have a livable and prosperous homeland to fall back upon? The sum of it all is that Anambra State today stands at the precipice of greatness, with Governor Charles Soludo leading the charge towards a prosperous and secure future. His over one year in office has already laid a solid foundation for development, and his visionary plans for the future promise even greater achievements ahead. But to fully realize the potential of Anambra State, the collective efforts of its indigenes, both at home and abroad, are crucial. Therefore, the time is ripe for Ndi Anambra to channel their expertise, resources, taxes and entrepreneurial spirit towards the prosperity of Anambra State as they have done in their current host societies. Together, all hands must be on the plough with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to pave the way for a prosperous and secure state that future generations will be proud of. Indeed, the Solution is here and Anambra will continue to win!
