IKENGA FLOORS UZODIMMA AGAIN, AS THE CHIEF MAGISTRATE OBEYS A COURT ORDER BARRING FURTHER HEARING ON THE MATTER, AND STRIKES OUT CHINASA NWANERI'S FRIVOLOUS SUIT AS LAWYERS DESCRIBE THE SUIT AS FRIVOLOUS AND A BACKHAND ATTEMPT TO COVER UP OMUMA MAGIC.

While Governor Uzodimma and his sadistic team have not hidden their happiness over the invidious and apparently politically motivated attack on the residence of the opposition spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, the young political activist and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for Ideato Federal Constituency has continued to show that the law is an effective weapon against despots, as he recorded yet another major victory at the Magistrate Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suit at the Magistrate Court was obviously Governor Uzodimma’s only window to save his face after a series of embarrassing defeats at the hands of the Akokwa-born political activist. However, the eminent Magistrate has refused to allow himself to be stampeded into giving any form of legitimacy to the thuggish adventures of half-educated and tactless power drunkards, even though there were allegations that bags of money were set ready with huge promises placed on the table for the Magistrate to turn the law on its head. This could be why Governor Uzodimma’s SA on ‘Special Duties’, Chinasa Nwaneri was boasting to anyone who cares to listen that he was certain of jailing Ikenga Ugochinyere.

Hon. Magistrate Umah Isah Dodo, while delivering a short ruling earlier today agreed with the submission of Ikenga Ugochinyere’s legal team that the clear implication of an earlier order by an FCT High Court on the matter is that he should stay proceedings on the matter. He also informed the counsels to both parties that his court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter. He, therefore, struck off the matter.

The Magistrate’s earlier threat to order the arrest of Ikenga Ugochinyere was the loudest bragging point for Governor Uzodimma and his tactless team of opportunistic electoral mavericks.

Efforts by J. C. Nwosu, counsel to Mr Nwaneri to misdirect the Court that it can continue the hearing were opposed by Ikenga’s lawyers who succeeded in convincing the Court on the lawful thing to do which is to obey the pendency of the matter in the High Court and stop its own hearing.

Reacting to the ruling, eminent lawyers from across Nigeria commended the honourable Magistrate for not allowing himself to be used by anti-democratic agents to gag the activist or divert attention from the expositions regarding the alleged involvement of Governor Uzodimma and his agents in efforts to manipulate the Voters Register in Imo State, especially, in Omuma, where the governor, in collusion with some people, allegedly imported names and photographs of dead, non-existent and untraceable individuals to inflate the Imo State Voters Register with an aim to subvert the wills of Imo people during the 2023 general elections and subsequent elections in the State. The lawyers praised Ikenga Ugochinyere for being a courageous pro-democracy and good governance campaigner who has earned his feathers in the Nigerian political system through a dint of hard work and creativity accentuated by courage.

Authority Stealing: Atiku, Tinubu Should Step Down

0
The Presidential Candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in war of words with The PDP Presidential Candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
The Presidential Candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in war of words with The PDP Presidential Candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

God bless the soul of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. In 1980, the legendary Nigerian musician released one of his hit songs, “Authority Stealing”. The lyrics of the song go like this: “You be thief (I no be thief); You be rogue (I no be rogue); You dey steal (I no dey steal); You be robber (I no be robber); You be armed robber (No be armed robber)…”

There is no better way to describe the dogfight between the presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. These two old men want us to vote for them in the presidential election coming up on February 25, 2023. But from the way they have disgraced each other, one wonders what they are still doing in the race.

Like Fela, they have been shouting, “Catch am, catch am! Thief, thief, thief…!” Tinubu fired the first salvo. In a press conference on January 16, 2023, his campaign spokesperson, Mr Festus Keyamo, said Atiku was involved in money laundering, criminal breach of trust, criminal misappropriation, conspiracy and breach of code of conduct for public officers. He petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to arrest Atiku for these corruption allegations within 72 hours.

Keyamo noted, “Nigerians have been in shock over the public revelations of a whistleblower, Mr Michael Achimugu, who has provided the nation with evidence of letters of appointment by Atiku Abubakar, e-mails, documents, audio clips, sworn affidavit and his direct oral evidence as to how Atiku, who happens to be the presidential candidate of the PDP, during his tenure as Vice-President of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, colluded with his then boss, ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, to fleece the country and steal public funds using what he termed as ‘Special Purpose Vehicles’.” The SPVs, Keyamo alleged, were companies which Atiku registered upon assumption of office as the VP. The purpose, he added, was to divert government contracts to those companies as ‘consultants’ and through the companies, siphon money which they would use to fund the PDP, their private businesses and family activities.

Keyamo, who is Minister of State for Labour and Employment, vowed to go to court if the anti-graft agencies failed to act on his petition. True to his threat, he went to the Federal High Court in Abuja a few days ago. He prayed to the court, among others, for an order to compel the EFCC, ICPC and CCB to arrest, investigate and prosecute Atiku if found wanting. He also prayed the court to compel Atiku to submit himself to the EFCC, ICPC and CCB for a thorough investigation in connection with information available to him in respect of a certain bank account belonging to a company called Marine Float and other accounts of two undisclosed companies.

Atiku did not waste time responding. His campaign spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, made sundry counter-allegations against Tinubu and the APC. He made reference to the formation of a uniformed squad, Jagaban Army, by the APC and asserted that it was a treasonable act and that Tinubu should be arrested and questioned. The Jagaban Army, which he called ‘Jagabandits’, was allegedly set up to disrupt the 2023 general elections and raid polling units for votes on behalf of Tinubu. According to him, it is a direct affront to the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, as well as an assault on the sovereignty of Nigeria.

He added that Tinubu had a litany of confirmed legal impediments on very grave issues such as trafficking in narcotics and taking proceeds of narcotics. “In the recent case revealed in the United States of America, it is on record that the APC presidential candidate forfeited the sum of $460,000, which was confirmed and found to be proceeds of trafficking in narcotics, an international crime for which Nigeria, being a signatory to the international convention on trafficking in narcotics, is obliged to enforce. The effect of the conviction and forfeiture of the sum of $460,000 by Asiwaju Tinubu confirms that he is ineligible and not qualified to contest for the office of the president of Nigeria, as required by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” he averred.

Later in another press conference on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, the PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) vowed to furnish Nigerians with the compendium of Tinubu’s alleged corrupt activities. Ologbondiyan, who addressed the conference, said, it’s now in the public domain how Alpha Beta, which had for over 20 years allegedly held the exclusive rights to collect taxes in Lagos State in return for a commission under very shady arrangements, reportedly siphoned billions of naira belonging to Lagos State.

So far, the only major allegation against the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, is that he is stingy. Obi has continued to move around the country telling Nigerians how he intends to rescue the country from the myriad of problems besetting it. Recently, he was at Chatham House in London.  It was a brilliant outing where he answered all questions thrown at him, reeling out statistics to back up his claims. He did not pass the questions to his aides to answer for him as Tinubu did when he earlier appeared at the same Chatham House. He said it was the acute poverty in the country as well as the cumulative effects of leadership failure over the years that were fuelling agitations in Nigeria. As he put it, “When people start seeing justice, fairness, an inclusive government and doing the right thing, all those things will start reversing and that is what Datti and I are discussing.” At the end of his presentation, many Nigerians, who were at the place to listen to him, started chanting, “All we are saying, give us Obi!”

In sane countries, Atiku and Tinubu should have been forced to step down from the presidential race. Can you ever imagine what will be the fate of these candidates if they were to be campaigning in the United States of America? The US system would have ended their ambition one way or the other.

Here in Nigeria, anything goes. Our own brand of politics is transactional and all for selfish interests. That is why many Nigerians today will gladly join Keyamo and Ologbondiyan to say, “Catch am, catch am! Thief, thief, thief…!” Atiku and Tinubu’s dogfight is divine, as there is no better way to dispense with them and rescue Nigeria from an acute leadership deficit. A new Nigeria is still possible.

How Ethnicity will destroy Nigeria

0
ETHNIC GROUPS IN NIGERIA
ETHNIC GROUPS IN NIGERIA

WHO will rescue Nigeria from the clutch of ethnic venom that is gradually but steadily being secreted by ethnic nationalists through their actions and behavioural disposition? I have opted to refrain from specific examples in this write-up to water down envisaged reactions from those who may feel offended, but I have also left sufficient allusion for easy mental judgement.

There is no singular factor today in Nigeria that threatens the corporate existence of Nigeria more than ethnicism. It breeds all forms of vices in the Nigerian space. Distrust, animosity, corruption, nepotism, deception, and prejudices, among others, are offshoots of ethnicism. Ethnicism evokes rivalry, unhealthy competition, acrimony, and even envy among ethnic groups. Indeed, it has become a Frankenstein monster in Nigeria, and if those at the helm of national affairs do not begin a re-orientation process aimed at changing the demeanour of the average Nigerian, the country may sooner than later be destroyed by the raging impact of ethnicism.

There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, and of these, the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo are the three major tribes, which I will call the Big Three. The size and share numbers of these groups account for their dominance and control of politics, bureaucracy and economy in Nigeria, leaving the remaining smaller groups with weak numerical strength to play at the periphery level.

Even where these ethnic minorities are positioned to play at the national level, they are at the mercy and whims of these three major tribes who, oftentimes, exert domineering influence, leaving the minorities with little or no window for independent considerations.

Therefore, to a larger extent, what the Big Three do with their style of political, bureaucratic and economic pursuit, has a way of shaping and influencing the values and administrative process of the country. Today, it is seemingly difficult to conduct free and credible elections and censuses in Nigeria are a reflection of the desperation of the three major ethnic groups to dominate the political process and allocation of the country’s resources.

Implicitly, the quest for control of political, bureaucratic and economic power by these three major groups is the origin and primary reason for ethnicism in Nigeria. In other words, ethnicism, as it has come to be known, is the creation of the Big Three in their efforts to control the country’s political power and resources.

Perhaps, the only time the Big Three work in unison is when their common interest, namely the oil resource, is threatened. This played out during the National Political Reform Conference, NPRC, instituted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 2005 where they opposed the demand for an increase in the derivation principle from 13 to 25 percent.

This was roundly resisted, obviously for selfish reasons not unconnected with fears of likely reduction in oil proceeds to be shared. This also accounts for why there has been consistent opposition to agitation for resource control by the Niger Delta people.

The oil wealth will continue to be at the centre of ethnic supremacy contests among the three ethnic groups, which is further worsened by the absence of viable natural mineral resources in their domains. Groundnuts, cocoa and palm oil have diminished in value, unable to attract basic foreign exchange, making oil the only viable source of foreign exchange in Nigeria; thus, their aggressive disposition for control of oil resources.

The formation of ethnic associations like Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Ohanaeze and Afenifere is part of their agenda for control of political power and the soul of Nigeria. Political leaders in these regions use these ethnic associations to drive their ethnic agenda under the guise of cultural associations. In practical terms, these groups have no agenda for the promotion of their ethnic cultures.

Unwittingly, the seed they planted in their struggle for control of power at the national public space has now sprouted and spread to private and local levels, leading to disequilibrium in allegiance to national and ethnic matters.

People now identify with their ethnic groupings first before Nigeria. In other words, there is open allegiance and display of affinity to ethnic grouping than national patriotism. Exacerbated by the low political culture in Nigeria, the country no longer inspires hope due to the fierce ethnic rivalry among the three major ethnic groups.

Once a President from an ethnic bloc is in power, members of his ethnic group see it as their turn to dominate the political and economic spaces as well as determination of the allocation of resources. Government policies and appointments are screwed to further the interest of the President’s tribe.

National interest is subordinated to ethnic interest. This is reflected in key national appointments and the majority of members of the kitchen cabinet are drawn from the President’s ethnic base, a reflection of the premium of trust he places on his ethnic nationalities.

As part of ethnic dominion, these major ethnic groups encourage their indigenes to openly speak their indigenous language in public places like offices, notwithstanding the presence of persons from outside their ethnic domain who do not understand their language. This is done brazenly in government offices, but this has also been extended to the private sector and even the multinational companies where they have a significant presence.

Speaking of indigenous language in public places is one of the centrifugal forces working against Nigeria, as it shows clearly that we are not one as a country. If you must speak your local dialect, do so in private and when you are with your co-ethnic nationals. But to speak it in the presence of other Nigerians who do not understand the language is an indication of arrogance and disdain for mutual respect.

This is also gradually being imbibed by some of the minority ethnic groups, portending grave danger. Interestingly, this attitude has also now been extended to places of worship and business frontiers. Some worship centres are perceived to belong to some ethnic groups as well as businesses, including banks, due to ownership/management composition, leadership posture and style of administration.

No wonder some time ago, ethnic colouration was added to what was supposed to be a purely business transaction between an individual and a bank, with some members of the individual ethnic group canvassing and encouraging others from the same ethnic group to close their accounts with the bank. Everything is now seen from the perspective of ethnicism.

Music and newspapers are not spared, as there is apparent discrimination in patronage. Some people have to look at the bottom of a newspaper masthead to know the promoters before patronage. Once the names are dominated by a particular ethnic group, the paper is branded a regional paper, no matter the quality of its content.

Even music that is considered a universal language is also suffering from quarantine engendered by ethnicism in Nigeria. No matter how nice the lyrical and rhythmic melodies of indigenous music are, patronage is overwhelmed by ethnic preference. Ironically, we can dance to Swahili and Zulu music in faraway South Africa without the knowledge of the language.

Nigeria is haemorrhaging from the prick of ethnicism. The intervention schemes established to promote national integration and unity in the country, namely, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Unity schools (federal government colleges) and representative bureaucracy (federal character policy) have not been able to achieve their objectives due to ethnicism.

The seeming indifference to ethnic nationalism in Nigeria by successive administrations is in fact a roadmap for how Nigeria will be destroyed. Until government initiates a process that will change the perception of the people towards national patriotism as against the current ethnic nationalism, the country’s hope of achieving nationhood will be a mirage.

In one of my books, entitled, Nigeria on the Precipice: Issues, Options and Solutions, I have argued that rather than foster unity, the NYSC has become an albatross, creating awareness of the deep animosity, hushed segregation and incompatible cultural differences existing in the country. Indeed, it is becoming an agent of disunity in the country.

As a way out, the government should begin by outlawing the speaking of ethnic languages in public places and abolishing ethnic associations in the country. This should also be followed by discontinuing the practice of reflecting on the state of origin and local government areas in public documents. This way, the government would have proved that it is more serious about achieving one united nation than the multiple ethnic nations in Nigeria.

NO, YOU ARE WRONG, BUHARI HASN’T DISAPPOINTED

0
President Muhammadu-Buhari of Nigeria
President Muhammadu-Buhari of Nigeria

Quite often, humans lie to themselves but even more often, they push their own lie to the point where they forget it’s a lie and start believing it’s the truth.

Such is exactly the situation with some Nigerians who voted for the current President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 but are now regaling the world with tales of how the lanky ex-soldier disappointed them after securing their votes. The people peddling this narrative sound so believable to the point that one would be forgiven to think Buhari was such an excellent achiever with a good track record but suddenly changed after being voted in as President in 2015

Truth is, Buhari didn’t change. He has always been who he has always been: “A specialist in failure” (apologies to Jose Mourinho).

There is absolutely nothing the President is doing today in office that he didn’t do during his short stint as head of state between 1983-85 or show clear signs of doing in the run-up to the 2011 and 2015 general elections. Talk about ethnoreligious bigotry, nepotism, lack of respect for due process and democratic processes and procedures, lack of respect for human lives, love for terrorists who are of his religion and region, a culture of turning a blind eye to corruption when the perpetrators are his friends, cluelessness and general lack of capacity to perform etc. But in fairness to him, he has always been quite transparent about who he is. It is the people who supported him who invented so many lies, myths and legends just to sell him. So any adult Nigerian who claims not to know that Buhari would turn out this way is lying to him/herself because there was absolutely nothing about the President either in 1984-85 or before the 2011-2015 Poll to suggest to any reasonable fellow that this man was qualified to head even a village Umunna (kinsmen) meeting.

Let’s look at a few of Buhari’s 1984-85 and pre-2011 and 2015 records:

December 31st, 1983, he (Buhari) demonstrated his disdain for democracy and due process when he overthrew the first democratically elected government headed by the late Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme. By that singular act of treason against the Nigerian people, Buhari set the country backwards. During that same period, he ‘won’ a ‘World Championship’ in ethnoreligious bigotry when he locked the vice President late Ekwueme -an Igbo Christian – in Kirikiri prison while President Shagari, a Fulani Muslim like himself, he kept in a comfortable government apartment in the name of house arrest. TODAY, HAS HE BEEN DISAPPOINTED IN THE ETHNO-RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY DEPARTMENT?

As head of state, Buhari enacted the atrocious “Decree 4” which meant journalists could be jailed for running a story he (Buhari) considered embarrassing to his government EVEN IF THE STORY WAS TRUE. Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor were jailed under this decree.

The worst level of hardship, gross human rights violations and recession were recorded under him back then. I believe there are people who lived through that period who are still alive today and can testify to this. Yet, even with that loaded gun and a suspended constitution (absolute power) plus the gift of young age, Buhari failed woefully. Anyone who can name just one VERIFIABLE ACHIEVEMENT to his name will get an instant cash transfer of 50,000 from me. Just one achievement, not two.

So those who are accusing him of disappointing them, on what grounds did they base the expectations that made them believe he has now disappointed them? What exactly did Buhari do that make reasonable people think he was capable of transforming a 2015 Nigeria?

Even while he was begging us to vote and at a time the Boko Haram Islamist terrorist group was bombing Nigerians, Buhari publicly defended the terrorist group and described any attack on them as an attack on the North. WHY SHOULD ANYONE NOW FEEL DISAPPOINTED THAT THE SAME BUHARI HAS TODAY EMPOWERED RATHER THAN DEGRADED THE SAME BOKO HARAM WITH OUR SOLDIERS BEING KILLED IN THEIR THOUSAND BY THE TERRORISTS AND BURIED IN MASS GRAVES BY THE ARMY according to Wall Street Journal?

Was it not the same Buhari who stormed govt house in Ibadan on October 13th 2010 with Arewa Consultative Forum members to ask the then governor of Oyo state, Lam Adesina of blessed memory “Why Are Your People Killing My People?” His people being the Fulani herdsmen locked in violent confrontations with indigenous Oyo people whom Buhari referred to as Adesina’s people? So why should anyone suddenly start expecting Buhari to see all Nigerians as one against “my people versus the other people?” Why should anyone feel disappointed that the same Buhari is today providing “his people” (the herdsmen) with state-sponsored impunity to slaughter other Nigerians and dispossess them of their ancestral land????

The same Buhari, long before becoming President, publicly declared that his Childhood friend and former boss, the late Sani Abacha under whom he served, didn’t steal a dime of Nigerian money even when he’s today receiving billions of these looted monies. SURELY, YOU DON’T NEED A CERTAIN CHARLES OGBU TO TELL YOU THAT A MAN WHO NOT ONLY SERVED A CERTIFIED CROOK LIKE ABACHA BUT PUBLICLY DEFENDED HIM MUST BE HEAVILY CORRUPT HIMSELF AND NOT CAPABLE OF FIGHTING CORRUPTION?? So why the surprise that he is dining and wining with corrupt individuals and even defending and raising the hands of the Gandujes of this world??

In 2011, after contesting and losing the election, Buhari instigated his minions into killing thousands of innocent Nigerians including youth corps members. Even when the then government of Jonathan pleaded with him to just issue a public statement condemning the post-election violence which would have been understood by his minions as a “cease fire” order, Buhari refused. And that was an election he contested under the platform of a little known now defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) which had only one state governor then (ex-governor Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa). How is it a disappointment that the same Buhari is busy today picking his teeth and showing us the photo while millions are being killed by terrorists, bandits and kidnappers some of whom are being clearly aided by the Army he commands as evidenced in the Taraba incident of 6th August 2019 where soldiers murdered policemen just to help an arrested kidnap kingpin escape and the criminal act publicly defended by the Nigerian Army through its spokesman?? Was it not Buhari who put our name in the Guinness book of record as an international kidnapper when he tried abducting Umaru Dikko from the UK?

So I ask again, ex-Buharists who continue to accuse Buhari of disappointing them, how exactly did the President disappoint you kwanu?? How?  I’m asking because my memory is getting quite rusty so it’s possible I forgot.

It’s not like he (Buhari) was such an Orator that one could plead being swept off his feet by his powerful speech during the campaign. He didn’t even take part in the debate which means you can’t claim his response to National issues during the debate made you think he could perform. Even ordinary to improve himself all through the over 3 decades he was out of power, Buhari didn’t. So you can’t really say you were fooled by his academic qualification. He established no business aside from his cows which is more like a tradition for a Fulani man. So you cannot say his business ingenuity made you think he would provide jobs for Nigerians. He wrote no book, delivered no lecture and made absolutely no contribution to society. All he did was wait for four years, come out to contest, lose the election, instigate his minions to spill blood in post-election violence, cry, go home and wait for another four years.

So again, I ask, what qualities did Buhari exhibit either in 1984-85 or during any of his presidential campaigns that could have convinced anyone he was capable of leading a 21st century multi-ethnic and multi-religious and cultural State like ours and how exactly has he deviated from those qualities that justify those who supported him in 2015 and even in 2019 to suddenly start accusing him of disappointing them???

Are Nigerian Christians On A Wild Goose Chase!

0
National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF)
National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF)

It is very disturbing to observe the ease with which Nigerian elites, particularly the Christians, are dribbled and sent on wild goose chases on very sensitive national issues. There is the need therefore to re-state the core issues that are causing problems in Nigeria and what constitutes the solution. At this rate, those who have constituted themselves into enemies of Nigeria are having cheap victory.

Today, the following unpalatable evils define Nigeria as a country: corruption and sleaze at all levels, insecurity (bloodshed, sudden death, kidnapping, raping, etc), economic recession, broken down infrastructure, dysfunctional political system, fractured social relationships, ethnic suspicion and rivalry, one could go on and on. Two questions come to our mind:

1.      What is the cause of the problem?

2.      Who is managing the public discourse?

Let it be made clear for all that the problem of Nigeria is NOT one of the following:

a.      It is not Christians versus Muslims or Muslims versus Christians.

b.      It is not South versus North or North versus South

c.       It is not PDP versus APC or APC versus PDP

d.      It is not Military versus Civilians or Civilians versus Military

e.      It is not rich versus poor or masses versus the rich

f.      It is not poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, or desert encroachment

Someone may quip, “So there is no threat of Islamization, after all?” There is an Islamization agenda and it is a serious threat. What needs to be understood is what constitutes the threat and this is discernible in the difference between a Muslim and an Islamist. A Muslim practices Islam as a religion while an Islamist manipulates Islam as a political ideology. This is the reason Islamism is referred to as “political Islam.” Islamism is a conscious attempt to manipulate religion as a tool for political and cultural domination. While Islam is a religion, Islamism, otherwise called “political Islam”, “is a set of ideologies that holds that Islam is not only a religion but a political system”. As a political system, Islamists insist that Islam is meant to dominate the environment in which it is practised. In a sharply divergent society like Nigeria, any attempt to implement the principles of Islamism portends great danger to the nation. It is this Islamist political ideology that is driving the crisis in Nigeria.

The problem of Nigeria is IDEOLOGICAL. It is simply DEMOCRACY versus SHARIA. This is the problem Nigerians need to solve. Nigeria is a Democratic country under the invasion of Sharia ideology. This is the core problem that must be solved and every crisis will evaporate.

Every country in the world derives its identity and system of Governance from its National Ideology. Countries with Sharia ideology have a system of Governance and way of life different from countries with Communist ideology which is also different from countries with Democratic ideology and so on. No country has two conflicting ideologies except, of course, Nigeria.

The 1999 Constitution is a compendium of dual conflicting ideologies pulling the country in two opposing directions. Unless this conflict is resolved, Nigeria will remain in turmoil because Democracy and Sharia ideologies are antithetical to each other. The entire crisis in the country, summed up as corruption, mediocrity, insecurity and ethnicity are consequences of the dual conflicting ideologies plaguing Nigeria.

The crisis commenced before Independence and was solidified under the Military regime when most of the Military Heads of State were Muslims from the North. During the various Conferences leading to Independence, the impression was created that ALL Nigerians wanted Democracy. Unknowingly to the other sections of the country, some Northern Muslims preferred a system of governance of which Islamic Law is a major ingredient. Relentlessly, they pursued this goal until they were able to smuggle Nigeria into OIC in 1986 and brought Islamic Law and Jurisprudence into the 1999 Constitution. Invariable, a country under Common Law became a country under Common Law and Sharia. In the ensuing conflict, one of the two has to give way because both cannot co-exist. That is the crisis going on now.

In recent times, skilful spin-masters have been manipulating public discourse with the intention of distracting attention from the real issues. While Nigerians keep pursuing shadows, they dig into their preferred ideology. Let us recap some of those distractions. A very observant person listed the following:

1.      From grazing route to grazing reserve

2.      From grazing reserve to grazing colony

3.      From grazing colony to ranching

4.      From ranching to importation of grass from Brazil for cattle

5.      From the importation of grass to Fulani Radio

6.      From Fulani Radio to N100 billion paid to Miyetti Allah

7.      From N100 billion to RUGA

8.      From RUGA to e-registration

9.      From e-registration to Military ranching

10.  From Military ranching to, … what next?

The attention of Nigerians is constantly kept focused on symptoms while the real disease is eating away at the body. And what is the real disease? It is a Conflict of ideologies. If you notice, few people are talking about that.

Since the inception of the National Christian Elders Forum, the NCEF has been telling Nigerians that the problem of the country is the Conflict of Ideologies. On 17th March 2016, NCEF addressed a Press Conference with a paper titled “CONFLICT OF IDEOLOGIES AS THE GREATEST OBSTACLES TO PEACE, UNITY, AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA.” Other papers have been presented by the NCEF on this issue but it would appear that Christian elites are difficult to persuade with the truth.

While attention is focused on ranching and RUGA, consider what has been done to Nigeria, a supposedly a Common Law country:

1.      Islamists (Sharia sponsors) have taken over the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, and Security

2.      The Common Law position of Nigeria has given way to Sharia Law with the CJN as Sharia Lawyer,

3.      Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the country is Sharia Lawyer,

4.      Head of Law School is Sharia Lawyer,

5.      The 9th Assembly has Legislators already mooting suggestions of amending the Constitution to provide for life Presidency. (This is Sharia, not Democracy.)

6.      The Federal Character Principle, one of the pillars of justice, equity and fairness in the Constitution has been subverted. This is Sharia.

7.      The 2019 Election is a classical example of Sharia in action. It was not a Democratic contest.

The Islamists have made great strides in their goal to transmute Nigeria into an Islamic Sultanate since all the major structures of Governance are under their control. They have been greatly helped by the “Islamist collaborators”, the compromising leaders in the Church and the traitors amongst ethnic leaders, mostly politicians and traditional rulers. These treacherous collaborators hunt with the hounds and run with the hare.

In an earlier paper on this subject, it was stated, “Nigerian’s political history is conflict-ridden due to untiring efforts to supplant the tested and acceptable liberal democratic ideals with the Sharia, which the British Colonial powers had rejected because of its restrictive, sectional, discriminatory and subjective theocratic bias; and the fact that it could not pass the “REPUGNANCY TEST”. Our national development has been hampered by the institutionalization of conflict through the unilateral infusion of the Sharia into the 1999 Constitution under the Islamic-biased military dictatorship, as against the restrictive “Islamic personal law”, which had been adopted and applied by consensus since independence and national development.”

One is mystified by the outcry against RUGA in recent times as if RUGA is the problem. There is no difference between RUGA and Grazing Reserve, the difference is only in nomenclature. If Christians had devoted half the energy expended on combating RUGA on the real solutions, more progress would have been made for the country. Now that RUGA has been replaced with E-Registration which has also been followed by a proposal for the Military to establish ranches all over the country, what would those fixated on RUGA do now?

There is a need to focus attention on the real issues and avoid distractions. Whoever wants to provide a solution to the crisis in Nigeria should address the conflict between DEMOCRACY and SHARIA. Nigeria is a Democratic country under Common Law and it should remain so.

What are the solutions?

1.      Every Nigerian with understanding should begin to agitate for a new Constitution that is based wholly on Liberal Democracy and the Parliamentary System of Government. This is the ideology agreed upon by the founding fathers of Nigeria and the only ideology that could accommodate all the divergent groups in the country. Nigeria needs NEW Constitution.

2.      Implementation of the Report of the 2014 National Conference as a precursor to restructuring the country.

3.      Establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as the basis for healing, forgiveness and reconciliation of all the divergent groups in the country.

The Willink’s Commission Report of 1958, states as follows:

“The whole structure of the proceedings leading to independence is based on the belief that Nigeria meant to follow the road of liberal democracy and parliamentary government and to base part of the structure on the opposite assumption is to invite the government to do their worst. But if the road is followed (liberal democracy and parliamentary government), votes will count and in the last resort it is voted that will win fair treatment for minorities”

Every energy, advocacy, and intervention should be directed toward these solutions. These are the solutions.

It is time to stop chasing the wild goose.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has his gaze firmly fixed on the Nigerian Presidential seat – Dele Momodu

The APC Presidential candidate in the 2023 Election in piture with Chief, Aare Dele Momodu.

Respected magazine publisher, Dele Momodu in his weekly article writes about the prospects of a Bola Tinubu presidency come 2023,

Fellow Nigerians permit me to say, it is no longer a secret that the former Governor of Lagos State and easily one of the most influential politicians in Africa, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has his gaze firmly fixed on the Nigerian Presidential seat in Abuja. Let me put it more frontally, Tinubu will love to drop the Chieftaincy title, Asiwaju, for that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Who wouldn’t, anyway? I once tried my luck despite not having ten percent of Tinubu’s stupendous resources, extensive networks, public service experience and achievements and so on. I know that some will think it is too early to be talking about a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari given that his second term is barely six months old.

Nevertheless, the political gladiators are already baring their fangs and showing their hands and flapping their wings. It would be silly of anyone to shut their eyes to such developments.

The debate is already raging, as always. We love to talk. Don’t we? That’s our pastime, sadly or joyously. The naysayers are having a field day with a plethora of reasons and questions on why he cannot succeed. What does Tinubu want again? He can’t win! He is not fit enough! He is too tainted and tarnished! The Hausa-Fulani will never give him power.

How can he think he can attain what Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Moshood Abiola failed to get? Why can’t he field one of the people he empowered in the past? Too many questions begging for answers.  I often wonder what exactly the matter is with us we practically groan and grumble over anything and everything.

Someone once wrote that we all have the Abacha traits in us. We are all autocratic and oppressive in nature, the reason Democracy is not working here and may never work in most parts of Africa. We are just too intolerant and too dismissive. But for me and my house, I’m a consummate Democrat. I believe everyone has the right to aspire to any height in life, especially in politics. Political leadership is not the personal property of any person, dynasty or group!

If you ask me, I will tell you, unequivocally,  and repeatedly, that Tinubu is eminently qualified to contest. If you ask me if he is a saint, I will say no. None of us is. Not even Buhari. Not you, not me. Nations are not governed by saints but by performers. That is one of the recurring themes that I regularly propagate in my musings and reflections.

I have no illusions that Tinubu will definitely perform as President of Nigeria if he ever contests and wins. He has a knack for identifying brilliant minds and fertile brains, and the ability to nurture them to greatness. He has demonstrated this repeatedly and almost endlessly. Examples abound without a doubt.

Does Tinubu suffer from excesses and shortcomings? Perhaps, again like all mortals, he does. This does not diminish his greatness. His excesses are mitigated by several strong and positive qualities. He is generous to a fault. He has lifted many souls, old and young, from penury and perdition. He is a classic example of the Good Samaritan. We all have our shortcomings and why should Tinubu be an exception.

Too many unprintable rumours, myths and comments have been circulated in writing and also spoken about him, some bordering on character assassination and unverifiable vilification, but God chooses and anoints those he wants. And no one can challenge God. It is obvious that Tinubu has been richly blessed, despite his apparent foibles. Such is life.

I have followed his trajectory for close to three decades. His story is the stuff of fairy tales. All those who have disparaged, derided, denigrated and despised him have not been able to bring him down, despite their monumental efforts to achieve this. When you think he is supine, broken and out, he rises, like the Black onyx and soars again. I witnessed this, live and direct, during our exile days. Many times, we all felt down and out but Tinubu’s passion and influence re-engineered things and made us redouble our efforts.

The reason is simple. Tinubu has an uncommon audacity. I believe his bravery has taken him beyond his own imagination. A man who has survived too many tribulations like him cannot be an ordinary soul. God must love him dearly and extraordinarily. He has fought many battles that he won, spectacularly. He is naturally smart and adequately fearless. A mutual friend once told a few of us that he is very sure Tinubu would still take the risk even if you say a particular venture will kill him.

He has such kamikaze instincts. You can’t go far in life if you’re too squeamish and Tinubu is living proof that courage conquers all. It is wrong to say Tinubu has no right to run for the Presidency in 2023. Who are those who will run if he does not? How are they better? What qualifies them to run that disqualifies him from running? Yes, I may prefer younger people to take over but many of them we have seen have not justified the noise about “not too young to rule,” by ruling senselessly and recklessly. I’m now convinced that age should not be a deliberate barrier; a track record of achievements should be the priority.

I welcome all those who want to run and believe that they should be allowed to run without hindrance. It is wrong to muzzle the opposition, or even an opponent because any nationalist and patriot will want the best for Nigeria and so long as the people express their preference for that person, he should be given the opportunity. Nigeria has suffered and continues to suffer because Murtala Mohammed, Chief M. K. O. Abiola and, to a lesser extent, Chief Obafemi Awolowo were not allowed to rule Nigeria by the selfish manipulations and evil machinations of incurably selfish and obviously misguided elements.

Let’s now take on the issues I earlier mentioned,  one by one. Those who are petrified, or just being cheeky, that the Hausa/Fulani will never hand over power to the South and, by extension, to Tinubu, and others, really baffle me. Self-doubt is one of the biggest afflictions of the Southerners. Too many people suffer from an inferiority complex. They have resigned themselves to slavery and servitude, voluntarily, in their own country.

This is one of the reasons the  Tinubu experiment and controversy are ‘sweeting’ me. If Tinubu cannot be supported by the North, despite all he did for Muhammadu Buhari to become President, after chasing the shadows for three record times, then there is no hope for Nigeria. In any event, I must stress that it is an insult to other parts of Northern Nigeria to suggest that there is a monolithic and homogenous North. We all know that is far from the truth.

There are diverse and disparate tribes in the Middle belt.  Even within the core north, there are several minority tribes who do not share the same aspirations as their more visible and vociferous neighbours. We must discourage the notion of master-servant relationships in this country. We must promote unity and uphold the rights of every Nigerian citizen. Personally, I don’t care where the next President comes from, North, East, South or West. All aspirants are welcome. The more, the merrier.

That is why I’m not for zoning, in any form. I want aspirants to contest on their disastrous or meritorious records. Let the electorates be the judges. But to say someone is automatically disqualified on account of ethnicity, or even religion is so unfortunate and so not right and definitely unacceptable,  at this time and age. It is one of the reasons that we have been robbed of stellar leaders in the past and the present. Are we not tired of this intractable backwardness?

On Awolowo and Abiola, it was same myopia that made some powerful forces to gang up against them. What did the enemies of progress then gain after all? Let’s concede that Awolowo did not win, what of Abiola who was robbed in broad daylight and even paid the supreme price! Who knows if Tinubu will finally cross the bridge and finish the final lap of this marathon? No one knows God’s plans.

Good luck Jonathan never dreamt of being Deputy Governor, talk less of becoming President of Africa’s most populous country. Yemi Osinbajo had resigned himself to Law and Pastoral work but suddenly and unexpectedly became Vice President, almost effortlessly. He was probably home, arms akimbo when he was called and anointed from the blues.

Also, his helicopter crashed one terrible afternoon on his way to some political rallies in Kogi State, yet none of the passengers died. Many have died in less chaotically dangerous circumstances, and not a scratch on these children of God. Was that not a powerful sign and testimony that these are not mere mortals to be rubbished or traduced?

Some contend that Tinubu should not contest but instead allow one of his proteges to run instead. However, it is my belief that such a decision is solely his. It must always be remembered that he had the chance to be Vice-President and could have put his foot down to make the coalition work. On that occasion, for the good of his Party and the Nation, he gave up his dream and ambition and put forward another spectacular candidate, Professor  Yemi Osinbajo, who has not let his mentor down and has shown admirable comportment and grace.

I believe there must therefore be some cogent reasons why he feels the time has come to be the king rather than a Kingmaker in perpetuity. There is nothing wrong with him making such an informed decision. He should be allowed to exercise his franchise and bet on himself again. Tinubu is an enigmatic calculator who knows how to permutate the game and stun his opponents.

Like Buhari, I want to assume that Tinubu had planned this journey for a very long time. All the steps he has taken since 1999 obviously point to this fact.  The kind of political and social machinery that he has built is probably only matched and surpassed by those of great leaders that nurtured and forged our Independence, like the Owelle of Onitsha, Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Odole of Ife, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Moshood Abiola. The rest is in the hands of God.

For me, Tinubu’s ambition is not an impossible mission. He is a master strategist who has acquired the templates of others like Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Chief Moshood Abiola, and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, plus being one of those who ran Buhari’s campaigns, substantially. He knows the Nigerian terrain very well and even his enemies respect him tremendously.

For me, what gives Tinubu pre-eminence over most of the others who are contending for the crown but presently hiding behind one finger is his glittering records and achievements in both the private and public sectors. I really do not care about his past because as a Christian, none of us can judge anyone, and I have ample examples of the possible transformation and transfiguration of human beings, as the Lord pleases. That is a long time ago and gone with the winds.

He has done more than enough to remove that from his narrative. Whatever his background was, he cannot be robbed of his victory and glory perpetually. Yes,  it is clear that he came from very humble beginnings of deprivation and chronic need but he sought to improve himself by seeking the golden fleece. He succeeded in his quest to attain a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.

His success in this regard can be measured by the fact that he was headhunted by top accounting firms like Arthur Andersen and Deloitte, Haskins and Sells. He eventually joined Mobil in Nigeria where he excelled spectacularly and rose to become a top executive in the company. His should thus be a veritable inspiration to the majority of those in similar circumstances today, that anyone can rise up from the pit of hell to any heights, by dint of hard work and uncommon sagacity and determination.

His political career started in 1992. He was elected to the highest legislative house in the Nigerian Senate. When that ill-fated experiment by General Ibrahim Babangida went the way, it was programmed to go, Tinubu fled Nigeria and regrouped with like-minded patriotic Nigerians to form the external wing of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). After the death of General Sani Abacha, Tinubu returned home to contest as Governor of Lagos State and won a convincing victory.

It is Tinubu’s achievements as a two-term Governor of Lagos State that have projected him to the prominent and exalted position that he now occupies in the Nigerian political sphere. He began the systematic and robust increase of the internally generated revenue of Lagos State which his successors have had no choice but to emulate, and sustain incrementally thus making Lagos State one of the richest self-sustaining ‘governments’ in Africa.

His indomitable and indefatigable spirit led him to challenge the Federal Government headlong and succeeded in standing tall as he fought President Olusegun Obasanjo to a standstill. Despite not having access to funding for his local governments, Tinubu single-handedly revived and revamped Local Governments in Lagos State and brought tremendous developments to practically every part of Lagos State.

His other great political prowess is in identifying quality and talented leaders from hitherto political obscurity and foisting them on the people to great effect. I strongly believe that Tinubu should be given a chance on merit when, and if, he eventually proclaims his candidacy. Others will eventually come forth and should also be considered on their merits. As they do, we will have cause to revisit their suitability.

Our country can only gain from such robustly healthy competition. We have a preponderance of brilliant men and women who can take Nigeria to the zenith of greatness but they are usually wasted on the altar of greed and selfishness. What is clear to me is that it is only a matter of time before events begin to unfold.

In the meantime, I can only wish Tinubu all the best in his appointment with destiny.

Power-drunk Wife Of Nigerian Secret Police, DSS Director-General Orders Arrest Of Kano NNPP Gov Candidate, Killing Of His Aide For Filming Assault At Kano Airport

Aisha Bichi, the wife of Yusuf Bichi, the director-general of the State Security Service (SSS), also known as (DSS), has ordered the arrest of Abba Yusuf, the New Nigeria Peoples Party governorship candidate in Kano.

Yusuf was also barred from boarding a Max Air flight from Kano to Abuja on Sunday night. It was gathered that the problem began at the VIP lounge gate of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, when the politician’s convoy allegedly caused traffic congestion, briefly preventing Mrs Bichi’s convoy from entering the controlled area. Sources said the situation angered Mrs Bichi as her security guards started beating up people and hitting vehicles for “disrespecting” her.

According to witnesses, the NNPP candidate later went into the lounge to meet his wife’s friend and complain about the security personnel’s inappropriate behaviour. “No sooner had Abba approached her than she began raining insults on him. Although the state director of service attempted to calm her down, she continued pouring the expletives, saying she would not allow him to be a governor,” an eyewitness told the newspaper.

It was further gathered that the crisis worsened when she sighted a member of the politician’s entourage, Garba Kilo, filming the altercation with his phone. The witness continued: “As she saw Kilo taking a video, she immediately ordered the personnel to kill him, saying ‘kill him, and nothing will happen.’

“She further vowed that she would not allow Abba to board the same flight with her tonight. As she continued shouting, the state director of DSS pleaded with Abba to cancel his trip and go back home.” “As Abba insisted on boarding the flight, a reinforcement of DSS personnel shortly arrived at the airport and cordoned off the lounge building. Some hefty-looking operatives then stormed into the lounge and told Abba that he was under arrest,” the source added.

According to sources, the divisional police officer in charge of the airport later arrived with his subordinates to investigate the incident and take statements from those involved in the clash. “After Abba gave a statement, the DPO went to the left wing of the lounge to take her statement, but she declined, asking ‘do you know who I am? Who are you to even confront me to write a statement?

“The DPO later left without taking her statement,” said the source. It was learnt that the SSS operatives later released Mr Yusuf after the flight took off with the DG’s wife. When contacted, SSS spokesman Peter Afunanya did not respond to an inquiry on the matter at the time of filing this report, just as NNPP candidate Sanusi Dawakintofa could not be reached for comment. Mrs Bichi also reportedly directed DSS operatives in Abuja to beat up her tailor for failing to get her clothes ready on time.

Last year, she also reportedly ordered the service director at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to be fired for allegedly refusing to welcome her.

Are Nigerian Christians The Enemy Of Christianity In Nigeria?

0
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a former Minister of External Affairs and, the Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a former Minister of External Affairs and, the Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

By Bolaji O. Akinyemi.

The falcon is screaming itself out, yet the falconet cannot hear. Justice is judged of her valiant and equity is executed on the street by her own beneficiaries. The centre indeed can no longer hold. The voice of the shepherd is lost on the sheep to the subtle momentarily soothing whisper of the hireling luring it to the slaughter slab.

Deafening the nation is a noise of confusion coming from the church shouting Islamization agenda! Islamization agenda!! Islamization agenda!!!

Of course, this agenda is real but it is not something that noise and empty threats can drown.

Truth must be told this agenda is beyond our country. It’s a drive-by Islamic fundamentalists to have control of Africa, the strategic position, economy and size of Nigeria make her a soft target for the realization of an agenda far from being noble.

In the East African country of Kenya, the Al-Shabaab had their worst hit on that country in 2019 at the Dusit D2 Hotel Complex, with the use of a suicide vest.

In Uganda, ISLAMIC State Central African Province claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Central business district in Kampala.

In the west African country of Burkina Faso, Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State attacks on the country have recorded over 2000 deaths and 1.8 million displaced persons.

This international terror network operation in Africa has triggered the historical terror that predates the territory named Nigeria by her British colonial Master. A result of rivalry between the West and Shua Arabs for territorial control during our colonial days, that is the reason we are where we are. While the West is done in Africa but not dusted, returning home yet tying the apron of the former colonial states to their skirts. This is made obvious by their support for inept leadership succession who are unable to lead our independent states out of dependency on former colonial states. Shua Arabs of course have nowhere to go and have therefore found life in the terror activities of Islamic fundamentalists to fulfil their RUGA (meaning my land in fulfude) dream.

We must speak and write to prick the consciences of the Christian faithful who in their present situation are not better than subjects of traditional rulers of African states who thrive through conspiracy with the colonial masters against their own people. The individual Christian must take his faith and fate in his own hands. Some Pastors today are trading the number of the members and branches of their church for political relevance and dividend with politicians.

If, in spite of your faithfulness to tithes and offerings, your pastor still feels the need to trade out your collective demography for personal gain then something is wrong. Standing with Northern Christians is sacrosanct to our existential continuity as men of faith and of tribes. One statement made at the St Francis-Owo attack is you could be next! Owo in Ondo state is between Benin in Edo State and Osogbo in Osun state, with an average driving distance of an hour. Owo is a driving distance of 4 hours from Lagos. Can your Lagos and my Lagos be the next?

History doesn’t lie, people lost to history are dead while they yet live. Historically, this Fulani ethnic warfare is wrapped under religious garb, the first causalities are the non-Fulani Habe Kings of Hausa states, overthrown by their own people under the quest for practising true Islam which established the present Emirate structure in 1804.

Second, are the Hausas and other indigenous non-Fulani Northerners, especially the Christians, hoodwinked under one North, already subdued.

Third, are the Christian Middle belt deceived under one regional camouflage now being ravaged by herdsmen unchallenged.

The fourth will be the southern Christians lured under a Muslim-Muslim/North-South presidential ticket and this is where we are in 2022.

And the fifth will be the Yoruba Muslim casualties who should be smelling the coffee now before we are all faced with the final onslaught of Muslim – Muslim/North-North tickets in 2027.

In all these battles, the victims are first their foot soldiers who are sent to divide and dislodge their own people before realizing their folly.

The average period of slumber or comatose is 35 years before they wake up if they ever do!

In their deception they are appealing to your liberalism, to say religion doesn’t matter and you are foolishly running with it without putting their perspective in the context of their actions. I love a public statement circulating on this, which I have modified to get home my points.

“YOU say RELIGION does not matter but some people want Hijab to be worn in all public Secondary Schools.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but you cannot sell alcohol in some states in NIGERIA, but the taxes from its sales can build you a Mosque.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter in NIGERIA but we have a Constitution that recognises the CRIMINAL CODE in the South and PENAL CODE  (Sharia law) in the North.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but HISBAH is a religious police backed by law and its officers can arrest a normal Police officer.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but Leah Sharibu was denied freedom because those that negotiated the release of the kidnapped Dapchi school girls were of different RELIGION.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but a Northern Christian is bad for political business.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but enact religious beliefs into our laws. If religious beliefs inspire the laws that govern us, then the influence of RELIGION shouldn’t be downplayed

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but a Christian woman was killed in Abuja because she was preaching close to a Mosque. Her killers are still walking around freely and will vote during the coming elections.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but our government continues to waste the resources of a constitutional “secular state” on sponsorship of pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem every year for political patronage.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter yet churches are set ablaze by those shouting “Allahu Akbar”

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but you cannot build churches in major cities of Northern Nigeria, and when you do it is never going to be without Government approval.

YOU say RELIGION does not matter but when we had a Christian PRESIDENT, our president now, said then, “an attack on Boko Haram was an attack on the NORTH”.

Only two countries in the world today have dealt ruthlessly with terrorism and terrorists, Israel and Egypt. I won’t refer you to the example of Israel, because of the diplomatic biases of this Administration.

Nigerians should go and study what happened in Egypt in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and look out for similarities with the goings-on in their country.

In 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt formed a party, Freedom and Justice Party and used that platform to install President Morsi (an Islamic fundamentalist and member of the Muslim Brotherhood) in 2012. Thankfully, in 2013, the Egyptian military got wind of the game of the Islamists and quickly moved to remove President Morsi. Consequently, the military saved the country from sliding fully into the hands of the fundamentalists.

In February 2013, the Islamists in Nigeria, masquerading as democrats, formed a party, All Progressives Congress, and used that platform to clinch power in 2015. They installed a man who was the grand patron of BH who never hesitated to speak publicly in favour of the terrorists.

Since he had chosen a famous pastor from a majority ethnic group as Vee Pee, ethnic sentiments blinded many within the Vee Pee’s Church family and ethnic group from seeing the agenda of the terrorists. They rejoiced that their brother was the second in command to the new president.

After over seven years in office, we all have seen what the Islamists have done to the Vee Pee’s office and are now set to advance their evil agenda. That’s the reason for the Muslim-Muslim ticket. Regrettably, many citizens still think it’s all about politics and is vigorously discussing the 2023 elections. Some are glad that their ethnic warlord has been named the ruling party candidate.

Sadly, the experiment that failed in Egypt is working in Nigeria because our military is in bed with the terrorists; at least General T.Y Danjuma said so. Since our military has been captured by the Islamists, the onus now lies on the ordinary people to fight and save their country. Unfortunately, not many of them truly know what’s going on. If you refuse to see the similarities between the Egyptian experiment and the politics of 2023 in Nigeria, then you are blind and irredeemable. May God help you!

Peter Obi at Chatham House: Nigeria Must Learn Again to Fly!

0

The articulate and moving speech of the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party for the February 25th election, Mr Peter Obi at the Chatham House in London yesterday, January 16th 2023, evoked sentiments of Nigerians as can be captured in Ofeimun’s poem: “We Must Learn Again to Fly”. From Peter Obi’s physical presence on the stage at the Chatham House to his well-delivered written address and responses to the questions he was asked, all pointed to his mental and physical alertness and preparedness to take on the job of a president. He was quite Presidential!

Obi’s message was clear: “From day one, I will lead from the front”, he said. That promise couldn’t have been needed by Nigerians when we reflect on the current administration in Nigeria which has been run mostly by proxies. Ditto one of the presidential candidates whose appearance at the Chatham House was a global embarrassment when he could not address the questions directed at him but asked his proxies to come to his aid in the guise of teamwork. With Obi-Datti, Nigeria will Learn Again to Fly!

Thumbs up to Neurosurgeon, Dr Tayo Ojo by Nigerians

Nigerians have showered praises on the Neurosurgeon, Dr Tayo Ojo, who performed the brain surgery for popular Nigerian influencer, Dr Chinonso Egemba aka Aproko Doctor. The online health influencer had earlier on Monday opened up about his battle with a brain tumour that needed to be taken out.

Tweeting a photo of the doctor, he said, “It was Dr Tayo Ojo, a neurosurgeon here in Nigeria, that did the surgery. So many people begged me to leave the country and get the surgery done, but something kept me back here because I still had trust in us. We just need more investment in our health sector.”

Netizens have been hailing Dr Ojo and sharing how he saved their lives or those of their relatives. On Twitter, Sucrefashions stated “Same here. I was advised to travel out but my family Doctor insisted that Tayo Ojo is one of the best in Nigeria He did my surgery 6 years ago in LUTH, a very good neurosurgeon”.

Former reality TV star, Leo Da Silva, tweeted, “I know of this man, brilliant and exceptional.” Favourite things tweeted, “Dr Ojo is the angel that saved my life from a brain aneurysm in September 2022 too. Such a kind man. I was already bleeding into my brain before I got to LUTH on 9/9/2022. Here I am, recovering and grateful to be alive. Nigeria has hope if we can support our doctors.”

B Emmanuel tweeted his own encounter with Dr Ojo, saying, “I am a neurofibromatosis patient. He did spine surgery for me too at LUTH. He also assist(ed) Dr Ugboro in doing a skin-grafting surgery on the foot for me. I so much love that man.” Sola Baloo tweeted, “Wow! Same Dr Tayo Ojo did my father’s brain surgery in 2019, and my old man is doing just great.” An Instagram user, Jane Michael, said, “This is the doctor that saved my mum from a brain tumour in LUTH.”

FULL TEXT: MY APPEAL TO ALL NIGERIANS PARTICULARLY YOUNG NIGERIANS

H.E. Chief, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR. Ex-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
H.E. Chief, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR. Ex-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Dear Compatriots and Friends! Happy New Year! May all our national calamities disappear this year!

I am constrained to write this letter to all Nigerians, especially young Nigerians, friends of Nigeria globally as well as our development partners because of the gravity, responsibility and implications of the collective decision Nigerians, both young and old will be made within the next two months. The last seven and a half years have no doubt been eventful and stressful years for many Nigerians. We have moved from frying pan to fire and from the mountain top to the valley.

Our leaders have done their best, but their best had turned out to be not the best for Nigeria and Nigerians at home and abroad. For most Nigerians, it was hell on earth.

Those of us who are alive should thank God for His mercies, brace ourselves for the remaining few months of this administration and pray and work very hard for an immediate better future – a future of liberation, restoration and great hope and expectation. We’ve had campaigners going up and down the country feeding us with what they mean and what they don’t mean, what they understand and what they don’t fully understand, what’s possible and what isn’t possible, what’s realistic and what’s unrealistic, what’s true and what is untrue. I believe that we need not be confused or gullible. Let us be cautious, not to be fooled again.

I have interacted with the major contestants and I find it interesting that, in one form or the other, each of them claims to want to do what I did during my Presidency… and to take Nigeria back to where it was at the height of my Presidency and immediately after. I was pained that most of them do not realise that the Nigeria of today had been dragged down well below Nigeria at the beginning of my Presidency in June 1999.

Although at that time, Nigeria was in very bad shape and was tottering on the verge of collapse and break-up. Even then, Nigeria was not faced with the level of pervasive and mind-numbing insecurity, rudderless leadership, buoyed by mismanagement of diversity…and pervasive corruption, bad economic policies resulting in extremes of poverty and massive unemployment and galloping inflation.

For these reasons, I kept pointing out to them that the instruments used from 1999 to 2007 and the methodology used will grossly be inadequate for the perilous situation we now find ourselves in. Without prejudice but with the greatest respect for each individual with the utmost regard for the best for Nigeria and all Nigerians and from my personal experience, all the major contestants claim to be my mentees.

I will not deny such positions since I have worked with all of them directly and indirectly in government. I’ve come to realise a number of factors in character, attributes and attitude that are necessary for the job of directing the affairs of Nigeria successfully and at a time.

Like this. These characteristics or attributes are many but let us be mindful of some key ones together.

From interaction and experience, and as mentees as most of them claim, I will, without prejudice, fear or ill-will, make bold to say that there are four major factors to watch out for in a leader you will consider to hoist on yourself and on the rest of Nigerians in the coming election and they are what I call TVCP: Track record of ability and performance; Vision that is authentic, honest and realistic; Character and attributes of a lady and a gentleman who are children of God and obedient to God; and Physical and mental capability with the soundness of mind as it is a very taxing and tasking assignment at the best of times and more so it is at the most difficult time that we are.

Let me say straight away that ‘Emi Lokan’ (My turn) and ‘I have paid my dues’ are one and the same thing and are the wrong attitude and mentality for the leadership of Nigeria now.
They cannot form the new pedestal to reinvent and invest in a new Nigeria based on an All-Nigeria Government for the liberation and restoration of Nigeria.

Such a government must have representation from all sectors of our national life – public, private, civil society, professional, labour, employers, and the diaspora. The solution should be in ‘we’ and ‘us’ and not in ‘me’ and ‘I’. Mind you, I reiterate that no human being is an angel let alone a Messiah, but there are elements of these attributes and on a comparative basis and by the measure of what we know of, and what some of us have experienced from the front-runners, we must assess judiciously and choose wisely. If anybody claims he or she has anything to the contrary, it will be up to him or her to prove it to us.

I pray not to be proved right again in the bad sense but rather to be proved right in the positive and glorious sense of Nigeria becoming what God had created it to be a land of plenty and prosperity united for the common purpose of an inclusive society, common security, shared prosperity, equity, egalitarianism, justice, and equal stake in the Project Nigeria with the leadership role of Nigeria for the black race and fair share of the global division of labour.

One ridiculous point that has been touted to justify unjustifiable appointments and selections is ‘competence’. In truth and in reality, genuine competence can be found in any region or section of Nigeria through track record and performance if only people will honestly and sincerely look hard for people with such attainment and attribute. Most of us in good conscience can testify to competence when we see any anywhere. What is masqueraded as ‘competence’ is self-interest and nepotism. We have a unique opportunity to correct ourselves by ourselves for the good of ourselves. Those who are preaching division, segregation, and separation, and want to use diversity for their own self and selfish interest are enemies of the nation, no matter what else they may disguisedly profess or proclaim. The Challenge Is For Nigerian Youth: If we fall prey again, we will have ourselves to blame and no one can say how many more knocks Nigeria can take before it tips over.

To be forewarned is to be fore-armed. The future is not emotion. I challenge the youth to arise. Let nobody pull wool over your eyes to divide you and/or segregate you to make you underlings.

Nigerian youth, wherever they come from, North or South, East or West need education which is now denied to over 20 million children; Nigerian youth also need skills, empowerment, employment, reasonably good living conditions, welfare and well-being. My dear young men and women, you must come together and bring about a truly meaningful change in your lives. If you fail, you have no one else to blame. Your present and future are in your hands to make or to mar. The future of Nigeria is in the same manner in your hands and literally so. If for any reason you fail to redeem yourself and your country, you will have lost the opportunity for good and you will have no one to blame but yourselves and posterity will not forgive you. Get up, get together, get going and get us to where we should be. And you, the youth, it is your time and your turn. ‘Eyin Lokan’ (Your turn).
The power to change is in your hands. Your future, my future, and the future of grandchildren and great-grandchildren are in your hands.

Politics and elections are a numbers game. You have the numbers, get up, stand up and make your numbers count. Let me say it again, loud and clear, Nigeria has no business with insecurity, poverty, insurgency, banditry, unemployment, hunger, debt, division and disunity. We are in these situations because advertently or inadvertently, our leaders have made the choices. They have done the best they could do. Let them take their rest deservedly or not and let them enjoy their retirement as Septuagenarians or older. I became Head of State at 39 and at 42, I retired to the farm. When it was considered necessary, I was drafted back into active political life after twenty years of interregnum. I came back at 62 and by 70, I was on my way out. Others like General Gowon and Enahoro became national leaders at 33 and 27 respectively and General Gowon at the helm of leadership of Nigeria at the highest level. The vigour, energy, agility, dynamism and outreach that the job of leadership of Nigeria requires at the very top may not be provided by a septuagenarian or older. I know that from personal experience. And it is glaring out of our current experiences. Otherwise, we will be fed with, “The President says” and we will neither see nor hear him directly as we should. Yes, for some, age and physical and mental disposition are not in tandem. But where and when they are with obvious evidence, they must be taken into account for purpose of reality. And yet it is a job in our present situation where the team leader or captain of the team should be up and doing, outgoing inside and outside and speaking to the nation on almost daily basis visibly and as much as possible interactively and meeting his colleagues…all over the world on behalf of Nigeria. Youth of Nigeria, your time has come, and it is now please grasp it. If not now, it will be never.

I appeal to you to turn the tide on its head and march forward chanting ‘Awa Lokan’ (Our turn) not with a sense of entitlement, but with a demonstrable ideological commitment to unity and transformation of Nigeria.

Leave The Past, Face The Future:

Can we let the past go? I appeal to young Nigerians to stop inheriting other people’s prejudices and enemies. Make your own friends and stop inheriting your father’s enemies. Let’s stop criminalizing and demonizing one another on the basis of the civil war on which we are all wrong. And let’s praise and thank God for preserving the oneness of Nigeria.

The Scripture says that if God would take account of all our wrongdoings, nobody would be able to stand before Him. While not suffering from amnesia, let us stop still fighting and reacting to the civil war in our hearts, minds, heads and our attitude acrimoniously. Let’s stop living on our different wrongs or mistakes of the past: treasonable felony, the Tiv riot and its handling, the first military coup and its aftermath, the second military coup, araba, pogrom and the civil war, all in the 1960s. And more recently OPC, Egbesu, MASSOB, IPOB, Boko Haram and banditry. No region can claim to be innocent or to be saintly. And no justification will suffice. In our respective individual or regional positions, we have done right and we have done wrong. It is therefore not right for any of us to be sanctimonious to see ourselves as saints and the rest as devils incarnate. Just let us agree to move forward together in mutual forgiveness, one accord, inclusive society, equality and equity. Together and without bias and discrimination, fear or favour, we can have Nigeria as one nation in diversity, in truth and in practice. Let us honour, cherish, respect and even celebrate our diversity which is the basis of our potential greatness and strength. If we will only continue to harp on wrongs done by each of us individually or collectively, we will never be able to stand together. If we will continue with a wide brush to paint a national or sub-national group as bad and never to be trusted with leadership because of past errors or mistakes that some of them were responsible for and treat their offspring as inheritors, it will amount to great injustice that will surely lead to no peace, no security and no stability for development and progress.

First, no group is faultless; second, for the greatness of the whole, we need one another as constituents of the whole; third, we cannot be talking and working for Africa’s integration and for Nigeria’s disintegration at the same time. Why for instance should I be stigmatized or despised because of my place of origin, place of birth or where I come from? Where I was born, by whom I was born and when I was born were not choices made by me. They were choices and prerogatives of God. Any antagonism against me on that basis is unfair and is tantamount to fighting against God, the Creator. Such a derogatory attitude and mindset do not build any human institution let alone a nation. While not forgetting the past, let us put the past behind us so it does not continue to mar our present and our future and that of the coming generation. We must rise above primordial animalistic instincts and behaviour. Yes, we are human and higher than animals in the wild. Let us develop the national ethos and national characteristics that can take us collectively to the promised. My dear young men and women, let me assure you that there are only two tribes of people in Nigeria a tribe of good people and a tribe of bad people. You are either a good Nigerian of Igbo extraction, Kanuri extraction, etc or a bad Nigerian of Yoruba extraction, Ijaw extraction.

I will at this juncture want to commend the politicians as they have generally been reasonably civil in their campaigns without making politics a call to war against opponents. Genuine and fair competition conveys greater legitimacy in any political rivalry or competition. A situation where people in authority and power assume such positions through foul and despicable means and continue to espouse and act in ways that only engender conflict or war by subverting the legitimacy of power and authority does not augur well for the polity and as such, the moral foundation of the government and the society will be terribly weakened.

May God help, save, protect and sustain Nigeria for all Nigerians, for Africa and for the human race. We can only continue to play politics of ethnicity, religion, region and moneybags at the peril of our country and to self-destruction. We need selfless, courageous, honest, patriotic, in short, outstanding leadership with character and fear of God beyond what we have had in the recent past. None of the contestants is a saint but when one compares their character, antecedent, understanding, knowledge, discipline and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused, on the job particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had, Peter Obi as a mentee has an edge. Others like all of us have what they can contribute to the new dispensation to liberation, restoration and salvaging of Nigeria collectively. One other important point to make about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost. In other words, he has people who can pull his ears, if and when necessary. Needless to say that he has a young and able running mate with a clean track record of achievement both in public and private life.

In conclusion, I want to bring to our remembrance part of the great speech that Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa made on October 7, 1960, on the occasion of Nigeria being admitted as the 99th member of the United Nations: “Cooperation is for each man to be true to his religious belief and to reaffirm the basic principles of his particular creed. It may be that, when we hear the world crying out for peace, we may receive the inspiration, to deal with these intractable problems and be able to really devote all our resources to the advancement of mankind by applying those eternal truths which will inevitably persist long after we ourselves are utterly forgotten”. The Tafawa Balewas are gone but the eternal truths remain and persist that cooperation, friendship, justice, equity, love and fear of God which are hallmarks of the three religions practised in this country are the basis of our full and fulfilled lives and living as Nigerians In faith as Nigerians, we must pray and relate with God as it depends on Him and at the same time, in faith also we must work as it depends on us. Then we will win.

May God continue to help us individually and collectively.

Yours ever,
OLUSEGUN OBASANJO

Opening of the Polling Units:

On each Election Day, polling stations will open for Accreditation and Voting from 8:00 am to 2.00 pm. The Accreditation and Voting Go Simultaneously. However, voters in the queue before the close of the poll at 2:00pm will be accredited and allowed to vote.

Voting Procedure: Voting at the polling unit will be as follows:

Step 1: At the polling unit, join the queue. An INEC official will check if you are at the correct polling unit and confirm that the PVC presented belongs to you.

Step 2: An INEC official will confirm if your PVC is genuine using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

Step 4: The Presiding officer will stamp, sign and endorse your ballot paper. You will be given the ballot paper rolled with the printed side inwards and directed to the voting cubicle.

Step 5: Stain your finger with the ink given and mark the box for your preferred candidate/party. Roll the ballot paper in the manner you were given and flatten it.

APC Presidential Candidate, Tinubu Can’t Recite First Chapter Of Qur’an, Raises Doubts Among Northern Nigerians About His Muslim Faith

APC Presidential Candidate, Tinubu Can’t Recite First Chapter Of Qur’an, Raises Doubts Among Northern Nigerians About His Muslim Faith – US Scholar, Prof. Kperogi

He said that the conversation about the same-faith character of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket appeared to be shifting to questions about whether, in fact, Tinubu is a Muslim.

A Nigerian-American professor and newspaper columnist, Farooq Kperogi, has questioned whether the All Progressives Congress, APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, is actually a Muslim in the real sense of it.

Farouq in an opinion article published on Saturday, titled: “From “Muslim-Muslim” to “is he really a Muslim?”, hinged his comments on the inconsistency of the APC candidate to recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, the first chapter of the Qur’an.

He said that the conversation about the same-faith character of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket appeared to be shifting to questions about whether, in fact, Tinubu is a Muslim.

He noted that Tinubu’s multiple stumbles with reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, the first chapter of the Qur’an were evident when in one instance, he said “bismillahir rahmanir rahim” before saying “auzubillah minashaitan ni rajeem” instead of the other way around.

The media scholar stated that Tinubu had another instance, said “auzubillah minashaitan ni rajeem, bismillahir rahmanir rahim” and couldn’t proceed to the next verse. In confusion, he attempted to translate the verse from Arabic into English but bungled it and even ended up saying “God, the father of all,” which is both an incorrect translation of “Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin” (which actually translates as “Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe”) and a doctrinal outrage in Islam.

Farouq stated that the APC presidential candidate’s call of Allah “father” during an address to Muslims in Kaduna had stirred the question from much Muslim faithful to question his Muslim faith.

According to the article, the trending video shows him straining excessively hard—and failing— to recite “Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin,” the second verse of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, which he had erroneously translated as “God, the father of all” in a previous mishap.

Kperogi said, “Not since 1993 when MKO Abiola chose Babagana Kingibe as his running mate has the religious complexion of a presidential ticket excited the passions of Nigerians as much as Bola Tinubu’s choice of Kashim Shettima as his running mate. It at once got some Christians enraged and some Muslims engaged.

“For a long time, Muslim clerical investment in the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, at least in the Northwest, was proportional to the amount of Christian opposition to it. For instance, in late 2022, an audio recording of a northern Christian, which went viral on WhatsApp, said the victory or defeat of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket in 2023 would be a referendum on the numerical strength of Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.

“Of course, that was a supremely shallow and simplistic, not to mention reductionist, religionization of voting behaviour. Many people vote for reasons other than religion. Peter Obi, whom the audio touted as the “Christian” candidate, will get many Muslim votes, and both Tinubu and Atiku will get many Christian votes.

“But that audio—and several others like it—inspired a backlash of reciprocal religious particularism from previously politically aloof Salafist Muslim clerics in the Hausaphone North who now preach that the success of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket—or, as they call it, Musilim-Musilim ticket—is a religious imperative and that Muslims should support it to signal the supremacy of Islam in Nigeria. That’s also a silly, superficial drivel that ignores the complexity of voting behaviour and the multiplicity of impulses that propel people to vote.

“Anyway, the conversation about the same-faith character of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket appears to be shifting to questions about whether, in fact, Tinubu is a Muslim. This discursive shift is instigated by Tinubu’s multiple stumbles with reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, the first chapter of the Qur’an. In one instance, he said “bismillahir rahmanir rahim” before saying “auzubillah minashaitan ni rajeem” instead of the other way around.

“In another instance, he said “auzubillah minashaitan ni rajeem, bismillahir rahmanir rahim” and couldn’t proceed to the next verse.

“Well, my own sense is that Tinubu is a cultural Muslim. His hometown of Iragbiji in Osun State is predominantly Muslim, particularly when he grew up there in the 1960s. Like most kids in the town, he attended ile kewu (which Hausa speakers call makarantar allo), that is, an informal school for Islamic learning. The way he says “auzubillah minashaitan ni rajeem, bismillahir rahmanir rahim” clearly shows that he was born into Islam and learned to say it from an impressionable age.

“I suspect that after leaving Iragbiji for Lagos (and later for the United States), he ceased to be an observant Muslim, but hasn’t given up his Muslim identity. His trip-ups with reciting the Qur’an first chapter, in my opinion, don’t indicate that he isn’t a Muslim; they only indicate that he hasn’t been praying for most of his post-Iragbiji life.

“Tinubu, as I pointed out in a previous article in 2022, is an effectively non-religious but nominal Muslim. He chose a northern Muslim running mate for precisely that reason. Until recently, Tinubu didn’t identify with Islam publicly, is married to a pastor, and all his children are Christians. He sees himself first as a Yoruba man before he is a nominal Muslim.”

2023: EVIDENCE THAT PETER OBI AND THE LABOUR PARTY ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO VICTORY

8
The Presidential candidate of the Labour Part Mr. Peter Obi
The Presidential candidate of the Labour Part Mr. Peter Obi

Last week, Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), showed his electoral strength with visits to Delta, Anambra, and Enugu states, where he held hugely successful campaign rallies.

By now, His Excellency Peter Obi has solidified his reputation as an ethical candidate who has rejected the politics of corruption, inducement, and crowd-buying. By doing so, he has set himself apart from his main rivals. The crowds at the Labour Party rallies in Delta, Anambra, and Enugu were genuine passionate believers in Obi’s candidacy and the Obidient Movement. They have decided to entrust Nigeria to prudent hands and Obi is the candidate they trust.

At the Anambra rally, the surging, enthusiastic crowd sent a message to the politicians of the old order. Mr Peter Obi is our beloved former governor who served our state with credibility and compassion. As governor of Anambra State, he won all available international awards and recognition for his investment in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social safety programmes. He received high marks from the United Nations, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and countless other organisations. We know his quality, and we are confident he will make us proud as our President.

The debate is now settled. Peter Obi’s campaign is the fastest-growing, most technologically advanced, grassroots movement on the continent. All the polls carried out by professional statistics and data-gathering companies, NOI/ANAP Polls, We2gether, NexTier, Bloomberg, and others, prove that Peter Obi is Nigeria’s most loved, most preferred, and most qualified candidate. We are leading with the youth; we are leading with women; we are leading with men; we are leading in urban and rural areas. Peter Obi dominates the space on social media, which has emerged as the 2nd most important messaging platform. As a frontrunner, we can expect our rivals to express their frustrations with more ad hominem campaigns.

While they go low, we are raising the bar. Last week, our campaign launched the revolutionary Obidient Townhall APP, which connects all Obidients at polling units and wards. Since formally launching the APP on Sunday, 32,360 people have signed up, and we have covered all 36 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, 585 Local Government Areas (75%), 3,997 wards (45%), and 17,144 polling units (9.6%). Obidients are still signing up in record numbers and organising our community in a way that will prevent an electoral heist.

None of their attacks can stick. Peter Obi’s track record for performance and integrity in business and as an elected official is well documented. Every day, Nigerians have seen in Peter Obi the hope for a New Nigeria where everyone is valued, every child is worth investing in, and every dream is realisable. His message of hope and renewal resonates across the country and transcends tribe, religion, and the other factors that have, historically, divided us.

None of their plots to steal the election will work, either. We have gone ahead with their schemes. People determined to take back their country are just too powerful for the traditional electoral criminals. No matter what games they come up with on election day, the people are ready to reject the status quo and entrench purposeful leadership.

These are what the lovers of Nigeria need to do. Keep telling our fellow citizens about the good news of a New Nigeria. Keep educating our people on the importance of the upcoming election. This election will not be about tribe, religion, region, ‘my turn’, slander, or any other factor that has brought Nigeria to the brink of disintegration or bankruptcy. In February, we are going out to vote for Peter Obi as President and Datti Baba-Ahmed as Vice President, the most upstanding, outstanding, and accomplished presidential ticket. The leaders we can believe in.

A win for Peter Obi and the Labour Party is a victory for Nigerians. It means we would be set to take our place of pride in the global community. It means we would have rescued and secured the future of the next generation of Nigerians. Above all, we would have sent a strong message that we reject the politics of division, greed, corruption and all their promoters. In its place, we usher in a new era of peace and shared prosperity for all Nigerians.

Remind our family and friends that we are voting for the Labour Party whose logo is a father, mother, and child – papa, mama, and pikin – LP. Continue volunteering, supporting, donating, and contributing to the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign. Sign-up and download the Obidient Townhall APP at obidatti.support. Use the Townhall APP to connect with other Obidients in your locality. Go to INEC offices and get your permanent voters card (PVC) and be ready to vote.

2023 is the year of Nigerians. It is the year of the youth. It is the year of the people to take back their country from the forces of darkness that have held us back from shining brightly. We are awake, we are ready, and we are taking our Nigeria back.

ALLEGED GRAFT, TREASON: TINUBU, ATIKU SEEK EACH OTHER’S ARREST, DISQUALIFICATION

..APC presidential candidate’s camp, fires first salvo, recalls Ex VP’s quarrel with Obasanjo over SPV accounts.

..Atiku retorts, sites forfeiture in US case over narcotics – Vanguard reports

The intrigues trailing the race for the presidency assumed a dangerous twist, yesterday, as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, called for the arrest and disqualification of each other over allegations of graft.

Tinubu threw the first punch when he asked security agencies in the country to invite, arrest, interrogate and prosecute Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over what he described as #AtikuGate.

Citing a video clip made by one Michael Achimugu, said to be a former aide of the PDP standard bearer, Tinubu said Atiku as vice president between 1999 and 2007, colluded with his then boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, to operate an illegal account tagged, “Special Purpose Vehicles” SPVs.

He accused the PDP-led administration between 1999 and 2007 of running a criminal enterprise, describing the era as the “SPV Years.”

Responding in kind, Atiku and the PDP described Tinubu as a convict, who should not be in the presidential race, adding that Tinubu’s alleged $460,000 drug money forfeiture was evidence of a crime.

Tinubu’s attack

Minister of State, Labour and Employment; and Chief Spokesman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council PCC, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, had forwarded a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC and the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, seeking arrest and prosecution of Atiku.

In the petition filed as a “Concerned Nigerian”, Keyamo gave a 72-hour ultimatum to the anti-graft agencies to “arrest/invite, interrogate and prosecute one Alhaji Atiku Abubakar”, failing which he said he would approach the courts to compel the agencies to act.

Noting that Atiku does not enjoy immunity simply because he is a presidential candidate, the APC candidate asked the former vice president to apologize and renounce his ambition.

He, however, said he would, in the coming days, approach the courts to seek Atiku’s disqualification from the presidential race.

According to him, Atiku is not God and does not enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution, and urged security agencies not to be reluctant in arresting him simply because he is vying for president.

He said former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, was jailed for the offences of paying state money into a company, Marine Float, linked to Atiku, insisting that the former vice-president must be arrested.

Tinubu spoke in Abuja at the PCC headquarters in Abuja yesterday through the full complement of his media directorate.

While the text of a prepared speech was read by Keyamo, he was flanked by the Special Adviser, Media, Communications and Public Affairs at the PCC, Mr Dele Alake; Director, Media and Publicity, Mr Bayo Onanuga; Director, of Special Media Projects/New Media, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode; and, Director, Strategic Communications, Alhaji Idris Mohammed.

The PCC queried the sources of wealth of both Obasanjo and Atiku, especially with regard to building their individual private universities.

On whether former President Obasanjo should equally be arrested, the PCC said the onus was on the security agencies to open investigations into the issue and arrest anyone found wanting, no matter how highly placed.

Atiku’s alleged 4 offences

While the council played a two-minute recorded voice call purported to be a conversation between Messrs Achimugu and Atiku, it listed four offences allegedly committed by the former vice president.

The alleged offences are a Breach of the Code of Conduct Act, Money Laundering, Criminal Breach of Trust and Conspiracy.

According to the PCC, Atiku may have gone against the provisions of Sections 5, 10, 13 & 17 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act; Section 18 (2) of the Money Laundering (Prevention And Prohibition Act), 2022; Section 311 of the Penal Code Law and Section 96 (1) of the Penal Code Act In Nigeria.

No immunity

The council noted that law enforcement agencies may be reluctant to act simply because of the perception of persecution of a presidential candidate that the action may evoke.

However, it said facts are sacred and that the facts so far presented to the world clearly indicate that Atiku Abubakar has a case to answer.

“In other climes when such serious allegations arose in the middle of campaigns, the law-enforcement agencies acted decisively. You may recall that, in 2016, in the middle of campaigns for the exalted office of the Presidency of the United States, the FBI opened investigations into allegations of misuse of private emails against Hillary Clinton when she was Secretary of State.

“In fact, the case was referred to the Justice Department for likely prosecution a few weeks before the actual voting. Though she was later cleared, it bears restating that a sane and dispassionate system never allowed such side talks to dissuade or distract them from initiating an investigation process. It is the minimum expected in a constitutional democracy. That is what we call on the authorities to do in the case of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Marine Float Account

“The issue of the Marine Float Account is not new to Nigerians. In the voice note, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar can be heard boasting that the issue of that account was thoroughly investigated by EFCC.

“However, we note that in 2006, at the height of his public quarrel with Obasanjo, the same PDP officially asked Atiku Abubakar to refund N500 million taken from that account.

“In the circumstance, since the nation knows that the Marine Float Account and other similar accounts were ‘SPV’ accounts, all payments made into that account were monies stolen from public coffers. Therefore, we call on all security agencies to recover all monies withdrawn from that account by anyone for that matter.

“In the light of these very grave revelations, we call on Atiku Abubakar to immediately tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people and step down from the Presidential race forthwith, whilst handing himself over to the law enforcement agencies.

“Following these revelations, it becomes clear that Atiku Abubakar has absolutely nothing to campaign on again as the period of 1999-2007 that he always relies on can now be described by Nigerians as the ‘SPV years’ when they ran Nigeria aground.

“That whilst President Obasanjo and Atiku deprived the good people of Lagos State of their Local Government monthly allocations even after the Supreme Court ordered the release of the funds, they were busy using the SPV for other things.

“That the real, dark reason for the seemingly irreconcilable quarrel between President Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar is disagreement over the ‘SPV’ accounts at that time.

“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians and the law-enforcement agencies to protect Mr Michael Achimugu, who has blown this whistle on Atiku Abubakar. No harm must befall him or members of his family.

“We shall hold Atiku Abubakar responsible if anything befalls this patriotic Nigerian or members of his family. We also encourage him to reveal to Nigerians those ‘earth-shaking’ revelations he is withholding for the sake of this nation and the future of our children.

“It is our firm belief that the judiciary is the last hope for the hopeless. In this case, the judiciary will not be quiet as we shall clearly take steps in the next few days to initiate a judicial process seeking the outright disqualification of Atiku Abubakar from the race based on these facts. He is clearly ethically challenged, morally damaged for the highest office of the land”, the council added.

Arrest, question Tinubu for treason, PDP tells security agencies

Countering, the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign has demanded the immediate arrest and questioning of Tinubu for his alleged formation of a uniformed gang of thugs code-named “Jagaban Army” for the sole purpose of committing an electoral heist.

The spokesman of the campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Monday. Ologbondiyan described the formation of the uniformed squad by the All Progressives Congress (APC) code-named “Jagaban Army” as “a treasonable act and calls for the arrest and questioning of the APC Presidential Candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

He further said: “The Jagaban Army, which is apparently set up to disrupt the 2023 general elections and raid polling units for votes on behalf of APC Presidential candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a direct affront to the Nigeria Armed Forces and other security agencies as well as an assault on the sovereignty of our nation.

“It is reprehensible that Tinubu can create a rogue force just for the purposes of undermining the electoral and security arrangements of our nation.

‘Our Campaign holds that this nefarious act of the APC Tinubu/Shettima Campaign lends credence to the position of the PDP and well-meaning Nigerians that Tinubu, as well as his rank and file, have set out to make our nation ungovernable and thereafter disrupt the 2023 Presidential election scheduled for February 25, 2023, using his army of ‘Jagabandits’.

“The notion of Jagaban Army is a ploy to bring hoodlums, thugs and gangsters together under the cover of the APC and turn them into an official militia that will be used to unleash mayhem on the day of the election.

“This reckless anti-democratic plot by the ‘Jagabandits’ must also be condemned by all lovers of democracy in Nigeria and across the world over.

“We call on the security agencies to save the lives of Nigerians and protect our electoral process by immediately going after this dangerous formation, arresting those behind this design and saving our nation from electoral violence.

“Our campaign counsels Tinubu to note that his Presidential ambition is not a do-or-die affair and that he should not set the nation ablaze just because Nigerians have rejected him and his party, the APC for their mass failures.”

Tinubu’s $460,000 drug money forfeiture evidence of a crime —PDP

In like manner, the PDP dismissed Tinubu’s calls and allegations against Atiku as “simulated allegations” and attempts to divert public attention from the issues affecting Nigerians.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in a statement said: “It is indeed ironic that an embattled Tinubu, who is beleaguered by uncountable cases of fraudulent activities, including perjury, forgery, treasury looting, corruption and narcotic-related conviction can attempt to impugn on the unimpeachable integrity of the PDP Presidential Candidate.

“For clarity and for the interest of Nigerians, it is on record that Atiku Abubakar is one of the most investigated public officials in this country. It is also on record that in all the investigations undertaken over him and his affairs, Atiku Abubakar was never found culpable in any of the allegations.

“In contrast, however, the APC Presidential Candidate has a litany of confirmed legal impediments on very grave issues including those that border on international crime, namely; trafficking in narcotics and taking proceeds of narcotics.

“In the recent case revealed in the United States of America, it is on record that the APC Presidential Candidate forfeited the sum of $460,000 which was confirmed and found to be proceeds of trafficking in narcotics; an international crime for which Nigeria, being a signatory to International Convention on trafficking in narcotics is obliged to enforce.

“The effect of the conviction and forfeiture of the sum of $460,000 by Asiwaju Tinubu confirms that he is ineligible and not qualified to contest for the Office of the President of Nigeria as required by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

The PDP Spokesman who is a lawyer by training further said: “For clarity, Section 137 (1) (d) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) provides that:(1) “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if…

“(d)He is under a sentence of death imposed by any competent court of law or tribunal in Nigeria or a sentence of imprisonment or fine for any offence involving dishonesty or fraud (by whatever name called) or for any other offence, imposed on him by ANY COURT or tribunal or substituted by a competent authority for any other sentence imposed on him by such a court or tribunal”.

“Having been convicted, sentenced and fined for narcotic trafficking in a criminal suit filed pursuant to the United States Criminal Code, Asiwaju Tinubu cannot by virtue of Section 137 (1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) seek office as President of Nigeria.

“The APC Presidential Candidate has not come out to deny the conviction and forfeiture or show evidence of any attempt by him to challenge or appeal the judgment, apparently believing that it will slide with time.

“Asiwaju Tinubu ought to know that time does not run against the State in a criminal matter!

“He should therefore withdraw from the Presidential race having been found ineligible and not qualified to run or to contest for the Office of the President of Nigeria under the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.”
