Now that Buhari Has Cowed Nigerians, What Next – By Chief Dele Momodu

President Buhari with Chief Dele Momodu.

Fellow Nigerians, let me take you back to the year 1998, the 7th day of the month of July to be precise. Chief Moshood Abiola had just been pronounced dead, just like that, and everything, and everywhere, was topsy-turvy. We were numb beyond words. A new leader had taken power the month before, after the sudden death of the maximum ruler, General Sani Abacha. How can two antagonists die in a similar fashion, one month apart, we wondered, ponderously.

Anyway, as with everything Nigerian, life soon moved on, without much ado. A few irate students, led by Omoyele Sowore, ranted and raved but their fireballs soon disintegrated and dissolved into ashes. Those of us in exile were left stupefied. In all honesty, we had all individually and collectively given our best to the struggle, but our best was simply not enough. Man and God had contrived to deprive us of our greatest democratic moment as a nation. It does not appear that our democratic nous and ethos will ever reach the dizzying heights of those glorious days! We lost Abiola and we lost the mandate freely given to him by the good people of Nigeria. So, we were back to square one.

Tokunbo Afikuyomi and I offered ourselves as Guinea pigs and meandered our way back home the same way we had navigated our ways through the forest of a thousand daemons to escape from the Gulag and what appeared at the time the most brutishly ruthless dictatorship in Nigeria. What we found out on our return was unbelievable and shocking. Our politicians had barely waited for Abiola to be interred before they started their stock in trade, jostling for power and lucre.

We returned to London, very frustrated about our experience at home. What we suffered through the labyrinth of madness called the Seme border is another matter entirely and a story for another day. Back in England, some of our compatriots were still blowing grammar. Saying we must fight the military. We no go gree, like students’ union leaders love to chant every now and then, during Aluta struggles in our diverse universities. The difference was we were not students, and this was real-life, off-campuses.

We decided to tell our elders in the Diaspora the gospel truth. Those at home were not in sync with those fighting from abroad. The exposure and experience we had all gained during our sojourn and desperate struggle for truth and justice seemed totally lost on our compatriots at home. Our vision and mission were quite clearly totally divergent. One thing led to another and many of the NADECO Chieftains agreed to return home. It was over, as simple as that. That was the reality.

The regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar decided it would hand over government to a civilian government in under one year and it stuck rigidly to its transition timetable despite serious temptations to extend its set tenure. If we thought the military reign was reaching its terminal end, we were dead wrong. The military was merely beginning to prepare for tenure elongation albeit in a civilian toga.

The first election was therefore won by a retired military General, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. And it became obvious that the military establishment was not yet ready to relax and reduce its iron grip on Nigeria’s jugular. Most of those who paraded the corridors of power were military men in civilian garb. Four years later, President Obasanjo sought another term and got it. Meanwhile, throughout all this, there was no provision for the inclusion of the NADECO fighters as reparation for the dastardly acts against Abiola and his supporters.

Let’s fast forward a little. After a controversial third-term attempt for President Obasanjo by some political jobbers fell flat, a brother of a former military General, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was brought on board to take over the reins of power. It was like a change of baton in an exclusive relay race by the military. By the sheer act of providence, President Yar’Adua took critical I’ll and died in office. This was how fate threw up a complete stranger to the military establishment and virtual lone ranger on the balcony of power, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as President.

It was obvious some members of a most powerful cabal were not happy about the emergence of Jonathan, a man from one of the politically disadvantaged and handicapped regions of Nigeria, the South-South. The Ijaw heritage of Jonathan was meant to be his Achilles heel but the man trudged on till he completed the tenure of his departed boss. Of course, against all odds, he contested for his own term and won. That was in 2011. I was privileged to have been a Presidential candidate at that time.

President Jonathan’s tenure was marred by many turbulent upheavals, the worst being the Boko Haram menace. There were also instances of reckless looting of the national treasury and well-documented profligacy by his PDP apparatchiks. President Jonathan shot himself in the foot and incurred the wrath of the people when in the midst of horrendous poverty, he sharply increased the prices of petroleum products, astronomically.

That was the moment many felt he had goofed beyond repair. I was one of those who participated in global protests against his government. I wrote copiously, granted interviews and generally became a thorn in the flesh of the Jonathan administration along with several others. Jonathan was so derided and became butts of jokes everywhere. It was only a matter of time before Jonathan and his motley crew of pillaging merry men would be sacked from power.

I must confess that at the height of our stupidity and naivety, in retrospect, we threw caution to the winds. We wrote off Jonathan despite occasional flashes of genius and inspiration by some members of his team.

In the meantime, former Nigerian Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) was repackaged to smell like roses and we all fell for the promise of Eldorado he seemed to hold at the time. I was one of those who jumped on the bandwagon to describe him as a born-again Democrat, despite some strident and persistent warnings by then Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and others.

Perhaps we were fooled by the fact in quick succession he had picked Pentecostal pastors as his running mate Pastor Tunde Bakare in 2011 and Professor Yemi Osinbajo in 2015. Those who told us that our Hallelujah Choruses were premature and that a leopard can never change its spots were castigated and hounded by those of us who had been converted to what we believed was the new Buhari. We sang in unison that anyone but Jonathan. The rest is history.

Step forward, President Buhari, and take a bow. You rode back triumphantly to power, 30 years after you were sacked by General Ibrahim Babangida. What a feat! The world rejoiced at the final collapse of the PDP behemoth. Our Messiah had come. Most of our prominent challenges would soon evaporate and vamoose. Praise the Lord.

Let me not bore you with how those four years were spent, again, just like that. I leave the judgment of what happened to fellow Nigerians. Excuses became the art and science of governance. The past governments and their ruling party, PDP, were blamed for virtually everything under the sun. No worries.

We didn’t expect Buhari to fix the accumulated problems of 16 or more years in a short while. Initially, we thought he would eventually settle down and make inroads into the problems that he had inherited. In any event, we also didn’t expect him to add more to those problems. The little we expected was for Buhari to bring stability to the polity. Again we were wrong.

Everything fell apart and the issue of security which was supposed to be easy meat for our President being a respected, respectable and retired General has become an albatross for the government. So, again, foul. We goofed. I don’t know how to put it any better. With excellent performance, no one would have taken note of a few human rights infringements here and there. We would have tolerated it as the price we probably needed to pay for the stellar performance that we are getting. However, the converse became the case. There are more and more human rights abuses and less and less convincing performances.

Slowly but steadily, a supposed Democratic government began its relentless assault on what our Constitution had enshrined as a government of separation of powers. President Buhari took up the role of an avuncular leader and school headmaster. He simply encroached into territories that were clearly not his to tamper with. If Jonathan had tried a small fraction of this, hell would have known no bigger fury. Yet most of our leaders and elders have disappeared from the radar without as much as a whimper.

You brood of hypocrites! Jonathan was our whipping boy and we trounced, thrashed and trashed him mercilessly. But now, we have lost our voices. It is not just that our criticism has become muted, they have become practically non-existent because the Presidential trolls have been relentless in the way and manner that they have traduced the few honourable critics.

Our pen tigers have stopped writing. Our loquacious activists have since absconded and abdicated their once noble responsibilities. Such is life. The oppressed, according to Paulo Freire, only fear and respect their oppressors. We have all seemingly been cowed (no pun intended) into submission. Heaven forbid! That is neither the Nigerian spirit nor the psyche!

Was this the Democracy we fought for with sweat and blood? When our human rights crusaders were preaching and pontificating and condoning extrajudicial treatment against the so-called sinners and looters and a few of us pleaded for caution, we were attacked as supporting and promoting corruption.

When the government goons went after the judges in the dead of the night and we raised alarm, we were called by names our parents did not give us at birth. When the hooded ones invaded the National Assembly in order to obliterate their sworn enemy, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, they said we have been bought and should shut up. But today the chickens have come home to roost.

Our dear friend, Omoyele Sowore, has been captured, detained and is about to be guillotined for using a word that was just one in the arsenal and vocabulary of this government when it was in opposition. The impugned language is one APC leaders have all used in the past, indeed they have said worse. They have rallied, railed and planned a road demonstration that they had joined openly in the past without any repercussion.

The lesson in this for me is that we must all stand firm for the rights of every man at all times, be it a saint or sinner. The resort to jungle justice and rabid impunity is what has made it possible for any government to pounce on Omoyele Sowore, a man whose tongue is sharper than a razor blade and a pen mightier than an atomic bomb but who in reality can never carry a physical weapon and has not encouraged anyone to do so in this ‘revolution’ that he has called for.

Indeed, it is only those who are blood-thirsty that would see what is said as anything other than a clamour for a peaceful and democratic change in government within constitutional means. As a matter of fact, the revolution Sowore called for, whatever your interpretation, was not as popular on the streets until a panic-stricken government elevated and catapulted it to a dizzying height, a free and cheap publicity that was unsolicited by the conveners.

Now we have succeeded in diverting attention from the killer herdsman who has been on a rampage. Is it not an irony that Sowore was arrested for doing virtually nothing bigger than what he and many of us did to support Buhari when he was still one of us. Let us hope in the spirit of this Sallah, that the Federal Government will change its mind, and possibly its style, of killing flies with a sledgehammer…

Marriage BETWEEN ANGER AND HUNGER

0
Nigeria's deadly history of agression over the years
Nigeria's deadly history of agression over the years

Mister Anger was born with a stone face in the Grievance City of Nigeria. His boyhood days were torturous. His parents died when he was only eleven and a half years old. Thus he was left to the care of his grandmother called Madam Sadness. Both of them living together were like cat and mouse. Laughter and cheerfulness were scarce commodities in their home. Due to the strange living between the son and the grandmother, Miss Love, the sister of Anger, got married early to a man from Liberia. She vowed never to set foot in her fatherland Nigeria again. Madam Sadness later died of a sudden heart attack. As a result, Anger was compelled to live alone. He was a wheelbarrow pusher by profession. His life became more miserable after the demise of his grandmother. To say the least, he began to live in a lonely and miserable world.

After about two years, Anger decided to get married. To find a suitable bride was for him as difficult as finding a saint in hell. All the girls he approached turned him down. Their reason was because they do not want to start living in hell from this world. After several trials to get a wife, Anger approached a powerful priest for miracle prayer. The priest told him that grace works on nature. Therefore he must get rid of the bitterness in his heart before any miracle begins to happen. He told the priest that even if the vulture bathes seven times a day, his ugliness remains. Indeed, the incurable disease has no medication.

Having tried and failed many times to find a life partner, Anger decided to remain a perpetual bachelor. He concentrated his effort on getting his daily bread. For him, life is a primary value. Marriage can wait. The local he-goat is short by nature. It happened that his (the he-goat) kinsmen came to pray for him to grow tall. The he-goat pleaded with them to pray not for his growth but rather for him to live because anyone who lives must grow. When all hopes seemed to have been lost, Anger suddenly fell in love with a lady whose name was Hunger. They entered into a courtship for about three months. Then the dowry was paid. Their wedding card read: “Anger weds Hunger.” They shared ‘ger’ in common. Whoever received the invitation card exclaimed, “God forbid!” There was a turbulent wind and heavy rain on their wedding day. Many saw it as an indication that their marriage would be turbulent and tearful. The church minister asked them at the Altar on that special day: “Anger and Hunger, do you promise to love each other all the days of your lives?” They answered one after the other, “I do.” While exchanging rings, each said, “Take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity.” They were happy because if love eludes them, they will find solace in Fidelity Bank Plc.

After rain comes sunshine. The taste of the pudding is in the eating. From the Altar, Anger and Hunger went home to consummate their marriage. Instead of enjoying a honeymoon, they ended up having a bitter moon. They had a serious quarrel on the first night and fought on the second night. On the third day, they disgraced themselves in the public by telling themselves off. From that day till one month, they were not on talking terms with each other. They communicated only by proxy. Despite their strange relationship, they were blessed with three sound children. The first was a male. His name was Jealousy. The second was a female whose name was Hatred. The third was also feminine by gender. Her name was Ugliness. The three children rarely agreed among themselves and with their parents. Indeed their home was always on fire. They were looking forward always Peace to paying them a reconciliatory visit. Food was also lacking in their home. Thus a hungry person is an angry person. An angry person has no peace of mind. Someone who is hungry and angry is somehow comatose.

A marriage devoid of happiness does not last. Patience makes a house to be home. Since happiness and patience were lacking between Anger and Hunger, the marriage broke down after five years of hide and seek. They divorced themselves violently. They shared their children at a ratio of two to one. Anger got the son and the second daughter. Hunger took the first daughter. They also shared their property at the same ratio of 2:1. They parted ways and vowed never to see each other’s face again. Their characters were incompatible.

The evil that men do lives with them. My humble opinion is that children should never suffer for the sins of their parents unless they are accomplices. Anger and Hunger did not live long after their divorce. Both died miserable deaths in mysterious circumstances. The vulture was extremely happy on the days of their demise. The three children of Anger and Hunger namely: Jealousy, Hatred and Ugliness, were innocent of their parent’s sins. Hence they prospered. Jealousy got married to Happiness. Hatred married Love. Ugliness exchanged a marital vow with Beauty. Before ascending the Altar for the solemnization of their marriages, they publicly made changes of names. Jealousy took the name, James. Hatred was called Henrietta. Ugliness changed to Euphemia.

Marriage was ordained by God for the good and happiness of a man and a woman. The purposes of marriage are companionship, procreation, upbringing and education of children. On the other hand, the essential properties of marriage are unity and indissolubility. A diriment impediment renders a person incapable of contracting a marriage. Such impediments include consanguinity, adoptive relationship, impotence, previous bond, crime, deceit, lack of consent, lack of love, force and mental disorder. Any marriage contracted under any of the above impediments is intrinsically invalid.

In 1914, Niger got married to Area, which gave rise to Nigeria. The Minister was Lord Lugard. Economic reasons motivated him to marry the parties and bind them together without seeking their consent. It was a polygamous marriage. The various entities and tribes around the Niger area were married together without their consent and controlled by the British Colonial Masters. Through the efforts of our founding fathers like Great Zik of Africa, Obafemi Awolowo, Abubakar Tafawa Belewa, etc, Nigeria divorced from Britain and was given Independence on 1st October 1960. She became a Republic in 1963. At the time of Independence Nigeria begot four children known as Northern Region, Eastern Region, Western Region and Mid-western Region. These four regions later gave birth to twelve children otherwise known as 12 States.

Because of the corrupt attitude of those at the helm of affairs at post-Independence, greed set in and things fell apart. The centre could not hold again. Thus, the Military struck in 1966 and took over power from the corrupt civilians. There was a counter-coup in the same year which produced another military leader. Due to the incompatibility of the ethnicities that got into forceful marriages, a pogrom arose in 1966. This gave rise to the civil war which began in 1967 and ended in 1970. Today, Nigeria has 36 children (states). These children still find it difficult to live together due to the forceful marriage of 1914. To solve the persistent problem of marriage, a National Conference was held in 2014, after 100 years of existence. Some vital decisions were made on the way forward. Those decisions were documented and kept in the archive without implementation. Hence our marital problems as a Nation continue unabated. As a way forward, philanthropic Nigerians are calling for the implementation of some or all of the 2014 Confab decisions.

There is an urgent call to go back to the 1963 Constitution which stipulated the tenets of true Federalism. The current 1999 Constitution (as amended) was hurriedly tinkered with by the Military and forced on us. It lacks true Federalism. It does not ensure true democratic principles. Hence there are agitations from different ethnic groups. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) agitated to go their own way without any violence. They were stopped and proscribed by the present Federal Government. The Islamic Movement of Nigeria protested for the release of their leader, El-Zakzaky, who has been granted bail by the competent court. The Federal Government proscribed them recently. There is an urgent need for the Federal Government to dialogue with her agitating and protesting children. Prescription or clampdown is not the solution. The husband, wife and children need to dialogue in order to settle their differences and find a lasting solution.

Insecurity is the worst problem Nigeria is having now. Since terrorism started in Nigeria a few years ago by the Boko Haram sect, we have fallen from a frying pan into the fire. Thousands of innocent civilians and soldiers have lost their lives. Many have been displaced from their homes and are yet to return. Property and houses have been destroyed. The Buhari government still insists that Boko Haram has been defeated. But what we hear and see proves the contrary. The terrorists have regrouped and are fighting to the finish. Our soldiers are doing their best.

As we are complaining that the rat bit someone to death, the lizard went to sharpen its teeth. The bloody Fulani herdsmen are terrorizing Nigerians here and there. Many lives have been lost so far. They are armed with Ak-47 and freely go about shooting and killing farmers, villagers and passers-by. Presently, the herdsmen, kidnappers and bandits have occupied the bushes near the highways all over the country as their base. The daughter of the Afenifere ethnic group was shot dead a few weeks ago along Ore – Lagos road. Last week, a Catholic priest from Enugu was allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen as he was driving home around 7.30p.m. Travelling along lonely and bushy roads is now a nightmare. They attack from the bush. Are the attackers, ghosts or human beings? Sunny Okosun sang many years ago: “Which way Nigeria is heading to?” Indeed, Nigeria is dying as he predicted long ago.

To crown it all, most Nigerians are hungry and angry. A hungry man is an angry man. The dividends of Democracy have eluded the citizenry. Poverty has crippled many Nigerians. Millions of Nigerians are jobless. An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. That is why crimes are increasing day after day. The government in power seems not to feel the pulse of the people. You cannot beat a child and order him not to cry. Suppression is not the answer. The wind of Revolution is blowing seriously now. Only good governance can pacify the people. A stitch in time saves nine.

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Russia, Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (Rtd) passes on to glory, aged 80

Elder Statesman and former Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary with concurrent accreditation to Russia and Belarus, Retired Air Commodore Dan Suleiman has passed on to glory in Abuja at the age of 80. This was disclosed by his daughter Aisha on Wednesday. “According to the daughter Aisha, the Senior Officer (Suleiman) died at approximately 1100 hrs at his home in Wuse II Abuja”. “His remains have been deposited at the morgue of NAF Hospital Abuja pending family decision on next line of action”.

Late Ambassador Dan Suleiman was a member of General Murtala Muhammed’s Supreme Military Council between July 1975 and March 1976. He was the military governor of Plateau State from March 1976 to July 1978 after it had been created from part of the old Benue Plateau State.

After the return to democracy in 1999 in the Nigerian Fourth Republic, Ambassador Suleiman became Chairman of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), a socio-political group representing the people of the Middle Belt of Nigeria. Ambassador Suleiman played a leading role during the Nigerian Civil War (1966–1970). He was appointed to the cabinet of General Gowon in January 1975.

As Federal Commissioner for Special Duties, he was instrumental in founding the ECOWAS. He assisted in the military coup of 29 July 29 1975, when Gowon was deposed, and replaced by General Murtala Muhammed. Following the coup, he was appointed a member of the Supreme Military Council. Late General Murtala Mohammed appointed him Commissioner for Health. The Elder Statesman was appointed the first military governor of Plateau State from March 1976 to July 1978, after Benue-Plateau State was divided into Benue State and Plateau State.

As governor, he made the progressive proposal that anyone born in Plateau State or anyone who had lived in the state for 20 years should enjoy all the rights and privileges of a native regardless of ethnic origin. Suleiman was Chairman of Allied Bank of Nigeria Plc between 1984 and 1986. He resisted the leadership after the elections of 12 June 1993 were annulled. As a result of being one of the founders of NADECO, he went into exile only to return on 7 October 1998.

He became a leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State. The party went on to win the national elections in 1999. He later became chairman of the Middle Belt Forum in September 2001, as chairman of the MBF. In the 2003 PDP primaries in Delta State, he was head of the electoral panel. He joined the board of directors of Trans Nationwide Express.

By 2006, he was the Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary with concurrent accreditation to Russia and Belarus. In June 2007, he was summoned to Russia’s Foreign Ministry to discuss the kidnapping of six Russian employees of RUSAL, the world’s largest aluminium producer. The workers were snatched from the company’s residential compound in the Niger Delta. In June 2009, President Yar’adua appointed him chairman of the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria. The Elder statesman celebrated his 80th Birthday on 30th June 2022.

While serving as Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary with concurrent accreditation to Russia and Belarus, he was a sincere and God-fearing man. Ambassador Dan Suleiman remains the only ambassador who truly deserves to be called “Your Excellency” because he lived an excellent and decent life. He was financially prudent when he served as an Ambassador here in Russia during Obasanjo’s presidency.

His financial prudence was displayed when he genuinely used the Four Million United States Dollars allocated for the purchase of the first and only Nigerian mission (Embassy) in Moscow, Russia, without adding extra cost as is commonly practised by most public servants in Nigeria. The beautiful and clean building which formally belonged to an American missionary and religious organisation was located at No 4 Frezernaya street, Moscow.

Unfortunately, the Nigerian Mission that Ambassador Suleiman bought was re-sold for Five million Dollars by the then Charge D’ Affairs and his gang of rogues who took office after him citing false excuses to justify their actions and the money was shared. This was a Federal Government of Nigeria’s property located in the centre of Moscow and sold for a paltry sum of Five Million Dollars without an authorisation order from the Federal government of Nigeria. Currently, the market price of that building is now valued at over Fifty Million Dollars. This has deprived us of the opportunity of owning a Nigerian mission in Moscow, and to date, we never had our own mission building.

As I write this, Nigeria continues to rent property in the centre of Moscow at an exorbitant cost per annum, which is almost the same cost Ambassador Dan Suleiman bought the one that was sold.

Read what Paul Kagame said to Rwandan Youth at the graduation of the “Itorero” training

President Paul Kagame addressing the Rwandan Youths at their graduation from the "Itorero" training in August 2019 (Rwandan NYSC version)

Wow! I’m speechless. President Paul Kagame while addressing Rwandan Youths at their graduation from the “Itorero” training in August 2019 (Rwandan NYSC version), said the following;

“The 1994 genocide was an example of how the West is waiting on us to kill each other so they can share our gold and take our lands. I and your fathers came and stopped the killings.

Now, they are not happy, and they might kill me, but before then, I want you to understand that your destiny is in your hands. Do not allow yourselves to be manipulated into thinking that you are inferior.

Do not allow yourselves to be manipulated by the Arab religion (I’m talking about Islam) or the Western version of Christianity. These two religions make our people fight, kill and manipulate each other.

You must protect your cultural heritage, you must protect the lands, you must farm your food, you must protect the forest, you must fly rockets to space, and you must invent AI technology. You’re the pride of Africa, you must always remember this.”

THE UGLY NIGERIAN By Femi Aribisala

0

Femi-Aribisala

Don’t speak English like an Ibadan man.  Speak with the kind of phonetics that even your mother will wonder where you were born.

There are an estimated 190 million Nigerians. The overwhelming proportion of these will live and die unknown and unsung.  Airports will not be named after them. Neither will universities be established in their honour. A hundred years from now, people will not even remember they ever existed, except that they might have some children and grandchildren hanging around.

Surely, you don’t want that to happen to you. You want to be known. You want to be rich.  You want to be a man or woman of timber and calibre. There are peculiarly Nigerian ways to achieve this. The formulas have been firmly established by our good-for-nothing politicians and businessmen. But don’t worry; they don’t own the copyright to them, so you are free to follow their vainglorious footsteps.

If you would like to be another one of our ugly Nigerians, all you have to do is follow the ignoble blueprints firmly established by our rogue politicians, our 419 pastors and our “yahoo yahoo” entrepreneurs.

Don’t waste your time going to school. Don’t waste time trying to develop a cure for cancer. Nigerians are not known for such endeavours, and we don’t appreciate those who waste their lives ensuring we have a better future. We are only interested in those who are committed to today.

If you want to be a big man or woman; if you want to be well-known and highly-regarded in Nigeria, there are a few easy steps you need to take.  Here are some suggestions that are bound to ensure that you will soon become the talk of the town. They may also ensure that you are not remembered after you die, but I don’t think you are going to be too bothered about that.

Steal public funds

Nigerians love thieves. We have a lot of respect for them. Thieves are the men and women of the people. Thieves are deemed to be people of courage and strategic thinking. In a nation of the poor, people are concerned that their kith and kin should be represented in the tabernacles of the looters. Otherwise, we feel short-changed. Therefore, the man who wants to be highly regarded knows his thievery will elicit wide support and appreciation among his people.

If you ever get access to public funds, don’t make the mistake of stealing millions of naira. Steal billions. Remember, you might not get a second chance.  It is turn-by-turn Nigeria Limited. Commit a tithe of your stolen loot to public largesse and you are in for the good. Use a fraction of it to build a monument for yourself in your village and bring the press to the unveiling.

Steal billions then spend a few thousand sending three children in your community to school. In no time at all, you will become a superstar. Friends will donate their daughters for you to marry. Streets will be named after you long before you die.  You will be invited to seat on the high table at public functions.

Display your wealth. Nigerians have a simple demand: “Show us the money.” Therefore, show off the money. Don’t buy a Mercedes Benz.  Every Tom, Dick and Harry now drives that. Drive cars that are outrageously expensive and unusual. Make sure they are bullet-proof; not because anybody will shoot at you, but because bullet-proof cars are more highly-regarded. Buy a Ferrari, a Lamborghini or an Aston Martin.  Let it be in a flashy colour. Then cruise every now and then in the Lagos traffic jam.

Get a good PR firm. Give them a simple agenda: to make you famous.  Make sure you are at any and every happening event in Nigeria.  Hang out with celebrities. With brown envelopes given to strategically-placed journalists, you can ensure you are always in the news. Make sure you are a regular feature in the Ovation and Style pictorial magazines.

If you are caught by EFCC and brought to trial, buy “aso-ebi” for your supporters’ club. Bring them to court with you so they can sing your praise songs. Write a cheque and give it to the judge. The case will be promptly thrown out on the grounds of a technicality. But if you are convicted and sent to jail, all bets are off.

Run for president

If you want to be highly esteemed in Nigeria, you need to run for high office. Don’t waste time focusing on being a local government chairman. Don’t even consider being a congressman or a senator. Run for president. The fact that you don’t stand a chance does not matter.  You will get all the plaudits you need by the mere fact of running for the office.

Declare your candidacy long before the election, so you will have a long time to be interviewed on the radio and television and to have specials done about you in the newspapers. Enjoy the limelight. Tell people that God appeared to you in a dream and declared that you are the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Don’t worry when this prophecy fails. People are more interested in the declaration of a prophecy than in its failure.

If it fails, you can keep running for election as president every four years. That way, people will realise that your prophecy is still on the way. When the election results are announced, go on television and declare that it was the worst election in the history of Nigeria. Tell the people the election was heavily rigged.  Indeed, you have never seen such a massively fraudulent election in your entire life. Tell Nigerians you are the people’s choice but not INEC’s choice.

Rent a small crowd and get them to riot. Let them burn a few tyres. Appoint an unemployed graduate to be their spokesman. When the television cameras arrive, he should tell the world you are the best president Nigeria has yet to have.  It does not matter if, at the end of the day, you only obtained 17 votes in the entire country. It does not matter if the only people who voted for you are the members of your immediate family. The fact is you ran for president of Nigeria. That will become a permanent part of your C.V.  From then on, you will always be referred to as an “ex-presidential candidate.”

As an “ex-presidential candidate” you become eligible to be the Minister of Agriculture. You also become an expert on everything. You will be invited regularly to “oraculate” on television about vital national issues.  Any time you want to say something, preface it by saying: “In my experience as a former presidential candidate of this great country…” Then you can sponsor some eggheads to write books in your name in which you talk about “My Vision for Nigeria.”

Become a motivational preacher

Start your own church. Give it a dynamic name like “God That Answers Yesterday,” or “God of the Millionaire and Billionaires.” Don’t take too long to be a pastor.  Within a year or two, promote yourself to Bishop or Archbishop. Don’t allow anybody to disrespect you by calling you “Mister.”  Tell them: “Call me Reverend.”  When you are introduced, you will be referred to as “Your Grace” or, better still, “Venerable.”

Every day, cram two or three big-sounding words from the dictionary. Find ways to use them as you preach. For example, words beginning with “octo” are highfalutin. You can say: “The whole thing is octogenarian.” Or you can say: “Everything is octodilapidatory.” Don’t worry if they cannot find your words in the dictionary. It only means you have become more learned than the dictionary.

People will listen to your messages and will not understand anything you have said.  Therefore, they will become convinced you are making a lot of sense. The discussion will be all about your English. Very soon, a university in your village will give you an honorary doctorate in the French language.

Your accent is also important. Don’t speak English like an Ibadan man. Speak with the kind of phonetics that even your mother will wonder where you were born. Remember this: the American accent is more difficult to understand than the English accent.  Therefore, it is more impressive. You don’t have to go to the United States in order to talk like an American. Just study a few Hollywood films and start talking like Frank Sinatra,

Keep your eye on the ball. Remember: the agenda is to be highly esteemed. So, don’t bother preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Preach instead the prosperity gospel.

Tell your church members that the poor will become rich, the unmarried will get married, the barren will have children, and the jobless will get jobs.  Write books with titles like: “Your Best Life Now.” Give people seven strategies and five keys to instant wealth. Tell them to get ready, there is going to be a divine transfer of wealth to them. Tell them to give Jesus a wiper.

Get a local rap artist to come up with suitable soundbites that you can use to dazzle the people. For example, you can tell them your God is “Jehovah Sharp Sharp:” “Inch by inch it’s a cinch.” “Turn your scars into stars.”  That is it: you become the flavour of the month. Very soon, you will be flying your own aeroplane in order to go and preach in Ilesha.

Be a success

It does not matter what you succeed at. Just make sure you are successful and Nigerians will like you. You can be an armed robber; as long as you are successful, you will be esteemed. You can be a drug pusher.  Just make sure you are successful at it. Nobody cares how you make your money. All they want to know is that you have the money. Go to that wedding and spray the bride in dollars and euros.  Go to your village and build a villa there. Also sink a bore-hole, so people can come to your house to fetch water. Everybody will love you and sing your praises.

Nothing succeeds in Nigeria like success. Failure is not an option. If you fail, your parents will disown you. Your mother-in-law will abuse you.  Your wife will divorce you.  Your fiancé will give you back your engagement ring. Your children will change their surname. Your friends will delete your cell phone number. Your pastor will not remember your name. So, you better not fail otherwise you will be dead, buried and forgotten.

Footnote: If you try any of these methods and Nigerians still don’t like you, then you are a lost cause. There is only one option left for you. Pack your load, buy a ticket and go to Ghana. You will not be missed.

PRESS RELEASE

The Presidential candidste of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The Presidential candidste of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu

In Osogbo, Tinubu restates commitment to job creation, credit for business owners …carpets Governor Adeleke for poor governance.

All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, took his message of Renewed Hope to Osun State on Thursday where he assured the people and party supporters of his commitment to create jobs for the unemployed and make credit available for business owners.

Speaking in Yoruba to a mammoth crowd of people who thronged the venue of the campaign rally at Freedom Park Osogbo, Tinubu said his administration would empower the people with the skill that will make them employable while ensuring that the youth will no longer spend years in university due to lecturers’ strike action, stating that his pledge to the people will remain a binding covenant.

“I make a social covenant with you today that the unemployed among you will get jobs. Those with no skill will be provided with the relevant skill that would put food on their table. When we get to government, we will make soft loans available for market women and business owners.”

Taking a swipe at the current Peoples Democratic Party government of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osun State for poor governance of the state, the APC presidential candidate charged the people that the APC administration will soon return to continue the good work.

“They were given a little opportunity to rule for some months and they started misbehaving, killing and creating unrest in Osun state.”

From his prepared speech which he didn’t get the time to read, Asiwaju Tinubu congratulated Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, who was declared the winner by the governorship election petition tribunal. He praised Oyetola’s tenacity, diligence, consistency and determination, which made him not give up until he got his stolen mandate back.

On his plans for Osun, Tinubu noted that the state, which is highly blessed with diverse resources, should be a destination for business and tourism across the country, promising to help achieve this if he becomes the president. He said, “Osun is a beautiful state filled with virtuous, industrious and welcoming people. We will support Osun to become a manufacturing, industrial, agricultural and tourism paradise.

“You have fertile soil, abundant mineral resources, and a rich culture and history capable of attracting tourists from across the world. “A vote for me is a vote to develop all parts of this state and this country. Rural areas will not be forgotten but will be developed to support more economic activities and create better lives for the people. “At the same time, our growing urban population – you city boys – will enjoy decent jobs and a living wage.”

Tinubu urged the people of the Osun State not to be deceived by the empty promises of Peoples Democratic Party Candidate Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party Candidate Peter Obi, saying both have nothing to offer. While he said Atiku was only interested in stealing the nation’s resources and pocketing them for himself and his cronies, Tinubu likened Obi to the unprofitable servant who buried his talents, saying while Obi was Anambra State governor, he failed to use the state’s resources to develop it, rather saving them for no purpose.

“None of the other major candidates in this election have the capacity, integrity, knowledge or determination necessary to do what must be done. Only I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is prepared and up to the task of leading this country, our cherished homeland, back towards its best destiny. “Do not vote for the candidate of the poverty development party, Mr Privatise, Atiku Abubakar. When, as the Vice President of this country, he had a chance to make a positive difference, he chose the lesser path.

“He chose to use his position to enrich himself, his family and his friends. He sold Nigeria’s most prized assets for a fraction of their value. In the name of privatisation, he stole from your future to enrich himself. “Worse, he has learned nothing. He has gone everywhere telling the Nigerian people that he is coming back to finish the job. He has promised that this time he will not steal your prosperity.

“You should not believe him or his greedy co-conspirators. The nation does not need the return of its Privatiser-in-Chief. Reject him and his band of foul jesters. They have no serious plans for this country. They resort to cheap and vile antics because they have no substance, no solutions. “Be equally wary of the false messiah, Mr Stingy, Peter Obi. This man’s promises are bold and his boasts are plentiful. Yet, when he was given the responsibility to lead just one state, he was overwhelmed by it.

“He could only stash away the money he was supposed to have used to develop the state. All the people of Anambra could hope for was that whoever came next would have better ideas.

“A governor is not a banker, expected to hold fast to his customer’s deposit. Obi was expected to build good roads, schools and hospitals. He was supposed to pay the salaries of Anambra doctors, teachers and civil servants. He was meant to nurture and empower new leaders.

“In eight years, he achieved none of these things. He is no visionary leader. He is the man who proudly buried his talents because he knew no better. This man who could not even understand the proper role of a governor cannot be trusted as the next president. Reject him,” he added. He also itemized further things his administration will do in the agricultural, educational and security sectors to give a befitting life to the people. “Our farmers will be better equipped to feed the nation. In return, they will receive decent incomes with which they can better tend to their families in addition to tending to their land.

“Our educational reforms will equip talented youth with skills needed to be globally competitive. Our policies will open access to loans and business expertise to those wanting to start their own businesses.

“The bedrock of our national security shall be strengthened. We will better equip military units with tactical communications gear and all-terrain vehicles to give them greater communications and mobility to track down criminals, bandits and terrorists. “We will upgrade our weapons systems and exploit aerial technological superiority to further identify, monitor and subdue the criminals, terrorists and bandits who would do harm to ordinary citizens,” he added.

At the rally were Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano); former governors Kayode Fayemi and Adegboyega Oyetola, as well as former APC Interim Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, APC National Women Leader, Betta Edu and other party leaders from National headquarters and South West party leaders.

Mr President, You owe Tinubu more than this…

Abdullahi O. Haruna Haruspice, the author of the book; 'The Buhari In Us'

At the venue of the All Progressives Congress party convention in Lagos in 2014, all was set by the duo of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to define your end politically. They came prepared to pull the rug off your feet but one man -only one man saved you. The man is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu! Sensing the clandestine onslaught against you, he rolled out his political canopy and got you enveloped, thereby shielding you from the dangerous arrows of defeat. You came victorious because this man used his massive clouts to see you emerge as the presidential flag bearer of the APC.

We should always know that life is a circle, a vicious circle with a dot. In 2014, you were the dot that got shielded with Asiwaju’s circle, and 2023 offers you the opportunity to reciprocate that gesture, by shielding Tinubu within your circle because he is the dot. The law of nature expects that you stand stoic in this spiral stage to support the man who sacrificed his friendship with Atiku Abubakar for you. It is halal to be reciprocal in gesture like he backed you then, it is your turn to carry him shoulder high. This is character, this is integrity and it must be upheld. Leaving Tinubu in the cold at this defining time of our nation’s history is tantamount to redefining loyalty. Posterity will stand in grotesque testimony of your person. Tinubu believes in you because the people trust you, you need to trust him because the people believe in him! True friendship is when we stand for each other in times of need, not in need of time!

A few weeks to Nigeria’s presidential election where your party has fielded a candidate to replace you, everything seems perilously loose with no definite commitment from you. You seem distant from the party’s stance and make passive and lukewarm statements that create ripples of uncertainties among the party faithful. Your interview with the media where you said Nigerians should vote for whoever they like sounds very statesman but deadly injurious to your party. You are not an umpire but the driver of your party mechanism. Detaching yourself from the struggle of the party at this crucial time stands for re-tuning the rhythm of self-centeredness. A man baked in the oven of integrity should not manifest this. You may not see it but know that your party is going into the general elections in trepidation. The expected confidence from an incumbent party in power is gradually losing its lustre.

Beyond you and  Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there is a moral contract between the north and south of Nigeria; this mutual political unwritten consensus has been there and faithfully respected by the two regions. Anything contrary to a reciprocal embrace will alter the aged long political alliance that has always existed. In 1976, following the gruesome murder of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, the northern military elites came together and ‘forced’ General Olusegun Obasanjo to succeed Murtala. Following traditions, Obasanjo handed over power to Alhaji Shehu Shagari as the first executive president of Nigeria. That show of trust and dependability was to manifest again in 1999 when the same north rallied around to make Olusegun Obasanjo the president of Nigeria with the return of democracy. It is this same tradition that Asiwaju reenacted by wholeheartedly supporting you, Buhari to be president in 2015. This circle of life continues and it should be respected for posterity’s sake.

Nature never forgets nor forgives those who stay aloof when the house that harbours them burns in ruin. Besides Asiwaju, you owe the party the duty of survival. The APC must not go down as the party that came blazing in prospect to a party that fizzles into oblivion. I see that happening if you detach yourself from what lies ahead. The signs are not clear; the broom may be swept away. And it will be more tragic to be referenced as the man under whose reign the APC died.

The ongoing reforms, especially the naira redesign -as good as it is carries truckloads of anguish, the people are groaning from its effects and all anger isn’t at you but at the APC which they are battling prepared to meet at the poll come February, 27! Policies are relaxed during elections. As insincere as it may be, it suits the reality of electoral permutations. The reality is that if the APC fails to return to power, the very cherished reforms you put forth at the expense of your party will be fiercely repelled by any party that wins. This is the time to be circumspective or like the harmattan fire, the APC ends with you, sir.

We understand you want to play safe as a democrat but your disposition reflects a tragic aloof style of kingship, by presenting the pattern of ideal kingship as independent from various orders of sequential articulation, including biological succession and history itself. If this continues, history won’t be kind to you. Leaders who deprecate political loyalties because they want to be seen as upright suffer the ignominy of history- they are not replicated.

PDP Chairman backs Obi for President

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Russia and President of the Nigerian Community Russia, Dr Maurice Okoli declares support for the Labour Party presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Russia and President of the Nigerian Community Russia, Dr Maurice Okoli declares support for the Labour Party presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Russia and President of Nigerian Community Russia, Dr Maurice Okoli has declared support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

In a statement on Sunday, Dr Okoli said, unlike the presidential candidates of the major political parties, Obi has no baggage.

Describing him as an impeccable character, Okoli a Senior Research Fellow Institute for African studies Academy of Sciences Russia and CEO of Markol Group Russia, urged Nigerians to vote for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, the Labour Party presidential candidate has awakened the consciousness of the Nigerian youth, stressing that they have trusted him with their future to get them the new Nigeria of their dreams.

He said the former governor of Anambra State is a man with an impeccable track record of excellent public service who will take Nigeria to the promised land.

“If the corrupt ruling class rigs him out of the presidency of Nigeria, what we are witnessing now will be a child play on what to come. Nigerians should think. For a revolution to take place there must be revolutionary situations. We are gradually getting to that situation. The ruling class must be conscientious.

“I am aware that we black people like to live in self-denial. We are mostly not honest with ourselves. And once you are dishonest to your self you can neither be honest to others nor to your God. Looking at the precarious and dangerous situation of things in Nigeria, will we be open to ourselves?. Nigerians should think.

“It is only an educated person without character that will not support Peter Obi. As a matter of fact, an illiterate with character is better than an educated person without character,” he said.

He lamented that the country is drifting close to the cliff, emphasizing that all hands must be on deck to ensure Obi’s victory at the polls.

Dr Okoli faulted the Muslim/Muslim ticket of APC, saying such is not needed in a religiously divided country like Nigeria.

He said: “If Nigerians allow him to rig himself to the presidency, what we are witnessing under the present. APC Presidency will be a child play to what is to come”.

On the choice of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as PDP Presidential candidate, Okoli said: “PDP chose a Presidential candidate who is a Fulani Northern Muslim for another eight years after a Fulani Northern Muslim will be finishing his eight years as the president of Nigeria. This is in a country being choked by the cry of peace, unity, equity, justice and fairness”.

SOUTHEAST VOTER STRENGTH

1
SOUTHEAST VOTER STRENGTH
SOUTHEAST VOTER STRENGTH

We have to preach now to Igbos residing outside the southeast to stay put anywhere they reside. All these rumours of war and attacks are geared towards putting fear in them so as to flee back to the southeast before the election and then return after the election. We have to speak boldness to South Easterners. Make them understand that he who fights and runs away will live to fight another day. We don’t have to die many times before our death. Death will come when it will. It is very critical. That’s the only way 25% in 36 states will be possible.

The latest release from INEC, put voter registration as at the time as follows:

South East – 10,574,956 ;

South South – 14,226,471;

South West – 17,419,669

Total South – 42,221,096

North Central – 14,388,386;

North East – 12,025,167;

North West – 21,215,186

Total North – 47,628,739

GRAND TOTAL – 89,849,835

In our last update, the Number of INEC Registered Voters of the Igbo People with PVCs are as follows:

S/E Igbo with PVCs Residents – 10,574,956;

S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in the 19 Northern States + Abuja – 12,800,226; (27%)

S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in South-South – 6,125,525 (43%)

S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in the South West – 6,505,555 (36%)

The total Igbo population nationwide with PVCs is 36,006,262.

I wish our people to know that there’s no cause for alarm. We’re our own problems. It’s for us to harness these and put them to effective use for our benefit and those of our children. We can’t allow these friends to put fear and doubt into us and posterity. As you are aware, the perception we are taught in marketing is reality. The above figures in relation to the Igbo could be more but not less.

NOTE:

One can see that the Igbo of the South-East with PVCS nationwide are the highest in voter strength and spread. Well coordinated, the Igbo nation including the Igbo of Rivers, Anioma, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Edo, Kogi, Benue, and the very few in Bayelsa can alone produce the President of Nigeria. It’s not a threat, they can also in collaboration with their grandchildren in different states of Nigeria whose mothers are Igbo daughters take over the electoral fortunes of most of the states of Nigeria. The obvious is achievable if we are united and committed to the cause.

Who can visit Russia WITHOUT a VISA in 2023?

0
Visa Free Countries to Russia in 2023
Visa Free Countries to Russia in 2023

Citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

Citizens of most of the post-Soviet states can visit Russia without a visa. Countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Although Ukraine is not a member of the CIS, it is included in this list, nonetheless. Notably, a Russian visa is required for citizens of Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, despite these states’ Soviet past.

The rules vary as to how long citizens of these countries can stay in Russia without filing additional paperwork with Russian migration authorities. For example, citizens of Belarus can stay in Russia for up to 90 days without registering with a police division which handles migrant-related affairs in Russia.

Citizens of Kazakhstan can stay in Russia for up to 90 days, but the law requires them to register with the police if they intend to stay in Russia longer than 30 days. For citizens of Tajikistan, this registration-free term is reduced to 15 days; for citizens of Moldova, this term is even shorter and amounts to 7 days. Citizens of the above-mentioned countries are allowed to prolong their stay in Russia for up to a year if they receive a work permit or come to study at a local university.

Up to 90 days

Citizens of several other countries are allowed to visit Russia without a visa and stay in the country for up to 90 days during every 180-day-long (6-month) period. Countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Israel, Nicaragua, Peru, Venezuela and South Africa fall into this category. However, their citizens are not allowed to work or engage in any commercial-related activities during their visa-free stay in the country. Foreign travellers from these countries are required to register with the police within seven days of their arrival in Russia.

Up to 60 and 30 days

Citizens of Cuba, Montenegro, Thailand and South Korea may also visit Russia visa-free. Cubans and Thailanders can stay in Russia for up to 90 days. Citizens of South Korea are allowed to stay in the country for up to 60 days, and citizens of Montenegro – for up to 30 days. Сitizens of Serbia has the right to visa-free entry into Russia only if they have a biometric passport issued after 2008. Residents of Macau are also allowed to enter Russia without a visa and stay for 30 days. Residents of Hong Kong may also travel to Russia visa-free, but can only stay a maximum of 14 days in the country. Chinese citizens, however, require a Russian visa. Citizens of these countries are all required to register with the police and are not allowed to use their visa-free period to work in Russia.

Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as North Macedonia, can also stay in Russia without a visa for up to 30 days, provided they acquire a tourist confirmation or a tourist voucher from a hotel in Russia or a tour operator registered with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Notably, foreign travellers arriving in St. Petersburg on cruise ships and ferries from Helsinki and Tallinn are exempt from visa requirements if their stay in the city is no longer than 72 hours and provided they are sleeping on the ship.

Banana Island, Nigeria’s Most Exclusive Estate Where The Richest Nigerians Alive Live

0
Banana Island, Nigeria's Most Exclusive Estate Where The Richest Nigerians Alive Live
Banana Island, Nigeria's Most Exclusive Estate Where The Richest Nigerians Alive Live

Who are you here to see?”

Even though I expected the question, it still feels off guard. I convinced the security guards at the main gate that I have been invited and after a call to the person I am supposed to see, they let me in with the magic word of the day, “Bravo”. I navigate my way towards the second gate and have some speed bumps. After confirming the magic word to another security guard, he waves me through. A few more speed bumps and I finally get what many Nigerians crave – peace, quiet and civility.

This is Banana Island, Nigeria’s most exclusive estate, where secret passcodes are exchanged like in a bad spy movie. It is here that Chidi Oke, a former resident of Victoria Island, moved to join Nigeria’s wealthiest and most prominent people on the man-made Banana shaped estate. The estate was the brainchild of the late Adebayo Adeleke, Davido’s grand dad and CEO of City Property Development Ltd, but was eventually constructed by the Lebanese-Nigerian Chagoury group in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. Banana Island sits on approximately 1,630,000 square metres of land, which spills into the Lagos Lagoon, and has become a Nigerian version of Beverly Hills and Burj Khalifa.

It is also a picture of Nigerian exceptionalism. You may not know Mr Oke, but you know his neighbours. Iyabo Obasanjo. Aliko Dangote. Kola Abiola. Linda Ikeji. Alhassan Dantata. Even Mike Adenuga, CEO of Globacom and one of the wealthiest men in Africa. For Chidi and his family, Banana Island offered something rare in Lagos. Order and stability. Victoria Island is also the home of the wealthy but offered little protection from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. “Victoria Island began to look less appealing as it became more commercial. At some point, there were too many clubs and businesses moving there. We wanted somewhere more quiet and partitioned,” Chidi says.

Banana Island is different. Here, commercial and residential zones are distinguished. On the right side of the estate is the strictly residential area; mostly comprised of private homes while the left side is the mixed area, in use by for-profit businesses including 9mobile and Olaniwun Ajayi, as well as service stations and a few private houses. The estate is also removed from the outside world; a gated community with only one major entrance. Resting at the Northeastern corner of Ikoyi, it is as if the estate and its residents don’t want to be found. And if they could, they would detach themselves from Lagos Island and settle somewhere in the serenity of the Lagos Lagoon.

A functioning system in Nigeria… Banana Island was built to function in a country that does not function. Residents enjoy luxuries such as near-constant electricity, water, and drainage. The constant electricity in the estate is a big deal; after all, Nigeria has the second worst power supply in the world, and the rest of the country is almost always in darkness. “At the very least there’s 20 hours’ worth of electricity in Banana Island,” says Chidi on the state of power in the Estate. That is thanks to an independent power plant, which directly supplies the estate with electricity. “We have street lights, family parks, halls, religious centres, convenience shops, pools, a minibus system and a golf course,” explains Chidi on the other perks that come with living in Banana Island. These amenities are not just available but are frequently maintained and upgraded. For example, according to Chidi, a bad road within the estate will likely be fixed in a week or two.

Banana Island is proof that things can work properly in Nigeria. All it takes is money, planning and a vision. It is a picture of what Lagos could be, if not in the future, but in another world. The estate is also a reminder of Nigeria’s broader failure. Or, at least, a reminder of the ridiculous cost of success here. The comfort of the estate comes at a price, one the average Nigerian would find shocking. Just think, property here is priced in dollars.

Ikenna Ume- Ezeoke is the Managing Director of Turquoise Construction Ltd. and has been working as a civil engineer in Banana Island for close to seven months. He puts the average price of renting an apartment in the estate at $22,000 to $150,000 a year – depending on what end of the estate the house is located. This is excluding a service charge of $17,000.“Housing is quite highly-priced in Banana Island, which is the way it was intended to be. A plot of land, for example, goes for nothing less than $1 million,” Ikenna asserts. The cost of housing is a result of many factors. One of them is the calibre of people living in the estate.

As mentioned before, Chidi Oke has some wealthy and famous neighbours, and to join this exclusive club, you need to be ready to pay. But the cost of Banana Island may also be because of how perfect it is compared to everywhere else. The deliberate zoning, the constant security and access to power, and well-maintained amenities. In Nigeria, these all cost money.“Banana Island has a lot of things that make it stand out from the average Nigerian estate. There’s a substantial amount of security, independent power, good road network. All of these things make the estate attractive and expensive,” says Ikenna on why property here is so expensive. “The closest place you can get to enjoying any of these things is Aso rock, the Presidential Villa,” he opines. Heaven to some, foreign land to many. The irony of Banana Island is its presence in a country where 62% of people live on less than $2 a day.

The estate is a luxury that most of the population cannot afford. Residents are aware of this; some embrace the exclusivity, while others consider it with unease. Chidi Oke says people perceive him to be lucky. “People are excited about it. You get this ‘oh wow, you live in Banana Island?’ reaction from the average Nigerian. They say I am rich and lucky to have access to a place like Banana,” he muses. And yet, for all its aspirations to perfection, Banana Island cannot escape its surroundings.

Ironically, when the estate is most quiet, you can still hear the hustle and bustle of Lagos as you near the exit. The residents of Banana Island may temporarily escape the dysfunction of Nigeria when they retreat to their homes, but they can never really leave it behind. It lurks outside always, like barbarians at the gate.

Peter Obi, CON, is a successful businessman, politician, public servant, and philanthropist, who is contesting to be the President of Nigeria in the 2023 election under the platform of the Labour Party.

Mr Obi served the people of Anambra State as their Executive Governor between 2006 and 2014. During his tenure, he demonstrated his core values of integrity, focus on human capital development, financial prudence, and an uncompromising commitment to public service, which has defined his globally recognised brand identity.

Early Life and Education

Born July 19, 1961, in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, Obi attended the renowned Christ the King College, Onitsha before proceeding to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy in 1984. He embarked on his one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps program.

Upon completion of his mandatory national service, Obi began his foray into business, building his way up while exemplifying the modest Christian values he had been raised. Bracing different challenges along the way, his business provided him with the privilege of meeting people of different tribes as he travelled the length and breadth of Nigeria, building strong relationships, many of which have gone on to last for decades.

Over the years, Obi established himself as an astute businessman, founding a retail business that has created thousands of jobs for young Nigerians, while investing in several other businesses across different sectors of the Nigerian economy, which are to date still helping to create valuable jobs for Nigerians. His experience and keen eye for spotting business opportunities led to him occupying various board seats in different organizations. They include the Board of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) where he was Chairman, Guardian Express Mortgage Bank and Fidelity Bank, where he was also Board Chairman, and Guardian Express Bank Plc, Chams Nigeria Plc, Emerging Capital Ltd and Card Center Plc, in which he held positions as Director.

Public Service

In 2002, convinced that things could be better for the people of his home state, Obi campaigned for and won the seat of Governor of Anambra State. However, it took 3 years of legal wrangling for him to be pronounced winner after his major opponent was illegally declared the winner and sworn in as Governor. He took office in March 2006 and began the process of implementing his Anambra States Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS), a localized version of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which was geared at reducing poverty, child mortality, hunger and a number of other prevailing social issues.

Obi’s innovative leadership had at its foundation the belief that every society can only prosper when its people are well and truly empowered to create wealth. To achieve this, he focused majorly on improving the education standards in the state, establishing critical health infrastructure, and implementing business-boosting policies while ensuring the security of lives and properties within the state.

Despite being wrongly challenged through impeachment twice, Obi’s visionary policies saw Anambra State move 16 places up in education rankings, to become the number one state in Nigeria. His administration invested heavily in clean water schemes, waste management, support for primary, secondary, and even tertiary healthcare centres, vocational skill acquisition, and much more.

By the time Obi was re-elected for a second term in 2010, he had already engrained full transparency in how the government’s business was run, maintaining a very prudent approach to the management of state resources in order to reduce fiscal waste and maximise delivery of important amenities to his people.

A key hallmark of Obi’s two terms in office was the effective collaboration between the public sector, private sector, development partners, and civil society organizations which ensured that most of the policies implemented were well monitored, evaluated and improved upon. Working closely with development partners such as UNDP, UNICEF, the World Bank, DFID and the European Union, Obi’s administration ensured global best practices were maintained in the quest to improve the quality of life within the state.

Under his leadership, Anambra State became the first state to establish a Sub-Sovereign Wealth Fund, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, which had about $ 156 million in dollar-denominated bonds by the end of his tenure as governor. His administration built from scratch, the first state-owned Teaching Hospital, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka, going further to obtain full accreditation for 12 other health institutions, none of which were accredited before he took office in 2006. His school administration policies have ensured that the standard of education in Anambra State has remained excellent to date.

As has been recurring in his life journey, where both peers and the public place great trust in his abilities to serve diligently, he was elected as the Vice-Chairman, of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (2008-2014) and Chairman of, the South-East Governors’ Forum (2006-2014); despite being the only governor in the region belonging to a different party.

Preparation for Further Service

Before being Governor and since leaving office, Obi has kept abreast of evolving trends in human capital development, community development and poverty alleviation. He has attended numerous executive programs at some of the best institutions in the world including the Lagos Business School, Harvard Business School, the London School of Economics, Columbia Business School, New York, Institute for Management Development, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Oxford University, INSEAD, and many more.

His focus has remained to understand the best ways – in policy and implementation – to create a Nigerian dream where every Nigerian is able to contribute meaningfully to the progress of the nation while living a productive life for themselves.

An Obidient Call To Serve His Nation

In the run-up to the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, Obi has become the voice of hope for a better Nigeria, presenting himself as a Presidential Candidate under the Labour Party. His candidacy has rekindled a belief in the possibility of Nigeria toeing a new path, away from entrenched corruption that has held it back for years, especially due to his standing as a significant candidate unaffiliated with either of Nigeria’s two older parties.

Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign has received widespread support, notably among young Nigerians, who have self-organized and championed his cause while referring to themselves as Obi-dients. His supporters believe that his integrity, efficient resource management, business acumen, respect for the rule of law, security antecedents in Anambra and overall focus on developing human capital are what Nigeria requires to regain its pride of place in the world.

Obi, who is married to Margaret Brownson Obi (Nee Usen), has two children and has garnered various national and international honours, including Commander of the Order of Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s national honours.

Continuous Contribution to Nation Building

Following the end of his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State, Obi was appointed the Honorary Special Adviser to the President on Finance, a position he held until May 2015, while also serving as a member of the Presidential Economic Management Team. Given his efficient management of state funds as governor, and his establishment of a healthy reserve for his successor, his contributions were thought to be invaluable to the nation, hence his additional national duties, which he fully executed until a new federal government was sworn-in.

Despite being out of government since 2015, Obi has become one of the most recognizable voices for a new Nigeria, one where character and competence are at the base of what it takes to lead the government and any of its agencies. Through various engagements and shared opinions, he has established the need for a more cost-sensitive and effective government where corruption is greatly reduced, and transparency of the process is commonplace.

In 2019, as Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, he raised and drove the conversation for Nigeria and Nigerians to switch to a production mindset and economy and ensure that the nation’s resources were properly managed to yield the best results.

EXIT OF THE GREATEST SOCCER PLAYER EVER( THE KING OF SOCCER) – EDSON ARANTES DO NASCIMENTO AKA PELE

Adieu to the King of Footbal / Soccer Pele as family members, friends, colleagues and fans gather to pay their last respect to him.

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years” – Abraham Lincoln

The death of Pele, some days ago didn’t come completely as a surprise, to those who followed the news of his health condition, in the last days of his life. Nature as it were, gave Pele and his family ample notice to make the necessary preparations for his passing. And they took maximal advantage of it. May his soul find rest in the Lord’s bosom! Amen!

One controversy that lingered right up to the passing of two of the best soccer players ever: Pele and Maradona, was, who was the greater/ greatest player?

Some soccer schools of thought think it was Pele; others, though in the minority, gave it to Maradona. From the title of this piece, one sees which side of the aisle yours sincerely belongs.

My thinking is informed by the general assessment of both players: their individual talents, their contributions and their achievements with the teams they played for, their contributions to soccer development generally and their persona.

With regards to talent, in my considered opinion, Pele was not more talented than Maradona. But when the other factors are taken into consideration, Pele gets the nod in my considered opinion.

Pele was highly talented, one of the most highly talented players ever to have kicked the round leather ball.

Pele was a highly disciplined soccer player. According to my Brazillian neighbour and friend, he was always the first to come to training and the last player to leave the training pitch. He achieved an immeasurable lot with his club, Santos FC of Brazil! He is actually to date, the only soccer player ever to have won the FIFA soccer world cup three times!!!! A record that considering the evolution of soccer nowadays, would be difficult to equal, talkless of surpassing!

Pele helped develop/ popularise soccer in North America, in the seventies, when he signed and played for the New York Cosmos.

Off the field, he was a gentleman per excellence. An affable/ lovable personality, who lived an exemplary life that gave and still gives credit to the game of soccer and it’s principal actors, the soccer players!

Soccer players were hitherto seen as charlatans, never-do-wells or drop-outs, who bestrode the pitch to give expression to their hitherto unanalyzed, recalcitrant/ anti-social /unwanted behavioural tendencies!

Pele’s persona helped rejig/reshape this hitherto unenviable/unwanted image of soccer players.

He was by far the best public relations product of the round leather game thus far. And maybe will ever be!

As a young boy of thirteen, one remembers his trip/playing tour with a Brazilian club side to Nigeria in 1978. They played two matches in Nigeria, in Lagos and in Kaduna.

In the Lagos match played in a full capacity National stadium Suru-Lere, they played against an “NFA selected side”, that comprised some of the then best Nigeria players. One notable member of that squad that one still remembers is Sunny Oyarekua- then police officer soccer star. He was conspicuous in the match, by hitting the crossbar of the Brazillian team with a volley, that would have been credited as a world goal if it had gone in!

In that match, Pele played forty-five minutes each with both sides.

In the second match played at the Ahmadu Bello stadium, Kaduna, Pele’s Brazillian team, played against a Kaduna-selected team. One remembers Felix Owolabi, then a member of the Super Eagles, playing for the home team. One remembers he had the ‘unenviable’ task of marking out Pele when Pele played against his team!

Like in the Lagos match, the stadium was filled to capacity, and Pele played one-half each for both sides.

Following Life’s dictates, Pele has gone the way of all mortals: he has died! But he left indelible footprints in the sands of time! He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest nay greatest soccer players ever!

Once again, may his soul find rest in the Lord’s bosom! Amen !!!!!!!

PRESS STATEMENT – RE-ATTACK ON PRESIDENT BUHARI IN KANO

0
President Buhari in Kano after Attack on his convoy in Kano
President Buhari in Kano after Attack on his convoy in Kano

We were not surprised to read of the imaginary attack on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria being peddled by the Peoples Democratic Party since the party has nothing tangible to tell Nigerians from its crumbling Presidential Campaign.

This invented attack on President Muhammadu Buhari must have happened only in the fertile imagination of PDP National Publicity Secretary, one Debo Ologunagba… Nigerians should disregard this fake news from a party that has lost touch with reality and suffering the agony of violating its own rules on power rotation.

Just as it has been masterminding fake news against the APC presidential candidate and trying vainly to cause disharmony in the APC family, we believe the party may have planned to embarrass President Buhari in Kano and then put the blame on host Governor Ganduje and Tinubu.

This is because PDP has recently morphed from being a Buhari virulent critic to strangely becoming a Buhari spokesperson! The last time it issued a self-serving misinterpretation of Asíwájú’s statement in Abeokuta as an attack on President Buhari. It should be quite obvious to Nigerians that the knowledge of the impending defeat of the PDP at the coming presidential poll has pushed the party and its candidate into the frenzied hallucinatory mode of a mindless, ridiculous, ludicrous litany of lies and fabrications against APC and its candidate.

The PDP is a drowning party feverishly clawing at any straw of lies and lashing out in all delusional directions to keep afloat – but sink it will. We believe Nigerians are not taken in by the jejune antics. The PDP now runs the most unethical, pernicious and inelegant, abusive, obtrusive and nationally divisive campaign in the history of electioneering in Nigeria.

The other day it was the PDP candidate Atiku who, out of frustration, stated publicly that the north must not vote for anybody outside the region. It’s the same trend that characterizes the PDP campaign ever since. That surely is a sign of defeat, and readiness to sacrifice the unity of this country on the altar of unbridled inordinate ambition. Nigerians are wiser and would never allow PDP centrifugal forces to take our nation down with it. All men and women of good conscience should rise up and use their votes to send PDP and its band of desperados to the dustbin of history where they rightfully belong.

Contrary to PDP fabrication, President Buhari was warmly received in Kano State today by the good people and government of the state where he commissioned eight hugely impactful projects including an overhead bridge with an underpass and a cancer centre.

On Sunday, we alerted the nation to the plot by PDP to orchestrate and execute many evil plans to defame, ridicule and delegitimise President Muhammadu Buhari and our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nigerians of goodwill would have seen by now that we didn’t raise the false alarm in our statement issued on 29 January 2023 where we detailed the evil machinations of PDP and their hirelings. Only the evil mind of the PDP could conceive an attack on a President of Nigeria.

It is not impossible that PDP through its paid agents would organise miscreants to stage-manage an attack. But we are sure the security agencies are capable of foiling any planned attack on the President and anyone who is caught in such an unholy plot now or in the future will have himself or herself to blame. We call on the security agencies especially the Police and Department of State Services to immediately arrest PDP National Publicity Secretary for interrogation over this imaginary attack.

WILL THE 2023 ELECTIONS AVERT THE LOOMING DANGER IN NIGERIA?

Preamble:

The forthcoming 2023 general elections in Nigeria present some serious worries to many people who care about the value of human lives and the looming dangers facing Nigeria as the country enters this year’s general elections.

Accept or reject it, the forthcoming 2023 elections in the coming weeks in Nigeria, instead of ushering in any positive results or change, is actually, going to exacerbate the current situation of insecurity, violence and political and economic instability in the country. This is not to sound alarming. It is not being pessimistic either or sounding like a prophet of doom. But if truth be told, every honest and dispassionate person knows that with the 2023 election, if it eventually takes place, Nigeria is heading to an uncharted voyage, the consequence of which is better imagined than real.

This is why those who really love the people of this country and want to save lives, and human lives, should, as a matter of urgency, please, hurry and come to the aid of the endangered indigenous ethnic populations and communities in the country at a time like this. Help the gatekeepers of the Nigerian State to come to their senses, to understand that we need to put our house in order, first, before embarking on anything called an election. That is, as a people and nation-state. Because, anybody, who tells him/herself the truth, knows within his or her conscience, that no election conducted in Nigeria today, under the present dispensation and circumstances, is going to bring any positive results. Unless a miracle happens. And, unless, however, the fundamental problem of true nationhood and co-existence bedevilling the continued corporate existence of the diverse ethnic and religious groups that make up the country, is first resolved through a referendum for self-determination. Anything short of this is inviting a more dangerous problem of insecurity and violence in the country. God forbid!

Therefore, as things are today in Nigeria, ‘the only referendum for self-determination of the component Ethnic-Nationalities in the country is the most viable option. That is, of those major indigenous ethnic nationalities or geopolitical zones that want to opt out of the Nigerian State as presently constituted and structured, to form their own independent sovereign state. Only this can avert the looming danger.

This is why one would like to invite and request the International Community, the UN, the US, the EU, and especially, Great Britain, African Union and ECOWAS, to please, come to the aid of Nigerians, the inhabitants of that geographical space called Nigeria. Kindly, begin to interrogate their so-called political leaders and gatekeepers of that country. One would like the International Community, to please, begin to rethink also about Nigeria, and how to help the country and its inhabitants get out of its continuous cycle of violence and bloodbaths. It is high time the International Community begins to have a different approach to its diplomatic relationship with Nigeria – its approach to Nigeria’s problem of dangerous diversity. So as to help the gatekeepers of the country to come to their senses and put a stop to all these senseless killings and cycles of violence going on in the country.

It is high time the International Community begins to acknowledge and recognize that Nigeria, as it is presently, constituted and structured has never worked and will never work. Therefore, the International Community has the onerous task to try to come to the aid of the suffering and traumatized Nigerian people before the worst begins to happen. Let the International Community summon the courage and tell the gatekeepers of the Nigerian State, that enough is enough. That the country needs to be fine-tuned, or rather re-negotiated so as to save the lives of its endangered diverse indigenous populations and communities, who are in constant threat of extinction by the Northern Muslim extremists that control the central government of the country, the terrorist-infiltrated Nigerian security operatives, Islamist insurgents and herdsmen terrorism, and what have you.

International Community needs to come to the aid of the crying and traumatized indigenous populations and communities of the Nigerian masses – Christians and Muslims alike, that have become a kind of endangered species in the Nigerian State. That is, at the hands of their own leaders, the present corrupt and heartless politicians, the ruling class and most of the elites in the country!

What Nigeria and its inhabitants need now, if truth be told, is not another election, or the International Community’s so-called ‘Election Observers Monitoring Team.’ No. The country has been having those international monitoring teams all this while, at every national or state election conducted in the past. But where has that led us? What positive change has that brought towards improving the election process or democratic culture in the country? The answer is no. It is a waste of time, because, there have never been any credible, fair and free elections conducted in Nigeria since its political independence in 1960 to the present day. And there will never be until we do the needful. That is, re-negotiate the Nigerian State through a referendum for the self-determination of the component indigenous ethnic nationalities or major geopolitical regions of the country that want to opt-out to form their own independent sovereign state. Only this can put a stop to the Islamist terrorism and insurgency, as well as the culture of bloodbaths and political instability that has been bedevilling the country since its flag independence in 1960 to the present day.

Therefore, the International Community and Organizations instead of issuing the usual statement of warning or alarm, that no country can contain the number of refugees that may come from Nigeria should the country slide into violence and wars following the 2023 elections. The UN, US, EU, especially Great Britain, African Union and ECOWAS, should begin doing something now. That is, towards helping Nigeria and its diverse peoples to put an end to the chronic crisis of political instability, insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, religious intolerance and ethnic cleansing in the country, by organizing a referendum for self-determination along the country’s major ethnic nationalities or current six geopolitical zones’ fault lines. Only this type of bold step by the International Community can avert the looming danger. Because of the high rate of corruption in Nigeria, most politicians in the country, who are actually benefiting from the corrupt system and rot in the land, are not prepared to do the needful, to correct the imbalance and rotten system in the country. For them, this election is business as usual. It is another opportunity to revalidate their looting system and continued enslavement and subjugation of ordinary citizens, as well as the permanence of violence and insecurity in the land.

Violence and terrorism as well as general insecurity and political instability, are a system’s problem. They are like the ‘industry’ of power through which the ruling political class, especially, the Northern ruling Oligarchy use to hold onto power in ‘perpetuity’ in the country. This is why for most Nigerian politicians every election is a do-or-die affair. None of them has the interest of the common man at heart. This is because the Nigerian political arrangement and structure favour such fraudulent and frivolous situations and things than resolving them. Nigerian political system and governance style breeds criminals and looters of the public treasury. It equally breeds Islamists, terrorists and bandits! This is the culture of looting, corruption, lopsided government, violence and intimidation that each election conducted in Nigeria strives to revalidate. This is why no election or change of personnel can bring any positive results in Nigeria today as presently structured.

In other words, no political election conducted in Nigeria today, or change of personnel in political leadership through election or whatsoever, is going to bring any positive results, today or tomorrow in Nigeria. The problem with Nigeria is beyond the ‘almighty’ 2023 planned ‘fraudulent and shambolic’ elections. Any elections conducted in Nigeria under the present dispensation will not only heighten the present state of insecurity but also embolden and increase the ‘volume’ of the current senseless killings, herdsmen terrorism and Islamist insurgency in the country. The ongoing killing of Christians and Indigenous populations by the Islamists and the state-sponsored violence and military and police brutality will continue unabated throughout the country until the International Community and the gatekeepers of the Nigerian State do the needful.

Mind you! Our concern is about saving lives! It is about saving the lives of the endangered indigenous populations of different ethnic nationalities, Christians and Muslims alike, logged together through colonial fiat by the British, which the British named Nigeria. We are worried and will continue to be worried, because, we want our people in what we call Nigeria today, to be able to be alive and live a dignified life in safety and freedom. That is, to begin to live in peace and tranquillity, and not in pieces, or in the present, continued mutual hostilities, senseless killings, hatred and resentment of one another. Enough of the bloodshed and ethnic cleansing going on in Nigeria!

Again. This is our concern in this write-up. We are considering some of the ways to put a stop to the ongoing senseless killings of innocent civilians, indigenous ethnic populations, Christians and Muslims alike, in Nigeria. Nigeria’s dangerous diversity is the problem. That is despite the much-discussed problem of leadership. There must be, first of all, an enabling environment for any political leadership that is people-oriented, and serious about building true nationhood and state, to emerge and thrive. Without such natural ‘ingredients’ for nationhood building, no leadership, no matter how good-intentioned its political leaders may be, will ever succeed. In the Nigerian State as presently structured and governed, such natural ingredients and enabling environment for nationhood building are lacking.

Dangerous diversities – differences in ethnicity, religious beliefs, value systems, philosophy of life, worldviews, and cultural and linguistic fault lines, will continue to frustrate any effort made towards building one, united, prosperous Nigeria. This is the crux of the matter. It is unfortunate. But at the same time, the human reality. Added to it, is the country’s long years of mutual hostilities, ethnic cleansings, pogroms, senseless killings, Islamist and herdsmen terrorism, etc. Such that there is no way any political election or change of personnel in the country today, will ever bring any positive results or change anything in the ongoing bloodbaths and carnage that have become like Nigeria’s second nature. There is no enabling environment for a credible, fair and free election to hold Nigeria as we speak either.

Conclusion

Nigeria needs to disintegrate, so to say, for the people to be able to be alive, and to live their lives according to their own norms and chosen political system and structure. So that we all can begin to relate well as neighbours, and with one another as normal human beings created in the image and likeness of God. Nigeria needs to disintegrate, so to say, according to its geopolitical zones and major ethnic nationalities fault-lines, to make each entity that would emerge, a manageable geographical space, and not an abattoir or theatre of bloodbaths as the country is presently experiencing. And has been experiencing since its creation by the British in 1914, especially, since its flag political independence from Britain in 1960. Nigeria is an artificial country that was not created by the British to survive or to serve the interests of its citizens – the indigenous ethnic nationalities and communities of that geographical space, named Nigeria by the British. Nigeria needs to disintegrate into manageable regional sovereign independent states, respecting its diverse ethnic nationalities or major geopolitical regional fault lines – its diverse and different ethnic nationalities, or the existing geopolitical zones. That is, if we really want to save lives and build a better future for the inhabitants of that geographical space the British named Nigeria in 1914, after their infamous amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Protectorates of Nigeria.

The dangerous diversity of Nigeria is at the root of the problem with the country. Until that is discussed and settled, once and for all, through a referendum for self-determination, there will be no end in view of the ongoing senseless killings, religious intolerance, bigotry, ethnic-irredentism, ethnic cleansing, pogroms, herdsmen terrorism, Islamists insurgency, and especially, the present state-sponsored insecurity, violence, military and police brutality and recklessness in the land. A Stitch in Time Saves Nine!

A CRY OF PENITENCE AND REPENTANCE BEFORE THE LORD FOR NIGERIA By Ike P. Ibekwe, PhD

A CRY OF PENITENCE AND REPENTANCE BEFORE THE LORD FOR NIGERIA
A CRY OF PENITENCE AND REPENTANCE BEFORE THE LORD FOR NIGERIA

Says the Lord:

Jeremiah 5: Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem [Nigeria], and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgement, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. And though they say, the Lord liveth; surely they swear falsely… [t]herefore I said, surely these are poor; they are foolish…[w]herefore, a lion out of the forest shall slay them…because their transgressions are many… How shall I pardon for this? Thy children have forsaken me…when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery…[t]hey were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. Shall I not visit for these things? Saith the Lord…Go ye upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end.

Jer. 6, (13): For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest, everyone dealeth falsely. (14) They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace…behold, I will bring evil upon this people…because they have not hearkened unto my words… [t]o what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me…

Gen. 18:26-32: Peradventure ten shall be found there (in Sodom), I(the Lord and His Destroying angel) will not destroy it (Sodom) for ten’s sake

Isaiah 66: …but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word…

Psalm 24: 3-4: Who shall ascend into the Hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in His holy Place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

2 Chron. 7:14 – If my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves, pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

1 Cor. 13:13 – David said; even the man whose heart was after the Lord; the apple of God’s eyes. He said: Let me fall into the hands of the Lord; for very great are His mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man

Oh Lord, the God; that rules in the affairs of men; that reigns above the waves and the clouds; excellent glory; the high lofty One that inhabits eternity, and in whom eternity subsists. The ancient of days and mystery of ages; the transcendent and the immanent. Oh Lord that is full of Light, long-suffering and a multitude of mercies. Lift up yourself and draw near unto us as we cry unto thee this day. Lord, disengage thy mighty and victorious right arm from thy bosom, and stretch it out to us, that we may live and not die the death of the uncircumcised. Arise Oh Lord, our Boast, spit fire and smoke from thy mouth and nostrils; for we perish in this place.

But hear our confessions O’ Lord, and show us mercy according to thy loving kindness, and our sincerity and humility in this matter. Like Daniel before us, we confess our iniquities and wickedness that triggered your righteous anger and wrath: Our corruption and hypocrisies so great that they stank up to your throne in heaven; your eyes saw it, your ears heard it, and your nostrils smelt it. But lord, climb down from thy wrath and terrible judgement. Let mercy overtake judgement, for we perish. Here are the sins we confess before thee in tears:

We grabbed and grabbed in bribery and corruption until we robbed the beggar of the alms in his begging bowl; forgive us O’ Lord for this and all sins mentioned below. For the sake of your son and Lamb, Jesus – Amen.

We (our teachers) deflower the innocent young maidens left in their cares. Some are bold enough to demand both flesh and cash in exchange for marks.

We have also an unofficial policy of flesh or cash, or both, for a host of other things: for admission into schools; employment, job interviews, etc. We have so corrupted and polluted the Land, that there is no innocence anywhere, and truth lay comatose in the streets. We confess this too, and ask your forgiveness, Lord.

We have gladly accepted that our Law enforcement officials must always be ‘rogered’ to be effective. So much that they have graduated from when they were too embarrassed to accept money from erring commercial vehicle drivers before their onlooking passengers; to the point, as at this day, when they shoot to death, drivers (private or cab), that refuse to ‘roger’ or ‘cooperate’. Forgive us this sin also, Lord.

Our armed robbers do not raid banks or well stocked Supermarkets; no, they raid homes, and whether or they find money/valuables; they must fill up the cup of our iniquity by raping a man’s wife or daughter while forcing him to watch the scene> In some documented cases, they have asked sons to see their mother’s nakedness. A thing which is an abomination in your sight, and even before children of the world.

Our kidnappers forcibly snatch a suckling from its mother’s breast or bosom – most times inflicting injuries on the resisting mother – in order to sell the child to human traffickers, for sale to barren women; and most wickedly, sometimes to ritual killers (who are agents of our politicians and ‘big’ men, who need more money or involved in a must-win election.

We are so proud of our culture of reward and bribery that we have stated and fixed sums for all advertised positions for employment in the public and private sectors.

We have found a new way to avoid abortions, and also assuage your anger; we established baby factories; where unfortunate pregnant teens who want to dispose of their babies could come to for free (usually dangerous) deliveries, where untrained quacks are the gynaecologists, nurses and midwives. The baby buyers are on standby to take the babies as soon as they arrive; after settling the astute business owner of the factory, leaving the hapless teenager destitute than she was before the pregnancy. Indeed, the factories have hired young men to get the teenagers pregnant, after a promise of a substantial sum of money in exchange for their cooperation. Monies they never get after all is said and done. Forgive us this sin also, Lord.

Our male medical personnel also have the fringe benefit’ in their profession: of being able to touch their female patients in all parts of their bodies; some fornicate with them on their hospital beds and examination beds. O’ Lord, forgive us this sin also.

In our Judiciary, our Justice is openly displayed for sale to the highest bidder, and the most desperate; oppressing the poor in this manner, which is also the case in Police stations, is normal. Forgive us this sin also.

Our sins are too numerous to count in numbers. Such is the multitude of our sins that we need not add the envies, fits of anger, implacable and fierce personalities; our hypocrisies; ranging from that between spouses in families, to those existing amongst our extended families, etc.

But we repent O’ Lord, of all these in this day; and we beseech you to give us another chance in this space, called Nigeria. We beseech you, Lord, to hear our voice and our cry. Some of us are almost ready to kill and serve up our children as their next meal. Have mercy on us O’ Lord. Stay thy hand, O’Lord. It is enough Lord. Will you contend with us? What are we to thee, Lord, but mere dust and ashes? Mere clay that turns worthless when once to take back your spirit. Pity us, O’ Lord; we come trembling; in dust and ashes. Peradventure, you will remember to grant us the same ‘sure mercies’ you granted to David. Be merciful unto us; remember thy children; the poor and the oppressed and afflicted.

Arise O’ Lord and give us a Leader that fears you in Nigeria, come February 2023. Arise, O’ Lord and let thy enemies flee before you as chaff driven by the wind; let them melt before you as wax melts before the fire. Let them be confounded, who knowing these anomalies, have feigned ignorance, and are hypocritically campaigning to install the godless the proud and arrogant, for a mess of Esau’s porridge- to ensure our children starve to death, while they send theirs to schools in Europe and America.

Soludo Is Working For Those Who Want To Keep Igbo People As Second-Class Citizens In Nigeria.

The Chairman of the World Igbo Congress (WIC), Prof. Anthony Ejiofor has said that the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo is supporting the people working to ensure that the Igbo people continue to play second fiddle in Nigeria’s political contestations.

The helmsman of the apex Igbo body in the diaspora made the remarks during a live virtual interactive session moderated by the host of the popular satirical news show, Dr Damages Show, Rudolf Okonkwo.

Prof. Ejiofor, who described the statement allegedly made by Atiku Abubakar that he would be the stepping stone to an Igbo presidency, as an “insult to our people”, accused Prof. Soludo of being lukewarm about the common Igbo interest.

“I have great respect for his (Prof. Soludo’s) academic and intellectual accomplishments but when it comes to common Igbo interest, there is a great divergence there,” Prof. Ejiofor said.

Elaborating on his characterisation of the Anambra State Governor, the WIC chairman said Prof. Soludo “feels Igbos should just wait for a turn that is yet to come”, to become president of Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, the amiable governor is toeing that line of supporting people who are bent on keeping us as second-class citizens in Nigeria. But I think we have come to a point where we can sit at the table and somebody from our place will be the president of Nigeria,” he asserted.

Also alluding to the recent letter written by the Anambra State Governor in which he insinuated that Peter Obi will not win the 2023 presidential election, Prof. Ejiofor admonished Soludo not to allow himself to be frozen in the past but to look forward to what is coming.

Prof. Anthony Ejiofor, Chairman, World Igbo Congress.

LATEST PRESS RELEASE FROM THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION – FURTHER EXTENSION OF TIMEFRAME FOR PVC COLLECTION NATIONWIDE!

Festus Okoye Esq National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee
Festus Okoye Esq National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee

The Commission met today, Saturday, 29th January 2023 a day after its meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and deliberated on a number of issues, including the reports from RECs on the ongoing collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) in its 774 Local Government Offices nationwide.

It will be recalled that at the meeting with RECs on Friday, 28th January 2023, the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu indicated that the Commission will not hesitate to consider additional measures to ensure that all citizens have ample opportunity to collect their PVCs ahead of the General Election.

Having reviewed reports from all the States of the Federation, the Commission is encouraged by the progress made so far as more Nigerians troop out daily to collect their PVCs.

Arising from reports from the various States and discussions with Resident Electoral Commissioners, the Commission has decided to further extend PVC collection in all its Local Government Offices nationwide by an additional one week. The ongoing collection of PVCs nationwide will therefore continue and end on 5th February 2023. This is the second time the Commission is extending PVC collection nationwide and this will be the last extension of the exercise. The collection period has further been extended by an additional two hours and will start at 9am and end at 5pm daily including Saturdays and Sundays.

Those that engaged in double and multiple registrations should not bother visiting any of the Commission’s Offices as the Commission did not print their PVCs. The Commission will continue to act on all reported cases of sharp practices during the ongoing PVC collection and will ensure that no Nigerian is disadvantaged and all those that carried out valid registration have an opportunity of collecting their PVCs.

The Commission once again salutes the patience and doggedness of citizens.

Russia and Belarus signed an agreement on mutual recognition of each other’s visas.

The foreign ministers of Russia and Belarus, Sergey Lavrov and Vladimir Makei, signed on Friday an agreement between Russia and Belarus on mutual recognition of each other’s visas, TASS reported from the scene.

Earlier in the day, the presidents of Russia and Belarus, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, talked on the phone voicing “satisfaction that the work on the Russian-Belarusian intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of each other’s visas has ended.”

On December 12, 2018, Russia’s then-Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a government resolution ‘On signing an agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Belarus on mutual recognition of each other’s visas and other issues related to the entry of foreign nationals and stateless citizens on the territory of the states – signatories to the Treaty on the Creation of a Union State.’

Under the agreement, citizens of third countries with a valid visa of either Russia or Belarus will be allowed to enter, leave and stay in the other country until their visa expires, to cross the land border of Russia and Belarus by rail or air and via major highways. Each party reserves the right to deny entry to those persons or to shorten their stay on its territory.

Moscow and Minsk had planned to sign an intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of each other’s visas at a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Union States of Russia and Belarus in Brest on December 13, 2018. However, the signing was postponed as Minsk had not finalized some internal procedures. That was amended later and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that all proposals had been taken into account in the final draft. Bilateral discussions were underway until now.

But recently, the Government of the Russian Federation has approved the mutual recognition of visas for foreigners entering the territory of Russia and Belarus.

The head of the Russian government, Mikhail Mishustin signed an agreement between the government of the Russian Federation and the government of Belarus on mutual recognition of visas and on issues related to the entry of foreign citizens and stateless persons into the territory of states.

The agreement will be submitted to Parliament for consideration. A special information exchange system will be created between Russia and Belarus on issued and cancelled entry and stay permits and border crossings at checkpoints.

Earlier, the presidents of Russia and Belarus Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko achieved agreement on all 28 programs within the framework of the Union States.

Atiku, Tinubu Should Please Grow-Up

1
Two political foes, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (L) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar (R) of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) exchanging pleasantries while national chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu (M), looks on.

Street wisdom dictates that those in glass houses don’t walk naked. This seems lost on Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate and the flagbearer of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have allowed their media managers to trade damaging allegations that question their own character and integrity.

Each side has succeeded in painting the candidate of the other party as a criminal who is unworthy of the position being sought. While some Nigerians may be enjoying the entertainment, the tragedy of our situation is that either of these two septuagenarians could end up as our next president in a matter of weeks.

I once likened accusation and counteraccusation of impropriety by Nigerian politicians during campaign periods to the African folklore of three famished brothers eating from the same plate of food. Apparently losing out in the game of greed, the first brother remarked to no one in particular: ‘You are eating too fast’. To this, the second brother responded: ‘So you saw him’. The third brother completed the farce: ‘That was exactly what I wanted to say’!

The current circus started with the allegation by Michael Achimugu, a former aide to Atiku. In a video post that is making the rounds on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, Achimugu spoke about the sum of N100 million allegedly paid into a ‘Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV)’ for misappropriating public funds at a time he (Atiku) was vice president. Achimugu revealed other damaging things about Atiku, buttressing his claims with the audio of an incriminating conversation purportedly held with his former boss.

Hardly had the allegation hit the internet when the spokesman for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, went on a media offensive. He also filed a writ of summons at the Federal High Court in Abuja asking that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) be compelled to investigate, invite and/or arrest Atiku over the allegation. What followed was predictable. The Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the EFCC to arrest and prosecute Tinubu over lingering drug peddling and money laundering allegations. Referencing Tinubu’s 1993 alleged money laundering and drug-related case in the United States, Atiku’s media team, including Dele Momodu and Daniel Bwala, said should the APC candidate win, “Nigerians will be plunged into a drug crisis that would make the Colombia situation a child’s play.” They also threw up sundry allegations of corruption and cronyism.

The APC and PDP have shared power at the centre and in the majority of the 36 states since the advent of the current democratic dispensation 24 years ago. That ordinarily should impose a measure of responsibility. So, if all that their presidential candidates have to offer in this election season are insults, abuses, and damaging allegations, then Nigerians should be concerned. What their campaigns are invariably telling the electorate is that a choice of either would be a democratic endorsement of the crimes and vices they are accusing each other of.

In their journal article on ‘Negative Campaign’, Richard R. Lau and Ivy Brown Rovner of the Department of Political Science, Rutgers University, New Jersey, United States argued that one of the most important decisions candidates make is “whether to run on their own merits—that is, their own policy ideas, past accomplishments, and personal strengths, which most observers would call a ‘positive’ appeal; or if instead their campaign will concentrate on the perceived weaknesses of their opponent’s policy proposals, prior policy failures, and/or personal peccadilloes”, which they described as a ‘negative’ appeal. Minders of the two parties prefer the latter.

Let me be clear here. As a journalist, I am aware that mudslinging could sometimes take the moral dimension of exposing the weakness of the other candidate in a sort of ‘buyers beware’ warning for voters. But most reasonable Nigerians are also aware that neither of these two candidates can genuinely throw stones. That is not even my concern. Whichever direction we look at today, Nigeria is at a most challenging period in history. And with mounting debts amid low revenues, prospects for the future don’t look good either. So, we need those who aspire for leadership, especially at the highest level, to tell us how they intend to address the myriad of challenges that we currently grapple with and the ones that are bound to come.

The point we cannot ignore in this sordid drama is that when politicians lack the depth of insight on pressing national issues, they revert to low-level gutter snipes. With the language of political exchange drenched in mud, vitriol, and dirt, even the institutions of a democratic society like the judiciary, police, security agencies etc are not safe. Besides, in the case of the two presidential candidates, many would have concluded that their exchanges are very revealing of who they are.

That two friends and associates of more than three decades can descend to this level of desperation is, to put it mildly unfortunate. The real danger is how that could be transmitted to their followers when the election doesn’t go their way and the prospect of post-election violence. Yet, when aides get carried away by the excitement of the moment, that is when the adults in the room must show up to call them to order and draw the line. Therefore, it is in the enlightened self-interest of both Tinubu and Atiku to have some quiet words with their campaign managers. They must embrace a more sensible rule of engagement.

SOLUDO SAYS HUMAN CAPITAL REMAINS AN ASSET AND DEPENDABLE RESOURCE FOR SOUTH EAST ECONOMIC GROWTH

SOLUDO SAYS HUMAN CAPITAL REMAINS AN ASSET AND DEPENDABLE RESOURCE FOR SOUTH EAST ECONOMIC GROWTH
SOLUDO SAYS HUMAN CAPITAL REMAINS AN ASSET AND DEPENDABLE RESOURCE FOR SOUTH EAST ECONOMIC GROWTH

Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR has said that human capital which is the greatest capital of the South East region should be increasingly explored to project the region to greater economic growth. Governor Soludo stated this during the 2023 South East Human Capital Development Conference held at the International Convention Center, Awka. The theme of the Conference is “Changing the Narrative Towards Entrenching Human Capital Development in South East Nigeria”. Governor Soludo explained that Human Capital is the only dependable resource for yesterday, today, and tomorrow for South East.

Speaking as the host Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo said: “This conference is fundamental to who we are. We will not get anywhere unless we fully utilize human capital.

“How does the South East, with its uniqueness and vast resources dispersed throughout the world, ratchet up the homeland and build the ones for tomorrow? What do we need to do differently? “There’s a lot more work to be done for the South East in addition to the ones that have already been done,” Soludo said. “The concept of communities is very strong in the SouthEast. Many primary and secondary schools were built by communities rather than the government. Communities have paved numerous roads. “Most of the recommendations from this conference are government-centric, in essence, what Government must do but more than 99% of the region’s resources happen to be in private hands. “You must carefully consider and leverage your delivery mechanism!” “Our delivery mechanism in Anambra is a Public, Private Community Partnership. What can the community do to help? What is the government’s role? What can the Local Government do? “We must mainstream studies, comparative studies and locations, best practices; who do we want to imbibe? Who are our counterparts or benchmarks? “We are living in the digital age and the fourth industrial revolution. How can we get from where we are now to where we need to be? How do we make use of technology? “What will the structure be for networking, collaboration, and cooperation? Can we form a regional team to review the curriculum? This is something we’re attempting in Anambra “Governor Soludo stated.

“The Nigerian educational system strives for common standards rather than minimum standards. Who says we can’t have a South East exam board even if it’s not part of the national curriculum? “There is room for us to think as a region. Let’s work together to make these things happen. “In our teacher recruitment, we made a statement. It should not be about who you know when it comes to teaching. We hired solely on the basis of merit. The names of teachers were published in national dailies for transparency purposes, and regardless of the state of origin, this is the message that must be conveyed to the country. “This message must be mainstreamed; hiring people should not be based on their state of origin. As a Federation, we must hire Nigerians as long as they meet the basic job requirements. I’ve seen some promising people who aren’t from Anambra on the list of permanent secretaries. I will appoint them if they pass the final stage of the interview.

“These points I’m raising are not in your recommendations, but they must be addressed. We must have the desire to carry them out because where there is a will, there must be a way”, Governor Soludo maintained.

The Governor also emphasized the importance of labour force participation in a federal structure like Nigeria. He went on to say that while his government is currently training over 5000 youths, it is like a drop in the bucket. “There can be no labour force if the economy is dying” “The most important way for our country to encourage local labour force participation is to support our innovators and producers. How will jobs be created if you do not patronize them? How will we encourage our farmers to produce more? All textile companies in the Southeast have closed their doors. The only one that works is the one that makes the “Akwete” cloth I wear. And I wear Akwete as a fashion statement. “We should eat what we produce and wear what we produce, creating millions of jobs in the process. This isn’t rocket science!”, the Governor stressed.

“If over 200 million Nigerians patronize our textile industries, we will create tens of millions of jobs in two years, but if we continue to import, we will continue to kill our economy”.

While analyzing the conference theme and some data presented, the Governor concluded that the South East region is performing poorly, and human capital appears to be the region’s only asset. He went on to reiterate that the South East has the smallest land mass and the fewest natural resources. “In Anambra’s case, the state is the world’s gully erosion. We have the second smallest land mass after Lagos, and our land is extremely hostile.

“Our vast productive resources, investment, and financial assets are located outside of the region. “We are unique in a number of ways that we must capitalize on, in order to ask what we will do differently to produce different results,” Soludo concluded.

Earlier while welcoming participants, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim Onyekachukwu, stated that Anambra State is the South East’s human development capital, which is why the state was chosen to host the conference.

According to him, Governor Soludo has a clear vision of what he wants to do for the people of Anambra, explaining that he also chaired the Anambra Vision 2070 committee, which was combined with the transition committee’s reports and his manifesto. The Deputy Governor revealed that Governor Soludo employed 5000 teachers in the state, which is part of human capital development. This feat, he claims, was also repeated in the health sector. He mentioned that based on the conference’s findings and recommendations, a working document for South East Governors will be created to help move the region forward.

In attendance was Secretary to the state government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, representative of Enugu State Governor, Dr Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo who is the Managing Director/CEO, Enugu State Investment Development Authority, representative of the Imo State Governor, Hon. Prince Ford Ozumba, the Commissioner for Labour, Employment & Productivity, and Others include; Anambra State Head of Service, Barr. Theodora Igwegbe, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, former Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha,

President, Anambra State Association of Town Union, Barrister Titus Akpudo, and members of Anambra State Executive Council among others.

WHY IDEATO STANDS WITH IKENGA!

0
Ikenga Ugochinyere of CUPP
Ikenga Ugochinyere of CUPP

One of the reasons that our political representatives have not really fared well in bringing dividends of democracy to the constituents is that most of them are cowardly or ignorant of their powers and rights as legislators, while many of them are just selfish and only support legislative motions and businesses that favour their personal interests, hence, looking the other way while projects and issues that affect their constituencies are either overlooked or diverted to personal pockets.

Over the last 24 years, Ideato Federal Constituency has had very wonderful individuals as her representatives, but none has been as bold and courageous as Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has proven that he will be, even before his election to the Green Chambers. Ugochinyere has proven beyond any doubt that the voice of Ideato will not be drowned by any force on earth and he has left no one in doubt that he is going to the National Assembly to make a difference and not merely to stand for himself or to make money for himself. It is obvious that if money is his motivation for seeking to represent Ideato Federal Constituency, then he certainly has made enough money for himself, given his age, that he could quietly walk away or even negotiate some personal deals with any level of government or political bloc in the country. But, apparently, he is driven by a more selfless vision than any personal or financial ambition.

A few months past the age of forty, the son of a school teacher and thoroughbred public servant, Chief Onyinye Ikeagwuonu, Ugochinyere set forth early in life to pursue his dreams in leadership and a life of service to the people, at enormous risks to his own life and freedom. Obviously, his patterns wouldn’t have gone down well with many people at various times, but like Henrik Ibsen did observe; “The strongest man in the world is he who stands alone” and “A forest bird never wants a cage”. Ikenga moved on even when it was obvious that the steam he swam in is riddled with sharks and many demons. He was nevertheless, unrelenting.

For more than seventeen years, Ikenga has stood up to be counted. Creative, courageous and strong-willed, he has challenged the most devious authorities and played roles in every political project, since, at least, 2007. His stance at various times might have been at variance with certain political divides and some vocal, therefore mistaken as popular, public opinions. But what cannot be taken away from the young political strategist and consultant is that, even with bruises, he mostly comes out smiling. A history of his political activism is not the subject of this Intervention, maybe, at the appropriate time, we shall bring that to the fore.

When Governor Uzodimma’s hawks and thugs took the ill-advised path of attacking Ikenga, I told some of them clearly that they were fighting a lost battle. Even though I had a different candidate I was rooting for at that time, I told anyone who cared to listen that Ikenga came into this contest prepared, and it would take more than some unusual political magic for him to lose this election. Then, there was a very slim opening that a certain candidate could puncture his chances, but the madness of the Imo State government happened.

Governor Uzodimma might have launched attacks on Ikenga, hoping that he could break his spirit, but what he has inadvertently done is to strengthen the young man’s resolve to fight this out to the end. He has lost an uncle, some staunch supporters and multiple millions of Naira in assets, but he owes it to posterity that he does not pull out or slow down on his campaign because it is no doubt that the aim of all the attacks on him is to scare him away to enable them to install a willing stooge who would represent their interests rather than the interest of Ideato people.

Ndi Ideato has shown an unmistakable readiness to resist these invaders and occupiers whose sole aim is for Ideato to continue on the path of underdevelopment and insecurity, while opportunities meant for the development and prosperity of the people are commercialised by a group of usurpers to their own aggrandizement.

Ikenga has certainly come to change the narrative in Ideato and like every revolutionary idea, the young man is contending with the forces of darkness and their agents. I am joining the majority of Ideato people and indeed everyone who truly wishes Ideato’s voice to be heard resoundingly in the 10th Session of the National Assembly to align with Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, and we will stand behind him to fight for our freedom from the hawks.

MAY IDEATO WIN!

Professor Banji Akintoye Writes APC Flag Bearer Ahmed Tinubu

1
PROFESSOR (SENATOR) ADEBANJI AKINTOYE
PROFESSOR (SENATOR) ADEBANJI AKINTOYE

My dear brother Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,

I write this letter to you in love, on my own behalf as well as on behalf of millions of other patriotic Yoruba persons who feel as strongly as I do about you… I write it for two important reasons. First, as you surely know, I acknowledge in love that you have been for decades now the foremost political leader of our Yoruba nation in the politics of Nigeria. Secondly, I write because of my very deep worries about the fact that almost all our Yoruba political leaders, including you our foremost leader, appear to be operating with an inadequate understanding of the Fulanis’ present posture, and therefore in insufficient concern for the serious challenges that face our Yoruba nation now in Nigeria.

The challenges facing our Yoruba nation do not arise from the regular and open politics of Nigeria. Far apart from Nigerian politics, the challenges facing us Yoruba arise from the decision of the Fulani nation, a nation that has never had a homeland anywhere in their history, to, at last, create for their Fulani nation a homeland, to make the whole of Nigeria that homeland, and to forcibly ‘conquer’, ‘break’ and ‘subjugate’ all the indigenous peoples and homelands all over Nigeria for that purpose. Indeed, in the words of some Fulani groups, if an indigenous nation resists too stubbornly, then the Fulani hordes must ‘exterminate’ such a nation completely. In pursuance of these decisions, the Fulani have been busy since the year 2015 in various acts of killing, kidnapping for ransom, destroying and raping the indigenous peoples of Nigeria, including us Yoruba.

Because the Fulani are few in number (about 7 million) in Nigeria, they are inviting all Fulani people from all parts of West Africa to relocate to Nigeria in order to reinforce the Nigerian Fulani in the acts of killing, destroying and conquering. By giving various favours to Boko Haram, they have won Boko Haram to support the Fulani program of conquests. They have enticed Nigeria with the most powerful international terrorist organizations – ISIS from Iraq and Syria and Al Qaida from Libya – and these are now working for the Fulani conquests.

And they have brokered an alliance between Boko Haram and ISIS, as a result of which the ISIS and Boko Haram allies now have the ambition of using the resources of the Fulani-conquered homeland of Nigeria to conquer all of West Africa and thereby create an Islamic State of West Africa. In all these plans and objectives of the Fulani, they particularly put a high premium on taking possession of the Yoruba homeland first and foremost, because they see the Yoruba homeland as the richest backbone of Nigeria’s non-oil economy – the home of the greatest ports, of most industrial outputs, of most urban centres, of the megalopolis of Lagos, of the richest farmlands, of the richest woodlands, of the longest and most promising coastline, of mineral oil and many solid minerals, of the most educated and most economically promising population.

Of course, the Fulani have no intention of using all this economic power of the Yoruba homeland for the benefit of Yorubaland and Yoruba people. Rather, their intention is that Yoruba people be subdued and used as a slave population producing wealth for Fulani-conquered Nigeria and the Islamic State of West Africa. And we need to add the following surprising detail – namely, that when the planned final onslaught on Yorubaland and Yoruba people by the Fulani and the terrorists is launched, its first attacks will be focused on the Yoruba Muslim population.

There are two reasons given for this. First, it is feared that, at the height of the onslaught by the Fulani and the terrorists, the Yoruba Muslim leaders would become a serious distraction or even an obstacle – because they would claim that, being Muslim leaders among their Yoruba people, they have a right to have a voice in the evolving affairs of a Yorubalnd which the Fulani are taking control of. Secondly, the Fulani Muslims and their terrorist allies do not regard and have never regarded, Yoruba Muslims as true Muslims – for which reason they never worship in the same Mosques with Yoruba Muslims, and sometimes even regard Yoruba Muslims as worse than non-Muslims.

Though the Fulani operated very secretly for decades while putting their agenda together, they are now no longer hiding their agenda, their ultimate objectives and most of their achievements. The Fulani strongly believe in using threats as a weapon for weakening their targets and, therefore, various segments of the Fulani leadership are issuing threats today about what the Fulani are coming to do to break, conquer and subjugate all the indigenous peoples of Nigeria in order to turn all of Nigeria into one Fulani homeland. I repeat, my brother, that this whole agenda of the Fulani is not part of and is not at all related to, the politics of the country of Nigeria. No. It is an exclusive Fulani program. The Fulani have been putting it together in many secret meetings over recent decades.

The Nigerian Fulani initiated and promoted these secret meetings of Fulani leaders from all over West Africa. In short, most of the same Fulani politicians with whom you as a patriotic Nigerian have been loyally engaging in Nigerian politics have been secretly masterminding this Fulani agenda for decades. It would shock you to hear that while you were labouring hard and mobilizing resources and men in 2013-15 to help Gen. Buhari to win the Nigerian presidential election, he had in fact been designated since 2011 at a West African Fulani leaders’ secret meeting (held in Burkina Faso) as the world leader of the Fulani Nationality Movement and therefore the chief commander of the Fulani agenda whose objective was (and is) to ‘break’, ‘conquer’ and ‘subjugate ‘ all of Nigeria including your own Yoruba nation.

The reason for the Fulani agenda is that the Fulani have an existential problem that we indigenous peoples or nations of Nigeria and West Africa do not have. Each of our indigenous nations (such as the Yoruba, Igbo, Edo, Tiv, Igala, Kanuri, Gbagyi, Hausa, Ebira, etc) has a homeland – an ancestral homeland where our ancestors began to live permanently many thousands of years ago and where we their descendants live today.

In contrast, the Fulani have no homeland anywhere. They originated as a people in western Asia in some ancient times and, throughout their history, they have never been held permanently to any land anywhere. They have always been migratory (that is, moving from place to place as a people), and wherever they migrate, they live by rearing cattle around (that is, each of their lives as a nomadic cattle herder). Migrating through Northwest Africa (the Maghrib), they came to the western parts of West Africa (the area of the Futa Jalon Hills) during the 16th century, and from there they migrated eastwards across the West African grasslands until many of them reached the homeland of the Hausa nation in the late 18th century.

All along their migratory route through West Africa, almost all the Fulani continued to live their life as nomadic cattle herders in the grasslands. However, a few Fulani got absorbed into the towns of the indigenous peoples, and the descendants of these are the Fulani town dwellers of today, notably including the modern Fulani political elite. After the European empire builders split West Africa into the many countries of today, many of the countries have Fulani citizens; but, since the Fulani have no homeland in any country and are therefore not indigenous to any country, they tend to experience political disabilities in some countries.

However, because of two historical developments, the Fulani have been very fortunate in Nigeria. First, in the early 19th century, an Islamic Jihad movement started by a Fulani Muslim cleric (Othman dan Fodio) resulted in making the Fulani minority the dominant political group among the vast Hausa majority. Secondly, after the British came at the end of the century and created Nigeria, they did not only reinforce the dominance of the Fulani in Hausaland, they went further to choose the Fulani as the ‘‘friendly people” among the peoples of Nigeria and then manipulated everything to make the Fulani dominant in the post-independence Federal Government of Nigeria.

Unfortunately, the Fulani, lacking an understanding of the nature of a modern country, decided from the beginning that their real function was to use the federal power to keep the other nations subdued and submissive to Fulani rule. Their topmost political leader, Sir Ahmadu Bello, said this on October 12, 1960, eleven days after the celebration of independence, “This new country called Nigeria shall be an extension of the estate of our great grandfather Othman dan Fodio. We must use the peoples of the Middle Belt as willing tools and treat the peoples of the South as conquered territory, and never let them rule over us, and never let them control their own future”. In 2014, another prominent Fulani man, Aliyu Gwarzo, wrote in a published article, “In 1960, Allah through the British gave us Nigeria to rule and to do with as we, please. We have been doing that since then and we intend to continue. (To hold on to it) “We shall kill, maim and destroy and turn Nigeria into the bloodiest war zone in Africa”.

My brother Bola, what this Aliyu Gwarzo and many other members of the Fulani elite have been saying loudly since 2014 is that a totally new Fulani agenda, totally different from the well-known politics of Nigeria, is now the order of the day for the Fulani. It is important that we must remember too that another prominent Northern politician, Balarabe Musa, the non-Fulani Governor of Kaduna State in 1979-81, alerted Nigeria in 2014 that a new order of politics was about to enter Nigeria. He called it a “new insurrection”, and informed us that it was being organized by some prominent Nigerian leaders, that its objective was a political goal that had never before been part of Nigeria’s political life, that it would be more powerful, better funded, better armed, and more murderous than Boko Haram, and that it would affect all parts of Nigeria. What Balarabe Musa was describing is the Fulani agenda which was soon to start in Nigeria in 2015

Since 2015, the Fulani agenda has been advancing vigorously from two wings. The first wing consists of the lower level of Fulani folks from all over West Africa – including well-armed groups of Fulani herdsmen, various groups of Fulani militias, masses of militarized Fulani poor folks who are being poured into the towns and cities of the indigenous nations of Nigeria for various kinds of peace-wrecking activities, plus their various foreign and local terrorist allies.

The second wing consists of Fulani men and women holding important positions in the Federal Government of Nigeria. The main duty of these high public officials for the Fulani agenda is to seize control of the Nigerian Federal Government for the Fulani people, by filling all important positions (in the executive, judicial, legislative, administrative, and financial arms) with only Fulani; by thereby turning the Nigerian federal establishment into a Fulani establishment, and, especially, establishing full and firm Fulani control on Nigeria’s security agencies – military (army, air-force, navy), police, and secret service.

During the first seven years of the Buhari presidency, all this Fulani take-over of the Nigerian Federal establishment was accomplished. In the principal income maker for Nigeria too, the NNPC, all management positions (except the technical ones) are now occupied by Fulani people. In all situations, the Fulani in government positions supports and assists the Fulani in the marauding activities on the farmlands and in the cities.

President Buhari himself publicly announced in 2017 that people from all over Africa were free to come to enter Nigeria without any travel documents, thereby opening Nigeria’s gates to Fulani folks in their millions, and when these come, they are instantly given Nigerian citizenship identity. President Buhari has also promoted the principle that a non-indigene who comes and lives for five years in an indigenous village or town automatically becomes an indigene of the place, with all the rights of an indigene. Furthermore, all over Nigeria today, the fear is that when the Fulani launch their final assault on Nigeria’s indigenous peoples, the Nigerian Military Forces will come out and help the Fulani.

Finally, the mind-boggling amounts of money being discovered to have been stolen by high Fulani officials from the Nigerian treasury (such as the 190 billion Naira reportedly stolen by an Accountant General, a roomful of cash reportedly found in the possession of a retired high public official, and many others) are mostly going into a Fulani war chest for funding the Fulani war of conquest and seizure of the homelands of Nigeria’s indigenous peoples – so that, among other things, Fulani villages, towns and emirates may soon begin to spring up all over Nigeria… We are also informed by some financial experts that the recent sudden change of the facial design of the Nigerian currency is to ensure that only the Fulani will have money to prosecute their war of conquest so that non-Fulani rich persons will be flat-footed.

And we have now learnt, at last, that there is a secret team of highly placed Yoruba officials in Abuja (including at least a Yoruba Federal Minister) who are being funded by the Fulani to promote the Yoruba Self-determination Struggle some persons charged with the duty of disrupting and destroying the Yoruba Self-determination Struggle. So, by the grace of God, we now know where certain strange and divisive voices and actions in the Yoruba Self-determination Struggle have been coming from. (Just by the side, we have also learnt that this Yoruba Federal Minister is seriously set against Bola Tinubu and is bent on doing everything to dent Tinubu’s image and damage the Tinubu campaign).

My dear brother, there is no room at all for our misunderstanding of the Fulani people’s intentions for our Yoruba nation. The challenge for us Yoruba is crystal clear. We either submit and let the Fulani and their terrorist allies roll over us and enslave us in our own land, or we stand up bravely to defend our land and people, push away the Fulani and their terrorist allies and, if it comes to that, push out the federal forces too – and take possession of our homeland as our new sovereign country of ORILEEDE YORUBA, in which we shall provide full security for our people and establish the highly developed economy that all our people desire. My brother, your foremost duty now is to prevent your Yoruba nation from falling into the disaster that the Fulani people have planned for us.

For this reason, most of us your brothers and sisters are deeply worried that you have chosen to pursue the politics of Nigeria at this terrible time rather than protect and defend your Yoruba nation. I have the support of millions of your Yoruba people as I write this letter to you to urge you to rethink your response to the manifest realities of today. The Fulani people, in the formulation and pursuit of their plans to forcibly transform Nigeria into one Fulani homeland, have nothing to do with the open politics of Nigeria – except to use Nigerian politics and Nigerian institutions to advance their Fulani ethnic programs. They have no loyalty to any non-Fulani Nigerian on the basis of Nigerian politics.

We are therefore seriously concerned that you as our highest political leader, the man who should be standing bravely in front of all of us Yoruba and firmly defending our Yoruba nation are, instead, expending titanic energy and resources in a quest to become the president of Nigeria. We admit that it makes sense for you to expect that, having helped another citizen to make it to the presidency in 2015, you have a right to get them to help you to the presidency too now. But are you even sure that, having taken Nigeria over almost totally for their Fulani nation, the Fulani will now take the risk of going all the way through to an election? Does it make sense to expect that having gone as far as they have now gone, the Fulani can seriously want to hand the presidency of Nigeria to any non-Fulani person? Indeed, all things considered, we your people must let you know that we have serious reasons to fear for your personal safety in the current circumstances.

Furthermore, you ought to know our dear brother and leader, that even if the unthinkable happens and you become president of Nigeria now, that cannot change the Fulani agenda or eliminate the achievements that the Fulani have already accomplished. They have been very successful in selling their agenda to all Fulani people in all parts of West Africa. For five years now, millions of these Fulani have been pouring into Nigeria and instantly becoming Nigerian citizens. All over Nigeria, ordinary poor Fulani men are able to possess AK47 riffles and command a strong knowledge of the new and disruptive Fulani doctrine that all of Nigeria has been given by Allah to the Fulani nation alone. In the far north of Nigeria, in President Buhari’s home region, it is common knowledge that Muhammadu Buhari is the founder and patron of Miyettti Allah, the foremost Fulani herdsmen’s terrorist group and that under the Buhari administration, Miyetti Allah has been a de facto arm of the Nigerian Federal Government.

In short, our brother and leader Bola Tinubu, we hereby urge you most passionately to rethink your relationship with the current realities of Nigeria. As a son and patriot of your Yoruba nation, you need to know that when you go around inviting our people, our obas, our chiefs, our professionals and our intellectuals to come and help you to win the Nigerian presidential election, you are seriously diverting the attention of your Yoruba nation from the dangers that threaten our Yoruba nation right now. We humbly urge you to accept that your real task now is to join with your Yoruba people to defend your homeland and, as a definitive and final act of Yoruba self-defence, and join your people to separate your Yoruba homeland from Fulani-controlled Nigeria.

Your people are already fighting both of these battles and your duty is to join them on the battle lines. The belief being promoted that if you become Nigeria’s president things will change for the better for the Yoruba people in Nigeria is a dangerous falsehood and you need to give it up. The true battle in Nigeria from now on is to mobilize people to defend and protect their homelands from the Fulani. Please, do not forget that in 1999 we had a somewhat similar situation to the current situation. Because it was conceded to us Yoruba to produce a president for Nigeria in that year, we became so elated that we ignored all other considerations. Today, we know better.

Even President Obasanjo who was a Nigerian president as a Yoruba man for eight years (1999-2007) is now raising the alarm that war has become inevitable and imminent in Nigeria and that the cause of the war is Fulani determination to seize the homelands of the indigenous nations from them. If we make the 1999 mistake today, we may be leading our nation on the path of ultimate destruction. Our brother and leader, please consider these matters very seriously and carefully. Many of us Yoruba love you so much that we will not leave you to continue to pursue a path that can end up making your name the most hated name in all the history of the Yoruba people.

The odium surrounding the Aare Afonja’s name and Chief Ladoke Akintola’s name would be child’s play compared to the intensity of the odium that could build up around your name if the Yoruba nation should enter now without you into a prolonged war in our homeland, or should (God forbid) fall into ultimate national collapse. We do not wish you such a fate, and therefore we urge you to change direction now. Please know that, whatever happens, I your brother and millions of other Yoruba patriots will sacrifice everything and liberate our Yoruba nation. We will soon proclaim our Yoruba nation-state, ORILEEDE YORUBA. There is no going back.

Hoping for your response, yours in serious and sincere brotherly love,
